Well it's not as terrible as I thought it would be. I don't like it, but it's still resembles Mikey at least. I think he might have too many props pointing out his personality though.

Ooof. The very concept of the design - the shades, the tattoo, the clothes - fits right in with everything else we've seen/heard about the movie: The people behind it are seriously over-thinking all of it.
I know change can be a good (and necessary) thing. However, I personally never feel "change for the hell of it" is the best way to steer a multi-million-dollar film, whether in story or visuals. The TMNT have been consistently popular for 30+ years, and for the most part, any attempt to "freshen-up" their look or style has been temporary and poorly-received. Some may argue that just proves the fanbase are a bunch of boring old farts who fear change, but one could easily counter with "Well, if it ain't broke..." It kind of reminds me of when Tim Burton was thisclose to turning Superman into an abomination of a film, one of the biggest "Must-Have" changes the studio insisted on was a complete overhaul of the costume, abandoning the cape (because producer Jon Peters said the cape made Superman look "Like a f*g" - just remember, THIS is generally how the people who make the Really Big Decisions about movies think) and emphasizing lots of black pleather and an S-shield that turned into twin blades (because Superman's a ninja or something). Even star Nic Cage hated the idea, and was quoted in an interview with Cinescape during pre-production, "I like the shape of the Coca-Cola bottle... I think they should stay true to the Superman costume." The studio went ahead with their idea anyway, and in April 1998 Cage had a screen test wearing a costume one of the crew members described as "A cross between Edward Scissorhands and Superman... ugly beyond belief... a human nightmare." Mere hours later that exact same day, after watching the screen test, the WB execs killed the entire project, after spending several years and somewhere around $50-100 million to that point (depending on who you ask). And thank God. But man... it sure would'a been DIFFERENT, huh? I mean, who needs boring old cape-and-spandex Superman when you can have black vinyl and see-through skin (another change Burton had promised)? The moral of the story is, when you approach a project like this with the mindset of, "We're literally going to try and be as different as possible from every single version that has ever been done before," you are absolutely going to fix it until it's broke. And why is it "bad" to want to see the familiar? Here's my thing with movies based on other media: I don't want a "reimagining", or any of that. I want something "Iconic" that captures everything the franchise is about in one sitting. It's simple: People like what they know, and the audience that sees a movie is 100x larger than the audience for a cartoon or comic book. Ideally, these movies should just be "blowing up" the source material for presentation to a larger audience. There's exceptions. The Dark Knight movies were good - despite the HORRIBLE Batman costume that got worse with every movie - but they worked because the tone was so right-on they could get away with most everything else. That said, as good as Ledger's Joker was, Begins is still my favorite of the trilogy, for the simple reason of, it's 99.9% from the comics and fits in perfectly, contradicting almost nothing, and with each film the franchise became more and more its own thing (and arguably, not in a good way). It's not rocket science. You're designing a product for a pre-existing fanbase, based on a long-running mythology with proven appeal. The hard work has already been done for you; plot, character designs, etc. have all long since been done by someone else. If you're adapting a comic, you technically already have storyboards. You're spending a ton of money, you NEED to make three times that amount (at least) to justify the project's existence, which in turn means you can't afford to do even one little thing to risk alienating the passionate, loyal, and yes, nitpicky fans. Which means, if you're smart, you don't change much, if anything. But these studios in more recent times seem to forget there's a built-in fanbase at all, and seem to design everything around hooking new fans. Where's the logic in that, catering to potential new fans while potentially alienating existing ones? Loyal, long-term fans, if pleased, will buy multiple tickets, drag their friends along, and buy the DVD. Someone sampling the product for the very first time may not be so invested in it. In fact, if they dislike it, whether it be the plot or the costumes or whatever, they might not even bother getting into any other part of the franchise, because that first taste was so displeasing. And it doesn't matter if you try and persuade them "the movie isn't like the comics/cartoons/etc.", you've already lost them. "Safe and boring" is always better with this kind of thing, if for no other reason than maximizing ticket sales and word of mouth. This entire movie, from the ground up, seems too much like someone's idea to "fix" Ninja Turtles. As if it needed it. And if it did, giving Mikey a tattoo, sunglasses and sweatpants so as to be "fresh" and "hip" probably isn't the right way to do it. It's a passable idea for a variant action figure, not for the "official" look the mainstream audience will associate with TMNT for the next 5-10 years. It's more like the costume designs for "Batman and Robin": a lame attempt at being "hip" that descends into mocking self-parody. And for the same reasons, too: More toys. Because don't kid yourself; at the end of the day, that is the ONLY reason they'd change the look of the Turtles for the movie at all, because the "classic" look has been done to death in plastic. Granted, it could be worse. That's the thing, though... the absolute best anyone can say about any of what we know about this movie, from plot to visuals is, "At least it's different", and, "It could be worse." Well things don't need to be different "just because", and lots of things in life could be worse. That's still a pretty mediocre endorsement. I've had to skip a lot of movies the past few years because money just isn't there like it was. I can only splurge on a night out when I already know I'll like the movie. I know I'll be seeing Godzilla within the first few days it comes out... but sadly, TMNT looks like yet another "wait for the DVD" movie. Which doesn't mean I won't see it, or even like it, eventually. But I've officially seen nothing that makes me want to run out and buy a ticket, not even to laugh at it. And that's a shame. I was actually way more on board when we knew absolutely nothing. |

Looks like the Image was taken down from the TMNT site, But still available in other sites. But it pretty much confirms that its from the movie.

I would say "vote with your dollars! don't see this... thing" but even if every active Turtle fan on the internet didn't see it, it'll still probably be a big hit by the real audience they're going for.

Which sucks because it means he won't post the other costumes. I hoping to finally getting a look at what Donnie and Raph were going to look like.

Considering that outfit looks exactly like the toy description breakdown we got a while ago, it's pretty easy to imagine Don, Leo, and Raph.

BLEH. They should have posted all of the Turtles costumes. I knew if they waited to put the rest up, they would have gotten a cease and desist

Funny how people are finding justification of why it needs to look like this, but then again this is a forum, I just feel , less is more.

Or doing some grocery shopping. Or cleaning your house. Or reorganizing your room. Or pretty much anything that doesn't involve watching that in the theatre.
