Eyes or no?
Just outa curiosity here, which do you like better and why? The TMNT with their eyes showing (I think they all had brown eyes) or just the plain white Batman-esque type?
|
I like both ways. It depends. For the original cartoon the way their eyes were suited the style fine. Same goes for the new cartoon. I think it all depends on the drawing style.
|
Original style, white eyes while wearing masks.

They just look badass when it's just the white showing.

No pupiles

The interesting thing about taking away the turtles' eyeballs is that they lose some facial expressions.
Think about it - Without eyeballs, they can't roll their eyes, look over to the side without turning their heads, or become cross-eyed when smelling something nasty. Regardless, I agree that the turtles do indeed look better without any pupils. |
In the Mirage comics and new cartoon, the no-pupils style works very well. Gives that dark/mysterious style.
With the old cartoon/Archie comics, the eyes give a little more of friendly look. But for my own art, I draw the eyes. Eyes are a very important part, if not *the* most important part of facial expressions. I find it easier to express these emotions and thoughts with the pupils there. I wish that I had the skill of the show's animators, who are able to do wonderful expressions without the pupils. That means they have to over exaggerate a little, but the effect it worth it, I think. |
no eyes, i dont know why, theyy just look cooler that way.
|
No eyes, it adds mystery to them.

When I started watching the new toon, the white eyes really bothered me, but now I actually like it. Did anyone notice in the episode "The King", when Raph had his mask off, his eyes were the color in his profile, brown. I wonder what makes their eyes white? :-?

The turtles actually just constantly have their eyes rolled into the backs of their heads, while wearing the masks.
...and if you believe that, i've got some nice desert real estate in Florida to sell you. |

I like them as they are, with masks no eyes. without mask you see eyes.

It's gotta be eyes for me all the way! But I think it's cool that when they take off the mask, you can see their eyes (and I'm also glad they used real eyes in the movies :twink: )
|
yeah i say eyes too the more realistic ones

White eyes with no pupils are so much cooler. Makes the turtles look so much more bad ass!
The pupils work well for like the turtle toddlers though since they are suppose to be cute. |
There is no 'mesh' in the mask.
If you look at the episode 'Reflections' of the New Toon, you can clearly see that they are just regular holes. |
I prefer pupils. I think that no pupils is good for say, a bad guy. Not good guys. No pupils looks to me like there's no soul, and they sort of lose expression. With pupils you can make them shrink or get bigger for emotional effect, and dart around the room.... the way they are now makes it look like they're always facing forwards.
Of course it's just my personal preference. No pupils is ok, but if I were the one creating the characters, I'd save the non-pupils for the really evil bad guys. :kgrin: I loved the old shredder for his expressive eyes, too. I also prefer the way the old toon was drawn in general. |
