Was IDW not allowed to name April's Dad, "Kirby" because they can't use Nick created characters outside the cartoon comic?

The reason I ask is Kirby appeared in episode 1 back in 2012 and this comic was written at least a year later. Tom Waltz would obviously know of Kirby.

Kirby technically counts as a new Nick created character so I wonder if they didn't want IDW naming April's dad the same thing.

Why should they name him Kirby when that has always been a completely separate character in the TMNT mythos outside of the Nick cartoon?

There's nothing wrong with it either way, but there's no reason to follow suit just because Nick did it. My guess is we'll see a separate "Kirby" again at some point in the TMNT franchise; no reason to conflate that name with April's dad forever.

Speaking of which -- Was April's dad unnamed throughout the entirety of Mirage? He's a plot point in the first few issues and in "City at War," and there's the flashback to April's origin in Volume 4. While I don't remember us getting a name at any of those points, I could be wrong.

Exactly. It's just a different version. Same reason we don't see Angel with the Purple Dragons or Old Hob in the Nick toon. Same reason we don't have Snakeweed in the IDW comics. They're both doing their own thing.

Tom named the character, so he is the one who should speak to the question, but when I think of Kirby in regards to TMNT, I think of the Mirage Don micro Kirby (aka, the King, Jack Kirby), and this obviously isn't that character. Had nothing to do with Nicktoon.

Since I'm new here, I don't know what the rules are regarding how long after an issue is released that we are expected to use spoiler tags. I'll play it safe and put them up for now. I agree with whoever above said that this issue seemed too short- but I think that's because it was so good! Campbell's art is very easy on the eye and super simple to follow. There was even a bonus TWO pages beyond the modern industry standard (20), and even with that the book felt short.

I can't get the "multi-quote" buttons to work, but I was intending to reply to people talking about how April is drawn "curvy" here. One of the awesome things about Campbell's art is that he can draw many types of women. If you've ever read Glory, he really demonstrates his versatility in this domain. It's kind of a rarity these days, when every woman in mainstream comics generally have the same body type.

Regarding Raph's temper you need to consider his view on this whole thing. He was on his own for a year and when he found his family again he embraced them with open arms. Not only that but based on what he has seen from his time with Splinter and his Brothers family is the most important thing.

When he sees Leonardo, basically cast aside his family, because of what happened to him that is going to incense him and naturally eventually he is going to have a reaction to the anger. Family is a paramount of the IDW series and considering how deeply ingrained in the Raph story it has been (him first being welcomed into the family and then watching as Splinter accepted his friend in as member of the family as well) his actions due to Leonardo being so against the help of them is completely in line with his character.

Not to mention that Splinter being the only one who could truly get him to stop spoke volumes about paying attention to character development since the entire conversation during issues 13 and 14 was about anger and learning to control it. I believe that Leonardo forsaking him as a student and son is making Splinter as angry as it is making Raphael but age and wisdom are allowing him to keep it in check.

He's still not completely there and still treats his brothers as outsiders It makes him look bad to be defending alopex and for all they know Leo and alopex could be leading the foot to them. Plus alopex did introduce herself with a fake sob story so it makes sense that raph wouldn't be so quick to believe it a second time. Remember just cause we know alopex is slowly turning a new leaf doesn't mean the characters have to be idiots and blindly take her in. I'd say Raph's anger is completely justified given the situation.

Considering many members live overseas and have to either wait for their local shop to aquire the book, have it shipped to them from the states or even wait for the trades I would wait a month at least. I personally always use spoiler tags no matter how old the book is.

2nd favorite Turtle is on the cover, I'm sold!

got this issue #28 animated #6 and Ultimate collection number 5 all in all a good day. I did like that the Turtles didn't take what Alopex said out of blind faith and Splinter pretty much said "I owe you , but I don't trust you" Casey meeting April's parents went as well as mine did with my girlfriends parents. Informal, very comfortable around strangers so long as their daughter says he's cool. and ended with me staying the night even though I only live 15 minutes away. was a little bit of a quick read but I burn through novels pretty fast so a comic is lucky if it takes me 3 minutes to read.

Edit: Anyone notice in Mirage April's dad died from the stroke but here he fought the good fight? could be coincidence but just thought I point it out.

This is the first issue in the main series that I haven't picked up on day one. Decided to save myself a drive and order it from an online store. Somewhere in the last year this book has sort of lost me. I'm still along for the ride, I'm just not sure for how much longer.

Can you give any info on how Koya was created, as far as "hey there could be a bird mutant to indirectly replace Alopex, how about a hawk?" or something else?

Cant wait to read this issue loving the series. tmnt is the comic I look forward to the most each month. I wish Sonic would pick up tho I'm losing interest in that series fast went downhill for me when it had the crossover with megaman.

In the meantime, a bit of trivia for you (and an answer to your question). I was inspired to bring Koya into the mix after I found this amazing fable online:

We were planning on creating a new mutant eventually, and this was the story that gave me the idea to turn Shredder's feathery pet into our newest baddie. All design credit goes to Ross Campbell, though, and what an awesome design it is!
