Oh well, guess it'll be in my retirement years before I can hope for a TMNT film I'll be able to consider good. Enjoy 'em for those that liked it.

With Guardians and dang near every other successful movie this year seeing a big drop off, I wonder how much of a drop TMNT will have next weekend. I still think they're going to see weak international results, though. Releases spread out all the way to December is a breeding ground for torrenting.

Or more specifically, will Guardians and TMNT both be toppled by Expendables 3 next weekend?
It's possible. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe Expendables 3 is going to be Wesley Snipes first movie since he got out of jail. And if it's rated R, it might shockingly do well too. Past couple of years, R-rated flicks have been doing gangbusters against the kids movies. Plus, the kids will be going back to school too, so more drops in the daily BO.

Expendables 3 was given PG-13 rating. Dunno if that was planned or just how it fell. Sometimes you can think you're aiming for an R and get PG-13. Sometimes you think you're PG-13 and get an R and have to edit....like Whedon had to on The Avengers.

This. Over and over again. I've been saying this.
It's so obvious, and yet, they just don't care.

This weekend is a surprise to everyone, and although the trend has been a steep drop off, I'm starting to think Brad Fuller was right all along.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. What 30 year old isn't going to see that, at the very least for nostalgic feelings, or just a laugh? Sure they'll be the turtles you remember, they eat pizza and all of that, but it's going to sell tickets on name recognition alone."

This movie might have legs, as expectations are just that low.

Expendables 3 is PG-13, not R. Plus there was the big story about how a DVD Quality/Screener copy that got leaked online and apparently a TON of people were able to see it/torrent it/etc. before Lions Gate tried to put an injunction on it.

My guess is this was the big weekend for TMNT. This weekend's opening haul included a lot of old fans going to see it despite their trepidation and parents dutifully trudging to the theater with their Nick TMNT fan kids. Those two groups have mostly all seen it now (thus the $50-60 million weekend) and you're probably not going to get many repeated viewings out of either. I could see the same teen crowd who eats up Michael Bay movies going in again and maybe a trickle of curious latecomers, but word of mouth on this movie is pretty terrible and I don't see it doing very well in the following weeks. My guess is it falls to #3-5 or even lower next weekend and it's out of theaters within a month, month and a half tops. I'm not trying to sound biased here, that's from having paid attention to the movie industry for 20+ years and knowing how Hollywood works.

Thirded. I hope this one doesn't get sequels and instead we get a reboot a few years down the line written and directed by someone who has read the comics. Can you imagine how great a Batman Begins-style reboot trilogy that opened with something like a Baxter Stockman vs. Rat King story could be?

Would be great, obviously!

Then again, Paint drying would be more entertaining than TMPD.

What? PG-13? Have they not learned their lessons from Total Recall, Robocop, Die Hard 4 that one does not just simply turn a once R-rated action flicks aimed at men and turn it into a PG-13 piece of fluff.

they obviously made it PG-13, cause they want that film to appeal to a Mass Audience, But its certainly gonna alienate the fans of the previous films, that wanted a hard R rating like the last one.

I was thinking to myself that one thing that makes this impressive is the fact that a child's ticket is a lot cheaper then an adults ticket. the show I went to had more children then adults. So had the show been filled with adults only the movie would have made even more $$$ (I am only assuming that most showings world wide were mostly children)

All right! Paramount really knew what they were doing with the marketing and appealing it to audiences.

Quote:
“‘Guardians’ is a great movie and it’s always tough to come right behind a great movie,” said Megan Colligan, president of domestic marketing and distribution for Paramount. “Ultimately we played more like a family film and they played a notch older…The great thing about summer is the marketplace is able to expand to allow for these two films.”

Males made up 61% of “Ninja Turtle’s” opening audience, which was 45% under the age of 25. That was roughly the same as “Guardian’s” debut weekend, which was 55% 26 and older, and 56% male. “Ninja Turtles” success was fueled by two core groups. It appealed to both younger crowds and twenty-somethings who remembered the original 1990s television show, films and toylines with fondness.

“A lot of it was nostalgia,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for Rentrak. “There is a generational affection for these characters.”

“Ninja Turtles” was a big $125 million gamble for Paramount Pictures, which is trying to demonstrate to its corporate leaders at Viacom that it can pull off big-screen synergy. In the case of “Ninja Turtles,” that meant capitalizing on the highly-rated cartoon reboot that was overseen by Nickelodeon, another Viacom property.

“This is a really important property for all of Viacom,” said Colligan. “The show is a big hit, and in terms of the toys and merchandise, kids have a huge appetite for it and really, really love this brand.”

Good point! Even though I'm not a fan of the designs, I'm glad it's doing well.

New comments from Megan Colligan, head of domestic marketing and distribution at Paramount Pictures, about the film's success.

Quote:
The return of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" earned $65 million in ticket sales at U.S. and Canadian movie theaters over the weekend, easily winning a box office battle with Marvel's outer space hit "Guardians of the Galaxy."

"Ninja Turtles," a reboot of a franchise born in 1980s comic books and popularized in TV cartoons, rang up another $28.7 million in international markets for a global debut of $93.7 million, according to distributor Paramount Pictures which wasted no time in announcing a sequel, set to open June 3, 2016.

"This exceeded all our expectations," said Megan Colligan, head of domestic marketing and distribution at Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc as is Nickelodeon Movies, which together released the film.

"Families came out in a very big way" while teenagers were drawn to the film's incredible action sequences," said Colligan, explaining how the film's box office performance was driven far beyond the expected fan base of 25 to 35-year olds.

Other comments about the success of this film along with Guardians of the Galaxy from Variety.

Quote:
The domestic box office ended July a shell of itself, brought low by a scrawny series of would-be blockbusters.

What a difference a month makes. “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” have sparked a rally at the multiplexes the past two weeks, crushing records and becoming the first- and fourth-highest openings in August history.

“August has become a star of a month at the box office,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Rentrak. “It used to be thought of as the dog days of summer and as sort of a dumping ground.”

The domestic box office ended July down more than 20% from summer 2013 and suffering from eight straight weeks of declines. Thanks to “Guardians'” $94.3 million opening and “Ninja Turtles'” $65 million debut, it now is 16% behind.

The past weekend was a marked improvement on the same period a year ago. Total ticket sales stood at $186 million, according to BoxOffice.com, a 16.8% jump from the same weekend in 2013 when “We’re the Millers” and “Elysium” premiered. Year to date, the box office is down 5.5%, a lot brighter than the nearly 7% it was off a mere two weeks ago.

“There’s two new franchises in the first two weeks of August,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “No other month this summer produced two huge new franchises.”

Going into the summer, both “Ninja Turtles,” a reboot of a popular series of films from the 1990s, and “Guardians,” which featured a lesser-known band of Marvel comicbook characters, were seen as question marks. They had brand awareness, but they weren’t considered to be as potent as “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past” or any of the tentpoles films that crowded into theaters in May and June. Their success could inspire studios to more actively scout out August as a time to launch some of their bigger films.

“What we’re seeing is the audiences are still there for these major franchises,” said Bock. “It doesn’t have to just be the leftovers.”

After chalking up $65M+ this weekend domestically, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opened to No. 1 in 17 out of its 19 markets this weekend — including in big market bows of Mexico and Russia — to take in $28.7M on 2,771 half shells. In Mexico, it grossed $6.9M from 653 locales, which bested last weekend’s opening of Guardians of the Galaxy which took in $6.5M. In Russian, it opened to $11.1M or 13% ahead of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and nearly doubling the No. 2 pic in the marketplace — Guardians of the Galaxy in its second weekend out of the gate.

The weekend box office total has been updated to $65,575,105.

http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/

I hope Paramount is 100% telling the truth about this one. Sources did not believe that Transformers: Age of Extinction grossed over $100 million in its first weekend.

Here's a telling piece of info from Boxofficemojo.com, the Sunday numbers, alone:
1. Ninja Turtles $17,810,885
2. Guardians of the Galaxy $12,865,127
That's only a little less than $5 million difference...and Guardians was in it's 2nd weekend.

Looking at the daily box office totals, the TMNT numbers take drastic day to day drops:
Friday 8/8 - $25,602,161
Saturday 8/9 - $22,162,059 -13.4%
Sunday 8/10 - $17,810,885 -19.6%

Judging on Guardian's returns we can expect a substantial drop off during the work week, and a slight rebound next weekend, but only about 1/2 of the amount of the opening weekend. Meaning about $10 million give or take.

It may have taken #1, but it's already pretty weak against just Guardians.

Guardians broke records on Monday-Thursday after its opening weekend. Yet despite that, they saw more than a 50% drop to this weekend.

50-60% (or more) drop off after opening weekend has been standard this year, it seems, with very few remaining dominant.

TMNT will probably drop to around 40m next weekend, but that's all they need to get into the black on budget. After that, it's all profitable.

It's normal for a movie during opening weekend to decrease in numbers.
