"Twilight of the Ring" was the Mirage comic I picked up by accident as a child, and everything within its pages was pretty disturbing. Of course, now I realize what an excellent story it was, but the notion of the Turtles fighting a giant rat is still slighlty upsetting, for obvious reasons.

Some things don't seem as disturbing to me now than when I was a kid, but I'll list them anyway:

While now the death of the Mutanimals looks crude to me, as well as petty (because of the cancelled TV series), seeing them all lying in pools of (black) blood after being brutually gunned down is heavy stuff for a kids' comic.

The zombie soldiers in the Archie Cyber-Turtles arc were arguably standard stuff, but the one that opens the issue by saying "Killl mee...." was pretty chilling.

Also for Young Pterobat, I'm sure giving the cartoon version of Mutagen Man that giant skull-head was meant to make him look more "friendly", but I sure didn't make that distinction when I was young.

While "Insane in the Membrane" has already been discussed, on top of everything else, what got to me was that Baxter had to hold his body together with the crudest implements, incluiding *nails* and *staples*, and also that nobody at the facility seemed to realize or care what was happening to him. Bishop had walked off, and there was no one else around. He was, as usual, alone.

I can't view FW Baxter's story as something earnestly sad and tragic because of the tone of the old show, but I will admit that parts of it are pretty messed up when you think about them.

Yeah... Pretty heavy...

It makes me happy to see that they ended up in a good place after all that...

Oh, boy, I forgot a few more from the Archie comics:

Of course, that art was made to contrast with the vision Null gave Candy Fine of the Mutanimals burning in hell, which I've heard was cut from the European editions.

Death trying to take Kid Terra's soul near the end of the Four Hoursemen arc, especially because everyone is standing around and watching and not sure what to do.

Null saying he wants to make Juntarra and Azrael part of his "harem", and then showing us the mind-controlled Candy later on.

Even if the book was having trouble with the editors near the end of its run, I'm still shocked they got away with some of this.

The early issues weren't that bad, but, though it's light in comparison to the moments named above, Krang taking over Shredder's body by squishing himself over Shredder's head, and still being unable to feel the pain of that body, is pretty disgusting. Silly, but unsettling.

April being a drawing was disturbing for various reasons. Nothing in the story was as awful as Peter having her go back in time in the body of a roach, and making it a point to tell us that she had sex with other roaches. Because we needed to know all about all that. By "other roach things", I'm assuming April meant she also ate garbage and scat while a roach. F*cking. Awful.

The single most disturbing thing in the entire story? That the *creator* of the character, as well as of the entire TMNT universe, actually thought that was a logical, necessary story to tell. He thought it was good, and by telling it, it's implicit that this was always where April's story was meant to go, and I for one refuse to accept it, because it's horrible. Clearly, though, we're meant to accept it, because he wrote it and charged us 4 bucks for he privilege of reading it.

I'm 100% convinced the "April is a drawing" storyline was the end result of all the acid Laird ("allegedly") took in college. It's the only logical explanation: Major league flashback horror show. That sh*t never really leaves your brain, you know, it just kinda floats around in there which is why people have flashbacks. Don't do drugs, kids.

Hell, the one where she almost suffocated in that air-tight vault really got to me as a kid cause it was one of the most realistic possible deaths she could have gotten, instead of some sort of cartoony ray run death.

Let's not forget Baxter's execution by Krang. He was damn lucky that the fly wandered in there. For better or for worse, at least he was still alive. And then his apparent 'death' at the end of season 3 by the giant spider... that was somehow forgotten about when the Turtles hit saturday morning.
Probably, the apart-falling spacecraft hits the spider web, causing Baxter Stockman to fall down to the ground on that planet.

Yeah, I concur with the "Mutanimals burning in Hell" image. Man, that was pretty terrible for a kid who loved those characters!

Also, the 2-page spread of Ninjara getting shot was unexpected, I just assumed she had died in that moment when I read it:

Image Comics Presents Teenage Mutilated Ninja Turtles: Back when the turtles were part of the Image universe the guys went through a lot of changes one being shredded like mozzarella cheese. Raph not only lost an eye he end up looking like two face and had to wear Casey's mask for awhile. Don was blown to pieces but was saved by being merged with a killer robot and became a cyborg. Leo got his hand eaten by a giant mutant lizard. Splinter got turned into a reject manbat. Mikey I think he had sex with some lame looking spiny lizard alien tell the truth he would have been better off getting a limb ripped off. it was really disturbing having to see the guys look like that what was also creepy was that you got the feeling this **** was permanent.

Same as it never was shocked this didn't get a mention yet The Turtles die sure its an alternate version but they actually die on screen and in such a sad a pathetic way as well. That was pretty disturbing to me.

The names Michael Bay, Jonathan Liebesman, and Platinum Dunes associated with a TMNT movie dont know about anyone else but I got chills thinking about the thought.

Raphael shooting Verminator X with a gun. I think its the only time in the franchise we see the Turtles try to kill a villain with a gun.

I have bittersweet memories of seeing this image.

On the hand, it was nice to see the characters portrayed as happy and heavenly given that the last image we had seen of them supposedly had them burning in hell.

On the other hand, that was the point where I finally realized the Mutanmials were truly dead and the comic probably had NO intention or bringing them back to life.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. But pizza is a dish best served hot.
Truly it would be a paradox.

I know exactly how you feel... It was comforting to see they were at peace in a better place, but at the same time it just makes you realize that they were dead.. buried.. lifeless..

Haha, I'm pretty sure that's the first time anybody ever professed their Platonic love to me.
