Taking all that into consideration the formula for "Mania" has changed and the Turtles are the most popular things going for kids right now. I don't think anything in recent years has had this kind of appeal for kids, not Mickey, not Spider-Man, not Spongebob, not even Batman.

making him slightly more accurate. though the 'NYC' is crappily painted..as for metalhead2.0's comment about turtlemania, hell. i'm feeling it. i've been turtle crazy for the last two weeks, been buying figures left and right that i needed in my collection. and with my chick its great to get turtlecrazy with someone who shares the same passion for turtles. its wonderful. s0 yea. there is a turtlemaina. my nephew asked me for turtles for his birthday this september.

I just got my blimp yesterday. It is massive! I am just using it as a display piece, so I have not tried out any of the gimmicks. It sure beats paying so much money for a vintage one. This makes me excited for the upcoming Party Wagon and Pizza Thrower. Now all we need is a new Technodrome and a new Mutant Module and then we will have the most iconic vehicles of the OT line (IMO) in Nick toy form.

As much as I love the new blimp it isn't made nearly as well as the original. Has far to few features. Doesn't roll on the ground. No easy detachment to glider mode. I give it credit for the easy to hang tab on top of the actual blimp part. Other than that though the original is superior in every way. That is however just my opinion and doesn't/shouldn't resonate as fact.

There were aisles full of the Ben Gordy, Hope Industries watches, shirts, suction cup dolls, plushes, mirrors, Hostess pudding pies, Birthday cards, Collegeville and Ben Cooper costumes, bed sets, tents, pajamas, Random House books, bootleg shirts featuring Raphael and Michelangelo, TV references, FHE video tapes, Ralston cereal, Giant figurines, Giant Buttons, patches, garbage bins, hampers, pins, Mello Yello stickers, Farley Fruits Snakes and Eggs, Band-aids, Pasta, pencil cases, folders, portfolios, Chef Boyardee spaghetti, Cracked and Mad Magazine covers, Kazoo, Unique Birthday accessories, controversial chairs, sneakers, Thermos lunch boxes, bookbags, topps stuff, candy and Playmates action figures in 1991. You name it, they made it. The early 90s practically belonged to Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.

I agree with the merchandise, barring a few things, being there for the popularity. It just doesn't feel the same this time though. Maybe things were different in the 80's/early 90's? Maybe I am just different now? To me though the hype/popularity is just different this time around though.

People aren't buying the 2k12 stuff like they did the late 80's/ early 90's merchandise. Post a 2k12 item and something from 1990, people will go with the last one.

The 2k12 turtles are just revamps, nothing to write home to Mom about. People bought anything they could find in 1990 because the Turtles were actually original in that time.

Agreed! It's hard to turn any corner in stores without finding something TMNT related. It may not be the 80's/90's "golden era" but it's pretty d**n close!! I love TMNT as much as the next guy, but I see lots of things now that I just have to shake my head at. It's definitely flooding the market.

I don't see anyone losing sleep over any TMNT 2k12 product in stores right now. There aren't long lines formed outside of the Toys"r"us for a Leonardo or Donatello action figure. At the price of 8.99, I don't see any of the collectibles on reserve for a boy or girl. When is the "Coming Out of Their Shells" tour? The turtles are back, but they aren't what they were in 1990. They're only a hit with certain crowds because members of Generation Y are now parents. Children today would much rather have an iPad over a Shredder figurine anyday.

Mikey...I'm not sure what your point is here? Does it really matter if this new popularity "is" or "isn't" as big as the 80's/90's? You are probably right about the fact that nothing may compare to the original as far as how big it actually was, but the fact is that today we are experiencing turtle-mania. It is all over the place, and like others stated before.... for every type of item that was available during the original's run, there's probably an equivelant to it today (be it clothes, cups, toys, food, etc, etc, etc). The fact is that today is a good time to be a turtles fan.

And for the record, it's not just about old-school fans being nostalgic over something from their youth. The fact is, KIDS of today are eating this stuff up. There's a reason why every time I go to a toy aisle in Target or Walmart there is a little one buying turtles items. In fact, I have a 5 year old and a 2 year old and both are crazy over the turtles!! Some of the first words out of my 2 year old's mouth was Leo, Donnie, Raph, Mikey, April, and Shredder. He of course picked it up from the 5 year old. They both have tons of new TMNT toys, as well as some vintage toys I've picked up for them. They have TMNT pillows, blankets, dreamlites, pajamas, etc, etc. They love the turtles.

They watch the Nick show every week. I've also shown them episodes of the classics toon and the 2k3 show. The 5 year old initially didn't realize that the turtles existed until he started watching the Nick show, but now he knows the difference between all the shows and movies.

I don't know what the numbers are as far as merchandising sold during the heyday of the 80's and 90's versus today, but the fact is Viacom is making tons and tons of money off of all this new merchandising. If it doesn't match or surpass the original in terms of $$ made, I'd be willing to bet it's pretty darn close. And it's not showing any signs of dwindling anytime soon...in fact I'd bet that we have a few more years to go before it dies down (be it cartoons, live action movies, comic books, toys, or what have you).

Nothing's better than the original. The equivalents (they're just that) are only in stores this time around because the first ones sold better. This "turtle-mania"(okay…) cannot touch the Turtlemania of 1990.
