It can't be an adaptation of City at War. That was about warring factions of the Foot resulting from the death of Shredder, the coming of Karai to clean up the mess and kill Foot Elite loyal to Shredder, Casey becoming an adoptive dad to another woman's baby and dealing with his feelings for April, and the Turtles coping mentally and otherwise with a lifetime of growing up being trained to kill Shredder for Splinter and the resulting circle of blood vengeance.

1. Shredder isn't dead.

2. Karai is Shredder's "granddaughter" and isn't going to be killing any Foot anytime soon.

3. Casey isn't going to be meeting any Gabrielles or raising any Shadows anytime soon. Or probably ever.

4. The Turtles weren't raised to kill Shredder and again, he isn't even dead. And in fact they are specifically taught not to kill by Splinter, period, and haven't killed anybody except Slash (they think)... and he didn't even die.

So how can this be in any way an adaptation of City at War?

All of this said, far be it for me to begrudge a long, sprawling urban ninja action TMNT story arc. After the last "ninja action" arc, though, I can only be cautiously optimistic.

I was gonna type up something like that. Thank you Andrew.

On top of what you said, CaW came after years of story material, like 4 years worth, in-universe. Cityfall is taking place in a yet young IDW universe.

That being said, the fact that this isn't City at War is NOT a mark against it. I can already tell that I'm going to get annoyed by constant comparison between the two.

I'm having a feeling this will be like comparing nick and 2k3.
Why can't we keep things seprate,
I'm not treating it as city at war, I'm treating it as a new arc

I agree. And even if IDW decides to borrow cues from the Mirage material, it would be pretty weird to arrive at their equivalent of "City at War" if we haven't even gotten their equivalent of "Return to New York" yet. Or even their equivalent of issue #1, for that matter.

So this is the post you were responding to?

I don't think anyone is implying that it will be IDW's adaptation of City at War; it is IDW's answer to City at War. There is a BIG difference. Even the 2003 series' City at War story arc was SIGNIFICANTLY different from the Mirage storyline from whence it took its name...

How will Leo turn heel? What will be the final straw?

But an answer to which part? Karai killing Foot to ease tensions? Casey raising another woman's baby? The Turtles coping with being raised to kill Shredder?

I don't get it...

That was "City at War" in name only. "Return to New York" even more so, embarrassingly so.

In coping with his killing of Slash, it'll probably go down in one of a few ways when he is officially offered the job:

A) Splinter and/or the Turtles tell him to, to get closer to Shredder or at least learn more about the inner workings of the Foot and their operation and take them all down later on.

B) Leonardo goes rogue, against orders, but his intentions remain honorable, to again, get closer to Shredder or at least learn more about the inner workings of the Foot and their operation and take them all down later on.

C) Leonardo is brainwashed or drugged somehow by the Foot.

D) Someone is kidnapped or threatened with mortal harm by the Foot, or possibly the Foot offer Leonardo unequivocal peace between the Foot and Leonardo's family as long as he plays ball. Meanwhile, he still is planning to, you guessed it, get closer to the Shredder or at least learning more about the inner workings of the Foot and their operation with designs on taking them all down later on.

I think it's probably A or B.

I might be reading into the cover too much, but if that's Leo falling through a glass ceiling, ala Mirage, one can only wonder if perhaps he gets amnesia and Shredder fills him with lies, which could explain this

It's Raph. IDW has them all with the rainbow bandannas now and Santolouco covers never show them with the all-reds.

I actually think that is Raphael, and that it is a reference to the first movie. So far they seem only to have referenced the second and third movies in this series. So I wasn't surprised at all when I saw that cover.

I just remembered this is probably also going to involve Old Hob's gang. I know he only has Slash with him now but I expect 2 or 3 more.

You do know I'm going to try and shoehorn the comparisons between the two, right?

Actually, I could see him turning this early on because they have not had years of family time and bonding. It becomes less likely the longer they wait as the family dynamics would be strengthened.

I gotta disagree there. 4kids Return To New York is, admittedly, a poor adaption tonally, but it's still pretty fun in the context of that show and they hit most of the major beats at least.

4kids City at War... I can't even sit through it. Totally half-assed half-hearted "attempt". I honestly wish they'd never even tried doing it.

I was literally shocked to see Peter's season 2 and CaW production notes from his blog. He put up like zero fuss about it.

I'd like this one. Leo's line early on in Secret History of the Foot kind of points to this, when he said something about anything you learn about your enemy will help you defeat them or whatever.

I know it's Raphael. It could be black and white and it's plainly Raph, because of the way Santolouco draws them all differently.

But speaking of mask colors, I kinda hope that Leo puts on Slash's black mask when he works for Shredder. That would be cool.

Yes, but second to Splinter's, his memories of their past life and Tang Shen are most vivid.
