Unpopular opinion time here, but I personally feel that a big part of Lucas' success came down to the fact that he kept company with some very good filmmakers (specifically, Coppola and Spielberg), who gave him invaluable feedback regarding Episode IV.

For anyone who's read The Secret History of Star Wars, it becomes fairly evident that a large degree of his success hinged upon the creative input of other people - in particular, his first wife.

Lucas made some impressive strides in the SFX field and the man deserves props for that, but I feel that he gets a lot of undeserved credit. Being given free creative reign and not being held back by the limitations of modern SFX definitely showed (IMO) that he's not the master storyteller that the OT would indicate.

How...is that an unpopular opinion? It's well known the prequels were bad because no one was around to tell Lucas his ideas were sh*tty.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that opinion is unpopular at all...I'd say it's a common one.

It's also what gives me hope going forward.

Well to be fair, there are a lot of people out there who like the prequels and who consider Lucas fairly talented in his own right - so I'm pretty sure they wouldn't agree with me

IF you can't wait for the movies listen to this, it's amazing and it really feels like clasic Star Wars, to bad it isn't canon anymore :/
Imagine if this guy played Thrawn.

Roger Moore was born to play Thrawn, but he's way too old now.

Now they would probaby cast Cumberbatch, i mean he's a perfect choice and would kill it but that's really unimanigative casting but then all the casting in this movie by now has been really good, they haven't cast a single Major star yet which really gives me hope...

It scares me that they're planning movies beyond the main ones. I mean, I get it. I get the approach to everything now is to hit on an annual basis and soak in as much money from something as possible before you run it into the ground, but I hate it.

Also, Gary Whitta? He's a hard guy for me to stomach. He's so jaded and cynical about everything. The one thing he has going for him is that he's a very old school Star Wars fan, so maybe he actually knows what's up in this case. Typically he doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

I'm more than a little nervous about the upcoming flood of annual Star Wars movies, myself, but I get it. The audience is obviously there for it, and movies are becoming bigger business every day. Even the most obscure characters and franchises are getting the big screen treatment, and Star Wars already has a ton of material just waiting to be mined for future films.

Basically, nature is balance, and since there is no justice in a world where Ant-Man gets a solo movie and Boba Fett does not, it makes perfect sense that they're going to try and "expand" their film universe past the core series. Hopefully they don't blow their load too early, burn through all the characters people actually *want* to get their own film, and end up having to do a frickin' Ewoks movie or something. I mean, we know eventually it'll come to that, or "Adventures of C-3PO" or something, but hopefully, they don't hit the bottom of that well for a long, long time.

Wasn't the first solo film supposed to be about Yoda? That's what I remember hearing anyway.

Probably. There's a lot you can do with that. I'd be on board with that. Guy's several hundreds of years old, and we've only seen a few glimpses out of one 30 or so year stretch of his life. One can imagine the kind of stuff they could mine for a movie about him. As long as they resisted the standard Star Wars temptation to thrown in a million little winks and nudges to everything else SW related. A big problem the prequels had was that they felt like they needed to foreshadow or reference every single thing that happened in the other movies, and you don't need to do that.

No, they've never said what the first film will be. Rumors for it have been Boba Fett, Han Solo or Yoda.

Well Disney see's Star Wars as their new Marvel that can have at least a movie a year with an "event" (avengers) movie being the Episodes every couple of years. I'm perfectly fine with this format, the Star Wars universe is full of possibilities for stories and many more than the Marvel Universe has. You also don't have to fall in one genre unlike the superhero movies. I'm sure many of the single films will become franchises, a Boba Fett or Darth Vader solo movie is sure to become a franchise on their own. My only fear is that Disney said they wanted "an episode" every 2 years, I think the 3 year wait made each episode special, and it definitely would now with a movie a year. This is especially true if Disney plans on making episodes X+ which seems very likely.

Both have already happened, and while "bad" they were a product of its time and they have their charming moments.

Here's hoping that they don't decide to try doing any more Xmas Specials.
