Absolutely. Bare minimum, four takes; one for each Turtle.

exactly..that pretty much only covers the 3 different angles...close up jones, wide shot jones and x, close up x

3 takes is not a good sign, no matter the movie...even if a specific shot is perfect you want multiple takes to be able to edit around anything...you never know what will happen from acts of god to electronic issues

Mhmm... In some way I can sorta understand in certain instances if they're working with limited time - like, say, requiring a road to be closed and have only a specific number of nights to do it - but yeah... I hope once they can film things out of the way of the public they'll be adding to that number of takes. Surely.

Number of takes doesn't equal quality. Depends on a lot of factors. Could be the director's preference ("Let's get it in 3"), could be time constraints, could be because they are shooting only what they need and thus don't need tons of angles. Hell, some director's do 1 or 2 takes. A possible nightmare for their editors but maybe not if the director know's exactly what he or she wants.

Either way a lot of takes won't necessarily make or break a film, especially if you can go back and do reshoots if you absolutely need to. Just get what you need and/or what you're happy with. Film is flexible like that.

no right minded director would only do 3 takes....no matter how well they come out...Directors aim for multiple takes to clear their tracks.

its a straight up waste of money to go back and have to reshoot...it is only a last ditch effort

saying they got it in 3 shows the quality of the film as powder said

now if it was 3 takes of the same shot then ok maybe ...but only 3 takes on a feature film for one sceneis a very bad thing..do you want me to scan my notes from school and years of studying this crap

so much bad can happen, what is the video works but the audio doesnt, what if while editing the editor just can not use any of it, what if Fox rips a huge loud fart dialog, what if fox's hair is in her face, etc etc, footage gets damaged in travel, corrupted or deleted( yes it happens)....already those scenes cant be used, and they wont have anymore to work with

even animated movies dont do 1 take....hell "I am Groot" took multiple takes per scene

Yeah, They do multiple takes of a scene, so that when they edit the movie together, They find the best takes that show the better performance from the actors.

yea, thats what i keep saying, you cant do that in only 3 takes

many "blooper" scenes are sometimes those takes just to get a feel of the scene before doing it

what if one of those takes they decided to do silly voices...there goes that scene in the recycle bin

cause guess what you also have to match the audio to the lips of the actors and if they are goofing off it wont work

you guys think im just typing this to see myself on this board, i am trying to educate you on how movies are supposed to work when directors and studios who care are at the Helm and not just trying to cash in on nostalgia

you guys realize how hard it is to work with limited things try making a 5 minute short film with only 1 take of each scene...its impossible...you want them to make a 2 hour film with limited scenes and expect all this other crap to work out too

If you storyboard a scene and it's only a Med close up and that's all you need it's not uncommon to just get what you need, and move on. Obviously they need to shoot around to get everybody so its really not a big deal to shoot out 3 takes from whatever angles you need and then keep going. You don't have to shoot out every single angle a **** load of times, especially if you don't need every single angle a **** load of times. That's a waste of time. And if you get it into editing and it doesn't work then yes, you can do reshoots. 3 takes does not equal bad.

really dude.....really...you think you can just shoot a wide shot and edit it to what you need...here are just a few of the bare mininum shots needed to properly edit

Close up actor 1
close up actor 2
establishing shot
Medium shot actor 1
medium shot actor 2
the long shot
medium shot actors together

you are telling me in 3 takes they got atleast those and are going to be able to properly edit it to make it not look jarring..im not even talking about story i am talking about cinematography, shoots and the pieces needed to make a movie look like it wasnt made on a JVC or Sony you buy at Walmart for 150 bucks

im done with this shot talk clearly its falling on deaf ears...if you care read this and see where this is a problem

keep in mind, that they are also capturing motion capture data for the performances, So they do the multiple takes to make sure they get not only the dialogue, But the motions for the character and there faces.

And then they do some ADR during post production to re-record the dialogue.

I think you're not getting what I'm saying. You know each camera angle is a take right? As in you set up for a wide, shoot what you need and move on. That's a take. "What's next?" "Med cu". Shoot it out and lets move. That's another take. I'm not saying shoot a wide 3 times and pack up and call it a day, and obviously he isn't either. But I am saying there's no absolute standard for what you have to get, and that's coming from my experience as an editor. You give me the storyboards, the shots and what the scene calls for and you put it together. If it doesn't work or it's not enough, we'll go from there. You don't have to move the camera, reset lights and get a med, a med cu, a cu etc of every single scene if you don't need it, especially for a big project like this with so many moving parts. If you only need a wide shot of a scene, you get that that wide shot, shoot it 3 times if you want and move on.

I once got punched in the face by a monkey in Afghanistan, immediately following a firefight.

So, there's that.

Where do we go from here?
