Seriously the production sample of Mutagen Man looks like Happy Meal quality, just larger. Playmates isn't getting a pass from me, they have to earn my support. I've already bought a lot of weak figures from them in this line and there's not enough strong figures to average it out.
They have the capacity to do better. We know because the Classics line is pretty strong and some of the earlier Nick turtles in the basic line are also really great and got very positive reactions. The first four turtles are truly good figures, and even the recent Shredder 2 looked like a good sign going forward. But with a lot of the secondary characters they are skimping in every possible way and it really sucks! And now that we've seen Casey and Mutagen Man (and to a lesser extent, Squirrelnoid, though it's a bit better, mostly cause it's design lends well to having few paint apps), it's just clear that they do not care about quality. They are easily the most paint-free figures of their size on any peg in the stores selling them. They are riding on the license because they know fans will buy it, even when a lot of these figures are straying dangerously close to looking more like poor bootlegs than official products. There is a limit to how much you can sacrifice on quality and get away with it... the line has been crossed for me. Just look at this figure guys... look at how great it is. Especially when you consider when it was made and for who (100% kids at that time, few if any adult fans like now). The new Mutagen Man figure is an insult to its legacy.

From what I'm guessing, he'll probably have the same quality as the Squirrelenoid or Snakeweed. Reason why I say that, is because you can already see what future figures will look like based on the back part of the earlier figures' boxart. With Mutagen Man, I could already tell that he was going to be this bland from the same older box art, the organs looking like a shapeless blob with no paint.

Seriously, playmates? Seriously? I've loved the line and I don't even mind the fact that the articulation is okay. But this is terrible, Mutagen Man looks like something out of a doller store. Squrrielanoid looks pretty cool, but Mutagen Man is just sad. Playmates better get their act together. Although I don't think one bad figure will hurt sales, but I don't see Mutagen Man as a big seller. Still, I'll be sticking around and I'll probably buy Mutagen Man just becuase I'm trying to get all the figures.

Mutagen a Man is a bit lame, but I got him anyway.
The inners are all one color, blue. The garbage bin body isn't up to much, and the non articulated fat yellow limbs are a bit meh! I might just keep him in his packaging, and on the wall. This pails by comparison to the fantastic classic version ( one of my fave figures ). Casey jones isn't all that either, and I can't believe the Kirby Bat is an actual playmates figure. I haven't had a chance to get the squirrel yet, but I must say that this batch is the weakest to come out from playmates in a very long time. Last weeks Dojo Turtles were quite stunning, then, these... Anyway, I guess if I hadn't bought em, I would be chasing them down in a couple of years |

*gets on soap box*
All this stuff about Mutagen Man has me worried for how Slash, Karai, and any other characters from the show will turn out in future releases. As cool as Rahzar looks in some photos, I'll bet he won't be as good as he could be. He already has that 'dynamic' foot pose thing going. The Kirby Bat is one of the biggest 'Why?' figures in my mind. Why not make Pigeon Pete if we're going to grasp at minor characters? I look again to the vintage toyline and think now that again, when Playmates originally did new figures they at least put effort in. Even on the characters that never appeared in the show. Sandstorm, Scratch, Hot Spot, Ace Duck (not counting brief appearance on a TV screen as a full appearance)... The sculpting was top notch and there was just so many little details all over the figures like squished bugs on shoes, animals dangling on the bodies, etc, etc... I know that as mentioned in a post before, the new line is going for cartoon accuracy, and I'd be fine with that. If Playmates put EFFORT in, which they seem to be not doing as much now. The problem is they seem to want to keep the costs of the figures down as much as possible and keep the figures in the price range they debuted them at, but even the first wave figures were better than the newest ones have been. The first four turtles and April came with weapons on a rack, a call back to the vintage line. Now we're lucky if we get any weapons in the newer toys. Do I want to pay $20 for TMNT figures like Star Wars Black or Marvel Legends? No, but I feel given how successful the line has gotten seeing the empty shelves this Christmas they could put a bit more into the figures here. If we had to pay a bit more for figures to have better paint jobs and weapons, so be it. Heck, they make those larger gimmicky turtles like the weapon flingers or dojo flipper things...make the villains that SHOULD be bigger in that scale and call it 'MEGA Mutants' line or something. Then characters like Dogpound, Leatherhead, and Mutagen Man. Branch out like the old days! Also, make some more villain vehicles. Seriously, we only have a Foot Motorcycle and a Kraang Hover drone. *gets off soap box* (cue the 'Back in my day' old man bashing) |

To be fair, he IS an important element in the plot of Season 2 (I.E.: Getting him back to normal) and is probably going to show up again at least once more before he's reverted, so I wouldn't say that he's THAT minor of a character, at least not to Pigeon Pete's five-minutes-of-screentime level. His figure looks bleh, but I can at least see why they made him.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing a Star Wars Black-esque alternate line of TMNT figures based on the cartoon so that they're more accurate, have more paint apps, feature better articulation, etc.

If they can't give us that with the TMNTC line, we'll never get it. The basic battle shell figures are probably the closest we will get show accurate Nick turtles.

Yeah, I have them. I didn't get them in Target!!
This is the least ambitious and most diss appointing in the range so far. Casey sort of grows on you. The bat might work if repainted, same for MM. I saw some Tom & Jerry toys at McDonald today. One is Tom in a can with his arms sticking out. This McDonald figure is better than MM. I'm hoping that I will find a charm in these guys one day!!! I'll post side by side MM pics of the new and the far superior 80s classic . If I remember , I'll bring 80s MM to work tomorrow. If not, I'll bring the new dudes home. |

Yeah, but be careful... On another thread a couple people posted about ordering them for in store pickup and getting 2 Leonardos instead. Kmart isn't known for accurate online UPCs.

I forgot to bring the original 80s version of MM in today.
However, the packaging for the new MM gives reason for the lack of articulation. Not only can the body be filled with ooze, but the arms as well. The 'feature' is that you can force Ooze out of the arms creating an oozy dude!! Still looks like a McDonalds toy. Here is a close up:

Could you take a picture of the whole box?
Also...did I miss something about MM's articulation? His arms CAN move...right? |

Well I guess the oozing ability slightly upgrades it... I wonder why they skipped on the paint apps inside? Maybe the ooze interacted with the paint? Maybe I just want to hear a valid excuse? lol

Hmmm, DVD's photos show a little transparency in the limbs that wasn't apparent in the promo pics. Also the confirmed ooze launching ability helps to put this back on the buy list.
Is he great? Heck no. But I bought Spider Bytes without complaint (also helps I liked the character).
