Yeah, I don't really get that either.

Guardians of the Galaxy = Good Trailers & Promotion. Good Trailers = Wanting To See the Film.

TMNT = Bad Trailers/Promotion. Bad Trailers/Promotion = Not Wanting To See the Film.

Guardians of the Galaxy...showcased Lots of Action, Fight Scenes, Title Characters as Bona-Fide Leads with Personalities, Sense of Humor, Excitement.

TMNT...showcased lots of Action? Not really. Fight Scenes? None. Title Characters as Bona-Fide Leads with Personalities? Not at All. Sense of Humor? One Mikey joke which I personally didn't find that funny. Excitement? Not in the slightest.

Guardians of the Galaxy Trailers: Already gave the audience a sense of each character, who they are, and how they will be handled, from the lead to Rocket Raccoon.

TMNT Trailers: Not so much. At All.

And TMNT has had Three Things So Far (Two Trailers & a TV Spot).

Guardians? Only Two Trailers and they got all of that done, which TMNT Has Not.

I can't imagine Guardians of the Galaxy be at number 1 for the 2nd week in the US as it looks like Maleficent will take the number 1 spot from X-Men in the US (don't no about the UK as Edge of Tomorrow came out at the same time as Maleficent).

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansit...news/?a=101057

Not many Marvel films have spent longer than 1 week at the top of the box Office chart.

The more I think about it I can't help but want to see gaurdians win this "fight". From what I see it looks like everything I want to see more of from hollywood. A risky unknown I.p. hoping to appeal to audiences because of a strong story and interesting characters.

I was about to bring this up. After seeing this decline for X-Men: Days of Future Past, it's clear that not all superhero films are guaranteed to #1 in their second weekends. Days of Future Past received very good reviews too.

Paramount was also smart to move Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from June 6 to August 8 because Edge of Tomorrow, which opens the same weekend that this movie was going to debut is not tracking very well. It was also smart to avoid competition from this films listed below.

Quote:
Moviegoers right now are focused more on upcoming titles “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Transformers: Age of Extinction” and “Maleficent,” according to Phil Contrino, chief analyst at BoxOffice.com.
http://variety.com/2014/film/news/wa...es-1201183917/

How to Train Your Dragon 2 also opens in a few weeks, so had TMNT opened in June, it would have to compete for family audiences with that film.

It should be noted that the Guardians trailers are way longer than TMNT's. And, of course, they've had two. But the action ratios are pretty much the same...

Some suspect that it's the CGI that has been holding back TMNT footage. I think re-releasing the same trailer with a few seconds of turtle footage supports that theory. You have to imagine Guardians has all the resources in the world at their disposal, and we know TMNT has had budget cuts.

I pity the fool who goes up against How to Train Your Dragon. I bet it'll be one of the year's top earners.

I say GOG has the upper hand this August, unless tmnt shows more previews, trailers, promotions, anything that encourages people to see the movie, this movie has the possibility of being an office box bomb. I'm trying not to be negative, but the advertising is absolutely terrible

Box Office Mojo said today that even superhero films with great reviews and strong word-of-mouth can still have steep drops.

Quote:
In second place, X-Men: Days of Future Past plummeted 64 percent to $32.6 million. That drop is on par with last year's Fast & Furious 6, and is a slight improvement over X-Men: The Last Stand. Still, it's a bit steeper than expected given the movie's strong word-of-mouth and reviews. To date, its earned $162.1 million, and is now on track for a final total between $220 and $230 million.
http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3851&p=.htm

So, we'll see if the same thing happens with Guardians of the Galaxy.

I think it's funny they concentrate on the domestic box office drop as opposed to the fact that DOFP became the highest grossing X film ever in just 10 days.

I was at Target today, and I was genuinely surprised by how many TMNT things I saw. Like, I was blown away. I've seen turtle things all around ... but not like this. Not this quantity (at least at this location).

TMNT 1987 little kid swimsuits, TMNT 1987 little kid shirt, TMNT 1987 iPhone cases, TMNT 1987 boxers (with a cape! [Yes, a cape velcroed onto the boxers!!]), and what surprised me most of all, is a plain white t-shirt, with Raph doing his signature jump from the Mirage comics (Raph micro, I believe), including the traditional TMNT Mirage logo (had to buy that one), etc. And that's just things I haven't seen before.

What I'm trying to come down to is that there is a lot more TMNT merchandise (that I'm seeing) then there was a month or two ago. This is potentially because they're doing this to bank off the new movie, to get more nostalgia flowing through the air (well, go figure). I was actually surprised about how much I was seeing around, which I really wasn't a month ago (there was still a lot, but...).

Bottom Line: Maybe Viacom is getting people pumped for the movie and reintroduced to the concept of the turtles in other ways than just showing off new things in the movie. As in, reintroducing childhood memories, reintroducing the nostalgia, to get people excited for the movie once they dive I to marketing. Maybe I'm looking too much into it, but I was genuinely surprised by the influx of content.

(This post is a little off topic, but that's because I wasn't exactly sure where to put it. This thread has sort of become a marketing discussion thread, so I put it here. However, someone really should open a marketing thread.)

EDIT: (Actually, we have trailer discussion threads, image threads, interview threads, and many other threads that have to do with marketing, so it really isn't needed, I guess.)

I agree man.. the TMNT brand is a force to be reckoned with.. so even though you could never really predict if a movie will perform well or not, nostalgia alone is a powerful thing lol.

I was watching one of my favorite Youtube shows the Black nerd and he put it perfectly.
If GOTG can do something this "out there" and sell these characters and succeed in making this movie a successful hit. That they pretty much have earned the right to legally print money

I haven't been to Target lately. But it is normal to see a resurgence of of "classic" merchandise leading up to a new release. I walked into a Hot Topic a about a month ago, and they had tons of 90's X-Men stuff. And I bought a shirt with an old-style Godzilla on it. And, by the time TMNT comes out, you'll probably see some oldschool Annie stuff around.

How much of that is simply the retailer's decision, I don't know...

Oh, I think TMNT will be number one in it's opening weekend, but then GOTG will back to number one in it's third weekend. I am also calculating that GOTG will open 20 million higher than TMNT. (I think Guardians will open at around 50 million and TMNT will open around 30 million)

Right now I'm seeing something similar to the 2007 movie playing out. It had similar promotion, its own standalone storyline, and hopes for sequels. Lukewarm is my expectations at this moment since there was some talk about nostalgic merchandise returning leading up to the 2007 movie, though there wasn't as much at the time. I'd currently say the X factor for TMNT's success are the critics reviews that get released in the immediate pre-release period. Even if Guardians of the Galaxy gets great reviews and a great opening weekend doesn't mean there isn't room for TMNT since moviegoers can see GoTG one weekend and TMNT the next; let's not forget about DVD promotion in which a release around the Christmas holidays could provide additional support, especially with bonus features. I'd say as long as the reviews are satisfactory, us fans will then dictate the success; if we can sell ourselves to others and show why its good, this film will have legs. If not, it will quickly be forgotten as a new school year dawns. But overall TMNT 14 is a clear underdog as it looks to be right now.

Between the record breaking trailer views, nostalgia, and Bay's involvement not to mention the relentless build up to this film I think it will most likely do well at the box office and make the big bucks.

and I love this little bit posted in another thread

Quote:
There’s already a lot of buzz surrounding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s the 8th ranked film on IMDB’s MovieMeter, which means it’s a highly searched term this week, a full four months before it’s due to be released.

Originally a comic book, the ninja turtles were first adapted for screen in 1990. That first film was a commercial success, spawning sequels in 1991 and 1993. Another film for the franchise didn’t follow until 2007, and unlike the previous films, was completely computer generated. Given its low production budget — just $34 million — the film didn’t exactly ‘bomb,’ but it barely ranked in the top 50 films that year, a far cry from a blockbuster. With the king of blockbusters, Michael Bay, behind the upcoming film, it’s fair to say expectations for the reboot are higher.

As demonstrated in 2007, there will always be an audience for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Fortunately, young men in their teens and twenties are the biggest theater-going demographic, and they also happen to be the generation that grew up with the ninja turtles, on film and on TV, as action figures and Halloween costumes. With the same man behind the Transformers franchise lending his expertise to the turtles reboot, and adding Megan Fox for good measure, it seems likely Paramount will have a hit on its hands come August.
Not to mention all that blue in the poll above
TMNT's gonna rock the house

I live right down the street from a Target, so it's where i go on a daily basis for my grocery and toy hunting needs. I also like to swing through the boys' clothing section to see if they have any cool extra-large shirts (I found a SICK Snake Eyes t-shirt in the boy's clothing section in a Wal-Mart) Where i'm at in the Twin Cities we've had a lot of cool TMNT out since Dec and Jan. I picked up that Raph shirt back in Feb, i don't wear white, but i cut it up and sewed it on a hoodie as a back patch

So, i don't think the surge in merchandise is a "conspiracy" of sorts by Viacom to increase nostalgia. It's really just that TMNT is HOT right now. The new show is killing it with the youngsters and And that surge of popularity has spilled over to nostalgia of the 20 and 30 somethings. The movie is just potentially reaping the benefit of that, which might turn out really well for them.

Yes, that's true. It's not only classic TMNT things in the Target that I saw, but a WHOLE BUNCH of 2012 series turtles. The TMNT are getting in the spotlight again, with or without this new movie, and they're HUGE! Viacom is trying to rake in these benefits with older fans, putting out classic stuff.

I'm not exactly saying this is some big thing that Viacom is doing, and it's definitely not a conspiracy. However, putting out a Mirage shirt (that was labeled 2014) is a sort of odd thing to put out, since the masses don't really know what that's all about. They may have just put that out there because hardcore fans will pick it up instead of familiarizing people with a more gritty take on the turtles, I don't know.

The fact that a movie is coming out may or may not have to do with the merchandise coming out (even if it does, I know it's not the only factors they're putting out these awesome clothing items), but I'm excited TMNT is become such a bigger deal again.
