Turtles Forever: New Family Favorite

This is some pretty creative writing for an animated movie. I watched it for the first time recently, with my son, and loved it! I can see why there are worldwide Turtle fans!

Love the old school and the new school!

Yeah I liked it a lot too, though fans of the OT generally don't like it because it treats that particular run quite badly.

Something that I really liked about that movie is that it features a lot of light humor (like the whole 4th wall thing between OT raph and hun) and that it also applies some logic to the fred wolf mutagen (something that in the nick series has already ignored; yeah, I'm looking at you fishface and dogpound).

Most OT fans loved it, the people complaining are a very vocal minority. They don't get that the OT turtles weren't meant to be taken seriously, and I say this as a huge fan of the original cartoon.

The only scene that should have been cut was the OT turtles crying in 4kids Raph's arms, the others were fine.

My mistake then. I've not been around for that long and that was the impression I got from a comment I read a while back

You should look through the original review thread for the movie from back in 2009. Most people loved it upon their initial watch.

There are some obvious problems with the way the original turtles were handled, but its nowhere near the big deal some people make it out to be.

Problems with the original turtles or the OT turtles? I'm sure I know what you mean, but have to be sure.

I love the movie too. Just wish the Mirage Turtles would have been in it longer. I think they're awesome in the show.

Turtles Forever rocks the house.

I saw the uncut version when it made the rounds online four years ago, and was very impressed. I hadn't gotten back into the Turtles, nor, at the time, seen the 2003 show yet--but I was still excited and enjoyed every moment of it. Something about "Turtles Forever" is just...wow. It's tremendous fun.

My gut told me at the time that, despite the complaining I heard, the OT Turtles "felt" accurate to my vague childhood memories, and today, after rewatching the old cartoon and the whole of 2k3, that feeling is confirmed.

This is awesome, in other words.

"Turtles Forever" is a love letter to the franchise as a whole, and proof of the old bit of wisdom that parodies are best done by people who know and love the source material. Making fun of something doesn't mean you dislike it.

I felt no meanspiritedness, no attempt to flatter the 2k3 Turtles over anyone else, but an honest evaluation of the differences that would pop up if these universes ever met. The OT characters weren't 100% accurate, but that's only because different writers were portraying them: the broad strokes were there.

The only shame is that the uncut release never made it here on DVD, but I really should pick it up in some form anyway.

LOL, well consider me as part of that "minority" then...

While I enjoy "Turtles Forever" by itself and do like to watch it. I do feel that the 4Kids writers unfairly portrayed the OT Turtles. But then again, I'm not too surprised since there was sometimes a snide hint toward most references to the OT in the 4Kids show. The 4Kids show was good, but the OT references were lowbrow. I know others will say that 4Kids were "complimenting" the OT, but when you compare the OT references of 4Kids to Nick. Well...there seems to be a tinge of distaste of the OT with 4Kids. (i.e. Raph smacking Michelangelo everytime he tries to say "Cowabunga!")

It's somewhat annoying when some say that "Turtles Forever" accurately depicted the OT Turtles characters when its more a Flanderization of them. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...Flanderization With the 4kids Turtles lecturing the OT Turtles so often, it made the OT Turtles come across to be just as incompetent as Bebop and Rocksteady. Especially when this incompetence is pointed out again and again and again in the movie.

Yes, the OT Turtles had obvious slapstick fighting methods, but they almost always took the threats by any villain seriously in the original show and didn't laugh it off or cower away as in "Turtles Forever". Seasons 1, 7, 8-10 (Red Sky Seasons) at least minimally prove that.

I think its great that you and your son are bonding over a new found love of the Turtles. One of the main reasons I try to keep so many things from my childhood is so I can one day share those experiences with the younger generation of my family. And Turtles Forever is a great bridge between old and new fans. I loved the OT and after watching TF I re-watched all of the '03 show (first time watching it since it originally airded) and ended up appreciating it a lot more.

-And I would have liked to see the OT turtles handled a little bit better, but I still loved the film and think they did a great job. Plus the explanation of multiple dimensions in which turtles exist was always how I imagined it to work.

mostly I blame the fact on the bad portrayel on the fact I don't think 4kids can do good comedy right (at least the type of comedy that they did for the 87 turtles) and my proof in that is all the bad jokes they do in their anime dubs

I mean, the 87 turtles really did have some good moments when you they weren't trying to get a laught "vs. the foot underground" "87 Leo vs 03 Raph/he is like sensei" "Let's do it" just to name a few

Turtles Forever made the OT turtles into goofy, useless, incapable idiots needing to be babysat. I am truly surprised to find out there are any OT fans who weren't offended.

Agreed.

I can enjoy the movie, and I certainly appreciate the concept - seeing different generations of Turtles team up is super fun - but the "flanderization" of the OT Turtles is pretty obvious. I remind myself that it was written by the 4kids team - who I felt didn't really know how to handle comedy - so I can better enjoy the comedic moments they did get right as well as the story as a whole.

The DVD of this is now one of my most cherished possessions and I am proud to have it right next to the 1990 movie. I do agree about the OT Turtles portrayal and I am not exactly happy with it. If only they had the original voice actors and David Wise on the writing team, then we would have gotten a truly awesome teamup with the OT and 2K3 Turtles.

Annoyed? Yes.

Offended? Eh...there are more important things to get worked up about, LOL. Besides, we all know how easily these threads can escalate into a flame war if the opinions get too strong here.

It's on YouTube.

I just liked seeing the 4-Kids turtles in... H-H-H D-D-D. Also the representation of the OT turtles wasn't that bad, it's just that the 4-Kids turtles thought that they were lame. Note: I'm only a fan of season 1 and 2 of the OT... if that really matters.

You mean the same OT Turtles who all saved the day at various points in the movie?

It was a unrepresentative parody of something the world loved, presented to a new generation of kids who wouldn't know any better. I don't think "offended" is too strong a word.

I mean I definitely see your point chrisdude, but if people are that shortsighted in considering the "Turtles Forever" OT Turtles as accurate without even seeing the OT itself... well, that's their loss. But "Turtles Forever" is already made and out there, its useless to get upset over spilled milk. ***shoulder shrug***
Besides, knowing the 4Kids history of jab references to the OT (the "too cool for OT" behavior)... it's similar to those having an inferiority complex. Not surprising, knowing that their version is always going to be in the shadows of the OT's legacy and impact. In fact, if it wasn't for the OT's unprecedented success the 4Kids series would be nonexistent as a whole, and that the two would forever be compared with each other...and I'm sure the 4Kids writers grudgingly understood that.

There may have been a few times the OT Turtles saved the day, but in "Turtles Forever" one couldn't tell if the OT Turtles merely stumbled into saving the day or if there was a shred of genuine intelligent, brave behavior that led up to it.

I really wanted to give 4Kids the benefit of a doubt, but looking back I just feel the depiction of the Fred Wolf TMNT came off too mean-spirited. That being said I don't feel the movie has held up well over the last few years.
