Storywise, it's setup, but as a Batman fan I can say that I like the way Tynion writes Killer Croc. Never liked the mindless monster version that was being pushed through the 2000s.
Hey, I didn't know you did articles on Batman TPBs!

If I ever amass a Batman TPB collection, it's gonna be thanks to you easily listing the early Batman chronology with your two articles on AiPT.

Thanks man!

I've always wanted to get into Batman comics but just don't have the money or time. If the TMNT franchise never existed then Batman would probably be my #1 franchise. I'd probably be posting on some Batman forum right about now instead.

I'd love to get more into X-men too, but alas. I've watched all the cartoons and movies with them at least, and many of the videogames so I know the lore.

It's so frustrating to me that you think "getting into comics" means having to read every single thing ever published. I get that it's a thing TMNT fans do, because it's a much smaller scale, it's a finite thing that can be collected to completion, but even then it's kind of stupid because only about 1/3 of ALL the TMNT comics ever produced are even worth reading.

I've told you, if you want to get into Batman comics I can get you there really easy. You don't have to be a sadist like me and try and own "everything". Such roads lead to madness. For starters, there were NO Batman comics published before 1974 that were even worth reading so don't even worry about them. See? That mountain in your head just got a whole lot smaller already. Everything else worth reading is reprinted in cheap TPBs.

You keep making dumb excuses and I'ma smack you, and that's not a thing you want.

No stuff worth reading before 1974? There is in the midst of the greatest stretch of comics in Batman history. Too many to list. I do agree about the ridiculous compulsion to read everything however. Just looking the back issue archivee and read what looks appealing.

As for Cubed just take his bucket hat and...*wham*

you probably have read some of these Batman stories before?
but if you haven't you might want to consider checking out some of these?
they are pretty enjoyable as stand-alone stories that don't require any prior research.

Batman: Year One
Robin/Batgirl: Year One
Batman Killing Joke
Batman & Son
Batman: Hush
Batman: Judgement on Gotham

What's Judgment on Gotham? The Dredd crossover?

I also HIGHLY recommend Batman: Under the Hood.

Fine, let's say 1972. I admit, I picked a general year at random. Someone like Cubed wouldn't care about those books, though, partly because they were so long ago and partly because those stories were mostly not translated into other media. I have a feeling he'd mostly get into the 80s/90s stuff but nothing earlier. I mean I don't know, just a feeling.

"Under the Hood" is pretty worthless without "A Death In The Family" though. And actually, without most everything from 1987-1991, also. Jason's return lacks any punch at all if you haven't read all the books that show Batman actually dealing with Jason's death in the first place. "A Lonely Place Of Dying", for instance, is essential.

yeah that was the very first Batman/Judge Dredd cross-over with art by Simon Bisley.

It is indeed. But "A Death in the Family" is rather dated, what with Joker being the Iranian ambassador, et al. It's still good, just dated.

That sh*t will never not be hilarious.

I admit, there is some "You had to be there" in it. But trust me, it's wonderful.

Plus, all comics eventually become "dated", to some degree. No matter how you try, contemporary topics, politics, fashions, and trends sneak their way in as the writer tries to create a fictionalized world that's still recognizable as similar to the reader's own. That's just the way it goes, I kind of don't think you can take points off a story for it. Especially a good story.

The type of Batman I like is one that isn't too dark but isn't too campy either. Sort of similar to the Batman in the movies or B:TAS cartoon. I don't like, "dark and crazy Batman" and I don't care for campy/silly Batman either.

There needs to be the right balance between the two that let's me enjoy it. Same for the villains and the other characters. Judging by comics its either one extreme in dark/brooding violence or too campy and silly.

Also I don't care for any Justice League or superhero team up stuff in comics either, I prefer Batman and his sidekicks in Gotham City. Once you start putting Batman into space or fighting supervillains alongside Superman/Wonder Woman, etc. I sort of lose interest.

Leo, you pushed my Batman buttons. I love 1969-1984 Batman more than any other period. It is the basis of Batman: TAS which partially defines Batman for me. If he favors Batman: TAS this era may be something Cubed needs to explore more of. Not Brave and the Bold or World's Finest, but definitely rhe teo Batman centric books. Don’t get me started on how Jason Todd is my all-time least favorite comic book character. More of that era needs to be collected.

I agree that all three Year Ones, Batman, Robin, and Batgirl. Some of the best Batman related stories ever written.

Cubed, I think you and I have the exact same taste in Batman.

I have not bought a DC single issue in about 3 years or so, (TMNT take up my entire comic budget.) Man I was really pulled out of the story by the constant advertisements. I'm sure I'll get used to them because there is no way they are going anywhere but it sure was different from the TMNT books I'm accustomed to.

this it too true!!!
that's why it drives me nuts when some comic writers drop flavor of the week celebrity names in their comics!!!

it's like - "DUDE! don't you know that nobody will care about _______ in a month from now???"

Reading this suddenly makes me realize the battle I'm really waiting for is Batman vs Shredder.

This is about the TMNT/Batman crossover right? lol

So I read the first issue, and I really enjoyed it. My favorite pages were the 1st appearance of the TMNT where the scientist is like "red, blue, purple, orange" and it shows them in the dark.

The Shredder/Batman confrontation was really need.

Did he slash that pipe to make steam? I wasn't really clear on that panel... I guess that is what happened.

The art was amazing, so was the coloring. The look of the book is just fantastic. A+ on that. The writing and all that was great too.

It is just 1 issue of 6 total, but the 1st issue came off like a teaser kinda to me, but then again I guess it is supposed to right?

Looking forward to #2 very much. (buy the issues people, don't wait around for the trade)

that panel in question, the Shredder threw a smoke pellet.

i couldn't agree more about not waiting for the trade!!!
this series is definitely worth getting the single issues!

and i did notice that DC is also using a heavier stock paper than they normally use for single issues.
that was a concern of mine being that IDW wasn't going to be publishing this mini.
