I could see them trying to fit into this strange world... Its something that no iteration really got into.. in depth anyway. I want to see this.. I want to understand the turtles more. If this is done right we could be in for something truly epic

A concept where these characters are trying to understand themselves and the world above them I find very intriguing. Remember Mikey saying.. " you think if we save enough people we'll be excepted?" They want to fit in. This along with a rich back story/mythology sounds really interesting and entertaining. This is a new iteration. Its a new movie. Something a little different and I find it refreshing. We've all discussed this multiple times in almost every thread so.. What it all comes down to is different people like different things. There is nothing practical about teenage mutated turtle ninjas lol.. nothing at all
despite the fact that I disagree the turtles would ever have the same need to individualize themselves that normal human teenagers do I could live with that concept if it wasn't taken to these extremes. I don't mind the little details like leos arm guards and shoulder pads raphs over the head bandana or mikeys sneakers. its all the stuff that looks like it would hinder them from being stealthy and slow them down that really bothers me. its like no one took into consideration that these guys need to be agile swift and silent.

This is HOLLYWOOD we're talkin' about here. Making a movie for kids for the purpose of making money and selling merchandise. Going into depth and really exploring their personalities isn't likely on the agenda. Don't develop the characters, just put them in a costume that visually makes it blatantly obvious what their personality is.

Again, I'm making this statement as a general attack on Hollywood, not even specific to the turtles in this movie.
to add to that how many bay or liebsman movies have been known to go in depth on character emotions and feelings. at best you get about four or five lines of dialogue on the subject before its overshadowed by the next action setpiece

Um.... it's also how Bebop and Rocksteady ALWAYS looked since day one... It would be stupid if they did the reverse... just make Bebop and Rocksteady fight in casual tees and jeans. It's a matter of how the characters are supposed to generally look and act.

Nolan's Joker as serious as he was... still wore purple. They didn't make him wear a yellow tux or something. The TMNT were always wearing headbands and elbow/knee pads and such, and for whatever reason it worked. So leave it at that. Where were all these idiots back when the movies came out in the 90's arguing that their straps and things didn't work and the movies sucked because they weren't wearing a bunch of uneccesary gear?

Coola, that has kind of surprised me. A lot of arguments supporting these argue how much sense it makes, how "right" it is, etc. but there weren't calls for it prior to these, so I'm a bit amused to think "if it was so right and appropriate, why wasn't there a big demand for it for 30 years?"

C'est la vie, I suppose.

Give these designs a chance.

I think this is a first fresh start on its new movie.

But see...the IDW Turtles (now) have distinct looks that still hold very true to their classic look. Both Ross and Santolouco seem to add unique touches to each Turtle yet keep the uniform.

Heck, even Next Mutation was fairly uniform, aside from the headbands, which were most likely unique because Power Rangers.

I can still give the film a chance without liking the designs.

Hell, to be honest, I could walk out LOVING the movie and still HATE the designs, believe it or not!

I actually don't mind the designs but I agree with this! The turtles looked like ass in TMNT 3 but about five minutes into it, you get use to it and you are more invested in the "story". These new designs look like they fit in with the overall look and tone of the new movie. Even if they may be a little too human/ too over the top/ too Shrek like/ ugly/ etc. As long as they don't distract from the story and emotions of the film, I think you can still enjoy the movie while not being pleased with the designs of the characters.

Well I read every reply. Some still felt the need to repeat what I had already stated, that I know Bebop and Rocksteady were humans first. Maybe they were a bad example but my point was having clothing is not weird.

Like some have said it makes sense and mostly fits with their personality. I guess a better question would have been what would you have picked as clothing? Its really not that over the top. Just basic cover-up and Leo's warrior wear. Glasses excluded...I already know (and whatever Don's machine is for).

Also asking why people didn't complain about the 90s live action turtles not having clothes...its just a different interpretation. Theres nothing wrong with the original designs...but theres also nothing wrong with having clothes of some kind.

The bottom line is hardcore fans and "casuals" will adapt to it and either hate love or just like it. It is what it is but I don't think it's so big of a change to distract ppl from the story (which is a good thing).

I mean I still don't like the nick series designs at all. However it is probably the best thing for the franchise since Fred wolf series. And I absolutely love it, but hate the design, the show is so good I forget how much I hate their look.

Well I tend to think that the classic look has served the franchise well for 30 years and what are the odds you'd hit on another design that has anywhere near the same broad appeal? (That's why people are more open to fan-made redesigns as opposed to ones used in something like a major Hollywood movie were the whole world has to watch it for 90+ minutes)

Also it's not necessarily the fact that they have clothes - it's the specific clothes they chose. The maquettes were seen as good even though it did give them clothes it wasn't so over-the-top. I don't know whether it was a mandate from the higher ups that they needed "more stuff" but the finished designs are very overblown and not really aesthetically pleasing - or at least not to me.

Perhaps the designer (if he's reading) can take some solace that the worst part of the designs is something he was likely not responsible for which is those weird faces. Again this is why the maquettes were popular as they looked like the classic turtles that had been given a few tweaks. Now they just look strange to the eye.

^ You mean those statues that were first revealed? Those are not different than what they are now. Just the glasses and such aren't there. Also they're not trying to change the classic look. Its just that for the sake of the movie they wanted each one to be distinct.

In general, regardless of this movie, I can totally see each turtle wanting to wear stuff besides mask and belts if they could. Im sure Mikey would want something hip, Raph something rugged, Don something useful to him, not necessarily "nerdy", and Leo something associated with fighting.

No problem with the clothing whatsoever it's not like Donatello is going to wear all that through the entire flick but overall I think it's very creative and it makes each of the four bros distinct from one another then just having a different colored bandana

It's clearly photoshop and a crappy one at that, you can see that Donnie's legs are from the 1990 movie...

Aesthetics are based on opinion. People think it looks loud and is unnecessarily complicated on something that's been well received for 30 years. I'm not sure how that's ridiculous. They prefer not adding stuff for the sake of adding stuff.

For me, though, it's primarily Leo's bamboo chest armor that's utterly ridiculous and Mikey's shell necklace that's kinda silly.

That and why all four of them are wearing loin cloths....I just don't get the loin cloths, man! Well, Mikey I don't get the pants. Think that's dumb. I'd trade the pants and keep his loin cloth equivalent of the hoody around the waist. I kinda like that, actually...it amuses me.

I'm not looking at it up close and nitpicking the details. The layout's sweet.

Thanks for making me look closer at Donnie's leg, though. Now I can't not see the problem. Don't think that's from the 1990 movie though...looks nothing like them. Doesn't look like photos to me, just artwork.

You can call it crappy photoshop if you want, but it's better than some professional photoshop I've seen.

There are people NOW who don't like the colored masks

I don't think these are as minor as a color swap.

Though, the masks DO help. Hell, reading through the Ultimate Collections, I sometimes had to do a look back to know who was talking and in some panels there's just no way to have any clue who it is.

But again, the movie and the story are more important. I can get over hideously bad faces and horribly loud costumes in a movie, I'm sure I can overlook theirs if the movie itself turns out to impress.

Believe me, I wanna be back here in August saying I was wrong.

my issue isnt them wearing clothes...other wise id hate when raph wears a trench coat, or any variant figures from the 80's and 90's and trust me i bought them all

its all the extra unneeded crap..for the same reasons everyone else said, main one being..they are supposed to be swift and agile

you can't be swift when you have a proton pack on your back, as i've been told by my ghostbuster cosplay buds..99% cant even sit down with it on them

i can understand them not wanting to be barefoot, New York is the concrete jungle, and i am sure growing up in a sewer id want my feet covered too

as Jester brought up, Next mutation had them wear more without compromising the basic turtle look and giving each one their own look

The same goes with Fast Foward, they all had their own design without changing the basic arm/leg coverings . belt and mask look

so clothes are not the issue...i like Mikes hoodie belt thing, and Raphs wraps, as well as Leo's shoulder pads and Dons wrist cuffs...its all the extra stuff...the pants, the beads, the proton pack, the window shade, glasses are not needed

you can give them all their own style and still be subtle

To each their own.

I didn't like the overly complicated for the sake of complicated Transformers either, but I know some think they look cool.

Same here. I'm fine giving them extra gear, but I think they've been made overly complicated with how much.
