Ha! Yeah, the obsession with the red masks never made any sense to me. Sure, it's cool in a nostalgic sense, but it simply doesn't work as well when you're talking about visual story-telling in color. The Turtles' aren't always colored consistently, skin-wise, and if they don't happen to be holding their weapons, you can't tell them apart. Plus, even when the Turtles ARE colored consistently, the differences are fairly subtle. Going back and reading the original series, I was often at a loss for who was saying what, even with the aid of color. I mean, come on, these are comics, they tell stories visually. If you have four characters that, in many scenes are indistinguishable from one-another, that creates narrative difficulty.

Sure it is only nostalgia with the red masks, no nostalgia at all with colored masks, technodrome, B&R, Krang... Oh wait.

I did not have any issue seeing the differences between the turtles in the IDW series, its a very strange attitude to want more color coding, when they have different skin tone and attitude. it's a very easy McDonald junk food approach.

Hah, of course those things are nostalgic! I certainly wouldn't argue otherwise, but that doesn't mean that the red masks work well in colored comics. Some people prefer red masks, and that's fine, but let's be honest with one another. The red masks are no more functionally superior to other interpretations than the Fred Wolf cartoon was superior in writing quality to Shakespeare. The fact that this is the way their creators intended them to be counts for a lot, but it doesn't mean that the designs or stories necessarily function best with red masks.

Don't misunderstand me. I'm not arguing for the superiority of the Fred Wolf cartoon, or for red, blue, orange, and purple. I'm just pointing out that it is difficult to differentiate between nearly identical character designs, especially when you are working in a visual medium. You say they have different skin tones and attitudes? Well, that's true in some books, not in others, and like I said, the skin tone differentiation can be pretty subtle. Sometimes it is flat out nonexistent. I've got colored versions of the original comics, and while I love them, they aren't always super easy to follow, characterization-wise. In the early issues the Turtles aren't super well defined anyway, and while the seeds of who these characters would eventually become are there, the differences between Raphael and Michelangelo are, at first blush, primarily connected to their weaponry. When there is a talking Turtle head in a panel, as often as not it's next to impossible to figure out who's speaking if you take that panel by itself. Heck, sometimes its a problem even in a full body shot. Now, Eastman and Laird are excellent storytellers, so you can usually figure it out through context, but not always. Either way, those types of narrative gymnastics hurt the flow of a story. This is a problem that the red masks don't do much to alleviate.

These types of things certainly don't ruin the comics, and the Mirage books are still my favorite interpretations in that medium (though IDW is making headway!). However, it's a minor annoyance that could so very easily be avoided that I simply have a hard time understanding people's bitterness about any attempt to avoid it.

I couldn't have said it any better myself, kind sir. Lets face it, people, despite how we each feel about our favorite iterations, there is no right or wrong version! No incarnation trumps another one. The original Mirage books may be the source material that started it all, but that doesn't make them any more or less special than the cartoons or movies. In my opinion, that is what the IDW writers are trying to convey with their interpretation!

From the few previews alone and issue 13 that I read on the TMNT app, I love what IDW did with the following charactera:
- April O'neil
- Splinter (I heard about some reincarnation thing going on... hmm, I don't know for now but it could turn out nice)
- The Shredder (badass incarnate)
- Karai (hottest version)

I still don't know what I think of the turtles. Raphael seems to be the main focus out of the 4. I don't know why media today see the "brash, hot-head" as the most "main hero" worthy type. Leo's way of speaking isn't as refined as I would expect someone as polite/cool-headed would sound like. He says things like "you alright, man"; "I wanna". lol Whut?

Anyway, I can't wait to get my hands on the comics because despite having dowloaded the digital app, I'm still unable to read any of the IDW issues..
I made a thread about that here: http://forums.thetechnodrome.com/showthread.php?t=39231

This is an old thread, but I'd rather bump this one then make a new one about the same thing.

Honestly my interest in IDW has slipped over the past few months, and I'm not sure why. I'm still buying the book of course, but I'm not as excited about it as I was around a year ago.

I guess the reason I liked it more in 2011 and most of 2012 was because it was our only fix of new TMNT stories at the time because the Nick show hadn't started yet. But now that it has I just feel indifferent to the comic.

I'll continue following it however.

Interesting... I read through the first half of IDW at one sit, then I started following it. What I think is, the first half was nice, but recent stories like SHotFC and City Fall easily kick them in the ass, considering quality.

So for me, it's much better right now then before.

Quite the opposite for me. I miss the energy and verve it had at the beginning of the series, when it really seemed like anything could happen and before it devolved into a series of winking rehashes and Saturday morning cartoon plots.

That said -- 1) I read everything prior to #21 in trade format first, so that may affect the way I view it, and 2) This last issue was a significant step up, in my mind, and if it sets the tone for the next few stories more than the first half of "City Fall," I'll be pretty excited again.

I started reading the IDW comics casually and wasn't that into the reincarnation origin, but as the main story and micro stories carried on, I find myself now totally immersed in the IDW universe and very much enjoying it.

Its the Nick toon that I'm losing interest in if anything.

You must have a short attention span, or must not like to read much. The series is only getting better from here. We got Bebop and Rocksteady getting into this and the eventual moment whenever Casey finds out his dad is Hun. Plus the fallout of evil Leo. It's just getting better and better.

I can only say there was one issue I did not like and that was the prequal to City Fall #21 I believe??

This is an old thread lol What a difference time can make and peoples opinions very well could have changed.

Think a while back I posted no, I wasn't. Today though, well yeah, I kinda am. That may be because of this new job I have, I don't have as much time to ride by and pick my books up, so when I get them, I may not even read them. So, I can't say it's a story problem, just more of a lack of time to sit down and actually read.

I'll admit I'm not as excited as I once was, but I'm still very interested in what's to come.

I've never read the Mirage and Archie series but have read all about them.

I love reading the IDW series, I'm getting the trade paperbacks as it's easier for me. i've read up to Vol 5 and got Vol 6 City Fall Part 1 and the Villian Micro Series on pre order. I can't wait to read them.

The whole reincarnation thing still upsets me a big deal and made me lose interest during the first year or so, but overall I'm now liking the series better, mainly due to Santolouco.
