I don't mind Karai mutating as long as it isn't Shredder's fault. (as long as he didn't do it on purpose)

I'll be honest: for a guy that stole a man's infant daughter and admittedly raised her just to hate/be a weapon he could use against said man later (or so he told Splinter)...I'm not expecting him to care much about mutating her if it would bother Splinter as well. He seems very short sighted and one track minded when it comes to his hatred of Splinter.

I really want to believe that raising a child as your own, no matter the reason, would be enough for him not to even consider such a thing. But this Shedder...he's short sighted, blinded by hatred, and if the foreshadowing so far is any indication, going to give Kairi a very rude wake up call.

For the record, I am really hoping he won't do it on purpose too, but I wouldn't put it past him at this point. I also hope Splinter or the turtles won't be blamed for it. That it's just a WTF accident and both sides are like, well "WTF?!" XD

Shredder would probably mutate her without any forethought. I'm not sure if he'd even consider how Tang Shen would feel were she still alive. You'd think he'd choose not to mutate Karai due to respect he might of had for her mother, but I think he's just too far gone. He probably had no love for Shen at all, come to think of it. So far, I'm seeing absolutely no redeeming qualities in this guy, but it's Shredder we're talking about. It seems as if even Karai might be cannon fodder in his war with Splinter. I'd imagine he'd do whatever he could in order to cause Splinter the most pain. Mutating Karai doesn't seem like it'd be a big deal to him at all. I think it's all a part of his vindictive nature. I'm hoping we'll see a bit more of their backstory in Kuro Kabuto.

I don't think Shredder loved Shen at all and probably just considered her as a prize to be won from Splinter. I also don't think he cares about Karai as another poster said because of the lack of an answer in "Follow the Leader" when Karai asked if Shredder wouldn't really hurt her. Also when she asked if even she would be punished for disobeying him and he said, "Especially my daughter." So that pretty much tells you he doesn't care about her anymore and really just wants her as a pawn. He'd mutate her in a heartbeat and wouldn't care what happened after that.

to all 3 posters above

I just don't see it that way.....I think Shredder has become fond of Karai.

pure evil villains are kinda boring...seeing some sort of conflict would be nice.

but...we'll see next episode.

I really hope Shredder is more fatherly deep inside, and he is just keeping a cold facade as the Clan Boss. He did save her when believing Yoshi was dead, there would be no intention to raiser as "evil" if there was no Yoshi to rub it in on.

I think he saved Karai, because it was the last thing he'd have after Shen, and he couldn't let a infant child burn to death.

In the animal kingdom the children sired by a previous dominant male is killed or driven out by the new dominant male.

The same is true for some humans, where the new husband or wife doesn't want anything to do with their predecessors off spring.

When Shredder picked up Karai I think he suspected that Hamato Yoshi would still be alive after the fire. And she was the only remaining part of Teng Shen that existed so he felt he could raise her and possibly love her as his own. But in this he also felt he could train her to be a weapon against Hamato Yoshi in the future.

Unfortunately as Karai grew up, he began to see less off Teng Shen and more Hamato Yoshi in her features. So he began to hate her too, because all he would see every time he saw her was the man who stole the woman he believe he loved.

He wouldn't destroy her out right, because she is still part of Teng Shen. But he will let her suffer for being the daughter of Hamato Yoshi.

I hope so and I agree, purely evil villains are boring. It would be a nice thing to explore her knowing that Splinter is her biological father, but considering Shredder as her 'real' father since he raised her.

I think that could eventually be why Splinter might not want Leo to come get her, as he wants her to decide on her own about who her 'real' father is. That would be a mature and adult reasoning to have about one's kid, knowing that you can't force someone to accept you just because they are blood related to you.

VA, that's a very insightful post for sure. I can see that happening.

And MW, Splinter does want Karai to decide for herself, and I think that's also why Splinter doesn't want Leo to get her.

Agreed - bad for the sake of bad is lazy writing, IMO. The best villains always have a motivation which you can at least understand, if not relate to, at their core.

That's why I've always really enjoyed the Saki/Yoshi/Shen love triangle - I feel that it gives more depth to Shredder as a character.

Ultimately I think that Shredder considers Karai a pawn, but I can't imagine that he could possibly spend 15 years raising her and not have some kind of affection for her, deep down. She is the daughter of the man he hates, but also the daughter of the woman he loved - there's definitely grounds for conflict there but he has to have some kind of feeling for her.

Totally agree. I don't think he was ever right in the head in this series. I think he just sees her as something to torture Splinter with. I'd love to be wrong, though.

Yeah, this is how I'm seeing him, and Follow the Leader really gave me that impression. I'm under the impression that he didn't really love Shen either. I just feel that he's literally nuts and unstable or either a selfish prick. At least in Mirage I could see where he was coming from and kinda felt bad for him. His reasons for killing Yoshi were misguided, but he did so to avenge his prick of a brother, who he looked up to.

He is very short-sighted in this series. I can't say much regarding Utrom Shredder, but at least OT Shredder had a legit reason to go after Splinter...sorta in the beginning. He didn't want Yoshi to maybe clear his name. Well, that was always my impression anyway before getting super power hungry and wanting to rule the world like a cliche villain.

I think that maybe at one point he did try to be fatherly to Karai but fully couldn't because he still saw her as Hamato Yoshi's daughter. Maybe he felt a little something, but after finding out that Yoshi was still alive the resentment started to surface.

Here's a probability. Maybe Teng Shen was betrothed to Oroku Saki as a child, be it a uniting of clans or one of those child promise weddings. And she was friends with both Oroku Saki and Hamato Yoshi. However she realized she loved Hamato Yoshi more and married him. But Saki took offence to it and felt Teng Shin was his by right.

^ That would honestly make more sense than just wanting to kill Hamato Yoshi just because he stole a lady who he was only passionate about, but had no intimate relationship or commitment involved with her.

If it was a betrothal then that would make more sense. Of course it would mean that she betrayed her clan by getting with Yoshi.

If if was a child promise wedding, then that would been like one of those situations where two children promise they would marry when they are old enough to legally get married. But as things change when they get older, one of them falls in love with another man while the person she was originally promised to feels like he is wronged.

My official head canon for Saki/Shen/Yoshi now, lol.

Better than him being delusional about their supposed relationship. (Or lack there of.)
