First Vintage figure weapons: What's going on with them?

The weapons and gear that came with the first vintage figures don't look very good at all. I don't understand why anyone would really care about the old weapons, unless it's for collector's sake (which a lot of the time it probably would be.) I currently have my vintage turtles holding 2k3 turtle weapons, and it looks a lot better, IMO.

Now, as the vintage line continued, the weapons got better, like for Super Shredder. I like his gear.
