Initial thought:
Shredder's convincing switch was a nice twist.

I was expecting an alliance not Shredder realizing this is a three way war between Krang, the turtles, and himself.

Bludgeon does this mean no Armaggon?

Otherwise, great issue that did not require the turtles in their own issue. Such a great supporting cast that can carry weight and has such potential only so many realize. Great call, Mr. Waltz!

Btw, who was that who gave this place a shout out?

Why doesn't the title of the thread have "Spoilers" in it so I can read this without having to click dozens of times?

Anyway...I think this is the first issue of IDW's series (proper, or ancillary) that doesn't feature even on one panel with the TMNT in it, and the issue is so good, you don't even really notice til the end.

Also...BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDGEON!!!!!

I kinda wish they'd just called him Armaggon and let him grow into the name as the story went on. Maybe later on Future!Bludgeon will become a supervillain in his own right and come back in time calling himself Armaggon or something. Otherwise it feels like a missed opportunity and a somewhat goofy name.

Whatever though. It's impressive to see a mainline TMNT book not even feature the title characters and still come out so great. It didn't go the way I expected, but this is probably even better. I love how we're finally getting to the point where things are unpredictable again. I loved City Fall and Northhampton but you could see the specific story beats coming months ahead.

Defending the name: two things: Bludgeon is a Hammerhead, Armaggon was modeled after a great white (I think). Second, Armaggon is a mouthful to say and a bit of an odd name to come up with a reason for (it was originally a corruption of Armageddon) while Bludgeon makes more immediate sense (Bludgeon with a hammer, get it?) and rolls off the tongue easier than a three syllable name.

As Tom said, the characters right now doesn't really have any similarities besides being 'a' shark of some kind.

That bit out of the way, rereading this, it strikes me how Shredder's men really do defend him to the death. His duplicate of course but the other guard threw himself right into the line of fire to allow him escape. I guess the helicopter pilot died trying to save him, but that wasn't the plan.

Alopex was a fox, and Koya was Shedder's pet bird originally, so they were all animals. Yet they're not as antisocial as Old Hob or as dumb as Slash was before they fixed him. Maybe the foot has the serum? Did they took it at the lab attack in #1? I can't recall how it happened.
Krang can't make mutants, shredder can. This has been established for awhile. The foot has the psychotropic compound and mutagen they stole the research from Stockgen in issue #1 and they probably ran out of ooze so Karai lifted some off of burnow island.

this issue was phenomenal. I know everyone's already said it, but I can really appreciate the fact that the issue works so well without any appearance of the titular characters.

A shark mutant was the last thing I would've guessed was coming! Also I totally thought that was really Shredder who got sucker-punched, I should have known better. IDW has done a great job of making Shredder a very nuanced character; he's got his flaws but they're not significant enough for one to disregard him as being a credible threat. he isn't so power hungry and focused on taking over the world that he's setting up his own downfall (although it got kinda close to looking like that might be the case at a couple points during the series).

I'm already curious as to what IDW's next mini-series will be about. Like somebody mentioned in this issue's Ninja Notes, I hope Angel/Nobody gets a micro issue at some point. And Woody too!

One other thing: does this issue/standalone story have a freaking name!?!?

I am sorry but the name is so cliché

They should announce something soon, to fill the gap once Turtles in Time ends.

As for micro issues, there is a growing list of characters overdue for one but I can't help but think there will be a couple of new ones introduced before the big showdown with Shredder and/or Krang, even beyond the new members of Hob's gang we know are coming. It's just a matter of time.

I believe the 37-40 arc is called "Territory".

Read it last night and man, those fight scenes got my blood pumping, what an awesome book! I liked how Krang said Shredder's name alot, like he was talking down too him, reminded me of the OT. I don't know much about Armaggon but I do know that a shark mutant is bad ass! This is one of the best issues of the series and the turtle boys weren't even in it! Bring on the next issue

How?

There's no other shark or hammer-related characters with that name, is there?

Hell I don't know of any characters period.

You guys have to stop doing this, I can't keep thinking of different ways to describe how great this book is. Just when I think I'm going to run into a throw away issue I'm proven wrong.

The writing has been top notch (Why is this book not on the top 10 of best selling monthlies?). Also Smiths art was great and kept the tone and feel of the book. It didn't feel to jarring to have a different artist step in.

I did not realize there was a different artist on this book. The art reminded me of Duncan's

Wow.

Spoiler:
IDW kicks so much ass. I mean, wow. This issue. I never wanted it to end. Shredder and Krang's meeting gave me chills. So much unexpected stuff, Krang tries to kill Shredder but Shredder was one step ahead. Then they go at it! Always wanted to see that since Im a little kid. I think this is the best showcase of Saki's skills that we have seen in this series so far, he proved that in one on one combat he can take down Krang. And even though Krang has all the guns and stuff, Shredder was still able to out maneuver him. Epic battle on a boat, and when I saw that fin in the water I nearly **** myself. I thought it was going to be Armaggon, but it's a new mutant Bludgeon. Really dig him, he looks a lot like the shark from Worms of Madness.

Anyway I just want to say thank you to the TMNT staff at IDW. This is what the movie should've been! IDW TMNT rewards it's fans!
