My take on it was always that he believed he would die without seeing them again. It was his way of saying goodbye in the event that he was killed before they could find him.

Has anyone noticed the Turtles had entirely different body builds in this movie? Not to mention the 2007 movie... it's not like Nick was the first version to do this.

Agreed. This is the point in the film where I forget that I am watching puppets and I get drawn in. The lighting, the cinematography the performance, it is all excellent.

All the feels.

I think that he was trying to give a realistic view on what comes for us all, Death. He tries to tell his sons at the beginning that he won't always be there because since he is old he figures that he will go first, he just wants them to be prepared for the future; however, his sons are not really listening because they would rather have their pizza.

The scene where they come back from April's is a little heart breaking and emotional and they find the place torn up and Splinter gone. Raph's yell of fury. This movie still gets me excited for TMNT.

And on the note with Splinter speaking with Raph did you catch how shocked he looked when Splinter said he was unique? Seems Raph even in the Movie verse thought Splinter didn't love him as much as the others.

I wish I could remember exactly what I was reading but I remember reading an article talking about the story development for the first film and they mentioned that in one of the earlier drafts there was a scene where Raphael tells Splinter straight up that he doesn't believe that he loves him and that he prefers the others (particularly Leo) to him. As a parent that must break your heart hearing something like that from your son.

I think Splinter's last words, because it was like a final farewell.

I still get some chills when Shredder implies to the Turtles that he killed Splinter.

Plus the Turtles are giving everything they have and Shredder is barely breaking a sweat.

Shredder was pure evil and enjoyed manipulating whoever he could with words sweet as honey, but deadly none the less.

Two more I forgot.

When Casey rescues Splinter.

"Who are you"

"I'm Casey, a friend"

and

When Splinter disappears from Casey and Danny.

You know he's going to help his beaten down sons.

I voted for Splinters speech to Raphael. I do agree with most here though that Splinter's last words is indeed emotional and it probably is more so to the TMNT fans as a whole. Me being a huge Raph fan makes Splinters speech to Raphael more emotional and personal to me. They are both great scenes from the original movie and are still emotional to watch all these years later.

I know it's a movie but he had some serious strength.

Flipping Mikey over.
His last hit makes Leo spin like a tornado.
Flipping Raph in the air.

I'd have to say Splinter's final words carries more emotion. I get how if you love Raph, it could go the other way, but really, all it is is this: "My son... you don't HAVE to be such a douche." Whereas in the "campfire" scene, it was framed around the possibility he and the Turtles were never going to see each other again. Which, to me, carries much more weight.

I've never been a huge fan of Raph's various displays of "angst" because they're almost never explained in-universe. He literally has no reason to act the way he does half the time, which comes off as phony and contrived as Wolverine's various displays, simply marketing machismo to the alienated teen and pre-teen demographic. It's literally just a tag they hang on him; Raph is "The Angry One", and that's as far as his character's depth goes. And in the movie, Splinter more or less points out that none of his brothers act that way, he shouldn't either, and no matter how nicely and gently he phrases it, it's still basically a "grow the hell up and chill out" speech. Which, in this case, is lesser than his "I'm probably gonna die, but no worries, you guys are gonna do just fine, you don't need me anymore but I love ya anyway, peace out" speech.

One thing I did like, though, is that Raph's character did evolve over the sequels and make it a point to follow Splinter's advice from the first film. For all the sequels did horribly wrong, that's one thing they got very right. Usually, someone tells Raph to calm down, he mellows for a brief period and then goes right back to being an asshole. Now, different writers and the fact that II and III were more kids' movies obviously has a lot to do with the why and how, but still, seeing Raph change a bit in each movie was a lot more character depth than he usually gets. And without that scene from the first movie, it wouldn't feel as organic, and would probably have felt more like a parentally-mandated dumbing-down, rather than natural character development.

So it does have an important role, but dramatically I don't find the scene as affecting as the "final farewell" scene. I really don't even see how it's fair to compare. Again, if Raph had a solid reason to be such an angry D-bag in the first place, other than "every group on TV or in movies HAS to have one by law," maybe it would feel less contrived. As shown, it just stops the movie's plot so Splinter can tell him to lighten up. Again, nice if you love Raph, but if you just like him (or don't care for him at all), it just feels kind of tacked-on. We're never given any reason to think Splinter treats him lesser than the others, and the others are always shown being nice to him until HE blows THEM off. So overall, "The Talk" is less an emotional scene and more a plea to Raph for sanity. "You're really bringing the room down, guy..."

Spot on Leo656. I wish they could give a reason in Raphael behaving that way because it could unveil the hurt or tragedy behind that character which would give his character so much more profound depth and relatability.

I would choose the campfire scene as well, because it strikes at the hearts of Turtles that their beloved father-figure sensei could possibly be lost forever through death.

...By the way Leo656, have I told you how much I enjoyed your in-depth explanations? It's been too long...

Yet another place where I absolutely love the score. I really wish someone like La La Land Records could get their hands on the scores for these films because they really need to be released like yesterday.

I chose Splinter's talk with Raphael.

While I like both scenes, I prefer the down to Earth feel of the talk with Raphael. It's a father bestowing his knowledge onto his troubled son. It's a seemingly routine act being done by these over the top characters. To me it's a little more poignant to have that kind of contrast between cartoonish characters and a serious discussion about temper issues, than to have the Obi-Wan like scene at the campfire.

Because he believed that he was. What I don't understand is why the Turtles thought he was still alive when they chased down the Foot in New York.

My two favorite scenes in the movie. It's hard for me to decide between the two but I went with Raphael. I think it has to do with the fact that Splinter is specifically addressing Raph and his issues. The music and the manner in which the scene was shot was perfect. I've seen good reasons for why either is more emotional.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the new movie won't have any scenes with this kind of emotion.

I voted for Splinter's words to the turtles at the campfire...it made Michelangelo cry. Also, I like that scene where Donatello offers marshmallows: "Don't worry, I came prepared..haha"

But back to the message: it's a good one that Splinter gives the turtles. It also makes Raphael feel better knowing that Splinter is alive.
