A headline saying a major character dies in a comic is obviously a ploy to bring in sales from casual readers. We know that IDW would never kill off a Turtle, but the "casuals" who only read the comic off and on would probably pick up this issue just to see what happened.
Its the same reason DC and Marvel advertise "The death of Wolverine" or "The Death of Robin" or "The Death of Batman and Superman" even though we always know they'll come back to life soon enough.
