Why cast actual actors for roles in the live action films ?

I never understood. A good actor/actress can funicular his/her voice and has a wide range but when casting actors to play the turtles the ONLY reason you need them is their voice. Why aren't voice actors cast in these roles? If they needed them for their movement they wouldn't have body doubles with martial arts skills ect.

Mikey and Raph are there to draw Twiglight and Hunger games fandom, the other two never had a major rolle in anything i think that Pete acted in only one thing before this so i don't get it, it's bizzare...

your guess is as good as ours

especially since 2 characters already where "recast" in the voice department

i know some will argue its to get big names attached to the turtles, but the actors cast to physically play the turtles i dont really consider big names

Let's be real. Dubbing in a studio is not the same as the voice of an actor present in a scene. It just doesn't sound the same. So, I disagree with this thread's premise. See: the dubbed version of any movie. The idea that two performers can divvy up one character, and do just as well as one actor could is just silly to me.

My guess is that they really wanted one actor to do both body and voice. They wanted the turtles to have a cohesive and authentic personality, and that meant having them be portrayed by a single actor, and not two. I have to think there here must have been a serious problem with Woodburn and Ploszek, or the powers that be had a total change of heart about what they wanted from these characters, in order to let that go...

I believe the first 3 live action movies were dubbed in studio rather than live during shooting, but they turn out great.

Also I remember in one of the scenes in TMNT 3, Raph's mouth didn't open when talking but his speech can be heard.

That was probably because the suits in TMNT 3 were much lower quality than the Henson suits and also nobody really gave a **** with that movie.

I think the intention was to bring something new to the table and have actors be the turtles in both body in voice. probably done because of the success of other movies like plant of the apes and the amazing spiderman where actors got to play the creatures.it was a good idea in theory but I think they would've saved themselves a lot of money and headaches if they would of just mocapped stuntman and hired voice actors

One of the things I do like about the previous live action movies is that the turtles are the costumes, they aren't defined by any actor like Batman, Superman or even Hellboy. Their voices are distinct, but their appearance is solely the costume.

Saves money.

They hire virtual unknowns to show up on set and then hire a name actor (Tony Shaloub, Johnny Knoxville) to do the voice for cheaper.

This is not the only reason. I mean come on lol.. Its so obvious why these actors were picked. They also picked these actors bc of their physical characteristics. Not just their "voices". If Paramount and or PD didn't think it was a good voice match after everything was mixed in then they recast for voice work. But when you look at these actors you can tell which is which. I mean cant you see why? Look

Mikey: short and funny looking, voice= spot on
Leo: Stoic, medium build, correct facial structure
Donnie: lol well.. look at the guy. Tall lanky and geeky looking. Voice: most likely spot on. A perfect fit for what they wanted.

I mean come on.. you cant see Donnie in this?

Pete definitely looks like a Leo to me...

Noel is perfect for Mickey

For Raph.. the big bad ripped pissed off turtle in red? I'd say Alan was a great choice.

Could they have found others that could have worked better? I'm sure you could say that about ANY movie. There's more than one reason to cast an actor for a live action role. In this film its obvious. The same reason why you'd cast an actor for any movie. Its what they bring to the character. Physical and emotional traits. Now these turtles will look and feel more individualized.

There is more than one live action film ya know

I said filmS See the S makes it plural. As in more than one. Any turtles live action film at all, why not just use voice actors, that's the only reason you need them. And you are using body doubles anyway for the martial arts and action scenes so it makes no sense. All you need it a voice. Any of the body movement the regular actors are doing it can't be too hard for a good voice actor to do.

As someone else in here said, I do prefer the suits as well, look better, give it a good feel. The turtles are the suits themselves not the actors. The turtles should always be their own entity not the person behind the Voice/Mask.

Now that you mention it, I can see a lot of Leo in his face:

And a lot of Donnie in his (mostly with the eyes):

And a lot of Whoopi Goldberg in Michaelangelo:

Okay, that last one was a joke, but I do see Noel in there, too. Actually I think Donnie is probably the biggest departure from the actor, but we haven't seen too much of Donnie's expressions yet either.

I see Fisher's lips on Mikey, but the other turtles are a lot more subtle.

I know what plural means but thanks for the definition.. lol smh.. I referenced this TMNT film bc this is a TMNT film sub forum. Get it? Plus this explanation goes for all mo-cap live action films. Their intention was to kill two birds with one stone.. but it didn't work out with Leo and Splinter unfortunately. It does make sense. The same way an actor plays a role in any movie now they can play any creature they want and have that creature show the actors physical traits as well as their voice. We live in a different time then back in 1990. Things have changed in the last 24 years. Like I said the mo-cap will allow these turtles to be more individualized. That's one thing that makes the new cartoon so great. Could they find stunt men that look like Donnie and Raph and Mikey and Leo the way that these actors do? Ill leave that for you to answer. I understand that you like the old suits. That's fine. I do to. But that's not what they used so.. If Laird didn't decide to sell the franchise while having a green lighted project with a secure budget you would have gotten your suits and your Japanese shredder. It is what it is.

I see his nose and eyes, too. Actually if you just focus on the separate features like nostrils, eyes, and lips, you will see they all match the actors. Just the proportions are different.

And me personally I think that's cool. If you can find an actor that has a certain physical trait and the right voice for the creature you want to create then mo-cap is the perfect way to go imo. I think your going to see a lot more of this in movies now. The tech is going to advance more and more and the CGI is going to look better and better until your unable to tell what is CGI and what isn't. I love the old suits for sure. Its just my preference of having the turtles look more individualized for a modern movie. I mean you could definitely tell who was who in the old movies with their voices and head bands. Even the faces were different.. A LITTLE.. But now they can really characterize them even more and I appreciate that.
