Secondly just because they're genetically engineered doesn't mean their perfect, and again, they're not raised by the scientists so as Donnie grows up how would they fix him? They wouldn't know he's visually impaired when he's a little turtle.
Everyone saying this isn't the turtles "we" know....There have been a dozen different types of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stores so this movie is going to create it's own TMNT story like all the other ones, with some borrowing from the past.

The turtles have super strength and bulletproof shells. I think it qualifies as super soldiers, especially when it's explicitly stated in the trailers by Knoxville that they were created as weapons. Training in Ninjitsu doesn't make sense when they're powered like they are.
If you're genetically engineering creatures to be weapons, I think you would consider improving something like eyesight whether or not there's a deficiency. The design contradicts their own set up. Donnie needing glasses would make sense if the Turtles mutation was accidental.
The issue is that the turtles have never been superheroes with super abilities before. It makes the ninja aspect of the franchise pointless. It's not TMNT, but something else dressed as TMNT.

3. I do not think this is overkill. I have wanted an adult take on the Turtles for a very long time. I LOVE the 90's movie. It is dark and serious, and fun at the same time. I want that but more. I have Leo tattooed on my leg, and he's got blood dripping off his swords. When I was a kid, I wanted the turtles we had, I'm an an adult now, I want an adult TMNT, because to me they have the foundation to be the most entertaining super heroes.
I watch and love the Nick version of TMNT. To me it's childish but adult enough at the same time. In my opinion it's the best version of TMNT we've ever had. I keep saying this, OUR turtles have had MANY different versions, and this will just be another.
At first I hated everything about it, I hated Megan Fox being cast, I hated the "white shredder". I hated the Alien Turtle idea. When I saw the turtles for the first time, I was so sad. I watched the first trailer, and thought, good god this is terrible. Knoxville as Leo? No this can't be!
Then every single trailer since the 1st one has made it more and more clear this will be a fun action packed movie, and we will see the turtles do things in live action that we've NEVER seen them do before. I cannot wait.
I don't understand why people can't allow movies to create their own path. Comic books change the histories all the time, but if a movie does it, it's the ruining it. It's very silly.

This very clearly isn't an adult take on the TMNT. I would say the first film will be a far more adult take on the TMNT that were likely going to get going forward in movies. It's sad that we're talking about a film that's nearly 25 years old when comic book movies have matured greatly in that time.
