Neither is Batman himself, by that argument. Just a rich guy with a brilliant mind who has WAAAY too much time on his hands, and some serious mental issues. The MIB's defend against alien threats with tech WAAY beyond what is available/known on Earth, so- yeah. Superheroes all the way, man. The GB's are no different. They defend people from things that most folks can't deal with. Like, I dunno, the ghosts of dead Carpathian tyrants who try to resurrect themselves by taking over the bodies of helpless infants. Or ancient gods who decide to start up the end of the world through a giant marshmallow man. Stuff that NORMAL people can't even HOPE to handle!!
Actually, YES, it DOES. Ecto has more than JUST the PKE and bigger proton pack weapon. We just don't see most of it. I know it also carries spares of all their gear, serves as a mobile base with all the miscellaneous equipment Ray and Egon felt like installing, and also can be used to "attract" ghosts. (If I recall the cartoon right. I seem to remember an episode where they were driving it around getting ghosts to follow it.)
Ecto doesn't NEED those other abilities- it's intended to assist in the GBs' job- catching GHOSTS/DEMONS, which are usually incorporeal and/or capable of possessing humans, throwing objects around, or other activities that most of Batman's villains can't do. Ecto is a weapon itself, Ie, it has it's own portable containment unit, as well as "souped-up" versions of their normal gear. That's all it NEEDS to do. Not drive up walls, go super speed (Which is actually pretty ridiculous for a vehicle driving in New York, anyway- traffic ALONE would make that impossible! To say nothing of the lay-out and size of most city streets....), and the like.

I did not know that other stuff about the Ectomobile. It's been literally years and years since I've seen the cartoon.
Driving up or over walls would still be useful I think. Since ghosts can fly and go through objects. Super speed can go either way. I mean most cities have traffic. The Batmobile is larger and wider than a normal car anyway, regardless of the speed.
I agree the things they do are super heroic. I still doubt most people really consider the franchise in the same boat as Batman and the others though. Same with MIB. I've only seen these labeled as horror and alien action movies.
I mean you do not see people referring to Ghostbusters as one the great superhero movies of the 80s. It's always horror, comedy or general sci-fi.
