They needed the mutagen to "kraangform" the planet. They did not need the mutagen to take over the planet. As far as we've been told, there was nothing stopping them from conquering Earth on say, the year 2134, B.C. and using the globe as a testing lab. In fact, we've seen them try to invade without perfect mutagen--that's what the previous finale was all about. So why then and not earlier?

ETA: A possible explanation would be a variation of what the 4Kids toon did with the Utroms, and explain that the Kraang for some reason needed human technology to get to certain level before it could be used to perfect the mutagen. Unfortunately, there's nothing in the actual cartoon to support something like that.

The writers have never been consistent when it comes to the Kraang, and every detail about them has been contradicted at some point or another. Remember when they said that the problem with the mutagen was that it didn't work on Earth? The writers don't, as last episode had them somehow perfecting it while on Dimension X. Remember when April was an essential part of the entire process? Not so much, it turns out. The question you ask is an obvious one, and yet the show can't answer it, because the writers don't care.

Wait i thought they always said the mutagen didnt work the exact same way it does in Dimension X and that they were always working to tweak it. Hence why after decades of radio silence leatherhead contacted the turtles. As the Kraang finally figuring out how to make it work on earth was worth being detected.

Also i naturally assumed in the back of my head that capturing April and using her magic fairy dust or whatever was Plan A. That if they succeded in capturing her, it didn't matter if they fixed the mutagen or even invaded with a full army, they would instantly win.

With finally perfecting the Mutagen and invading with actual troops being Plan B. Hence why Irma didnt just snatch April the first time they were alone. After millennia of just... waiting for this perfect DNA person or whatever, they got complacent and expected an easy win. So once theu got thwarted once they finally decided to not continue with the same plan. Maybe it's just me but i liked that, showed the kraang at least marginally capable of planning things ahead of time.

I just kind of naturally inferred this, chalking it up to the writers not wanting to bluntly state EVERYTHING. I don't get the feel that they don't care in the slightest, i just see them naturally hobbled by having to fill out 26 episode seasons

Oh my word! This episode(s) was nothing short of a masterpiece! It was epic in every way. It had action, drama, love and a cliffhanger!

I really loved the tone of this episode, the action was brutal and not like anything we've seen from the Turtles on the screen before. Watching Leatherhead chomp on Shredder had me almost shocked! Further, I absolutely loved the references to the comic books with Leo almost being beaten to death and how they escape to Northampton. But the high point in this episode was the Mike/Raph-hug, how Mikey in such a heated situation convinces Raph that everything will be ok in the end. This sure is setting up nicely for season 3.

Speaking of season 3, I hope they don't rush the Turtles' return to NYC. I want them to spend as much time as possible at Northampton, it could really make for some great character development. I suppose we'll have lots of more references to the comic books in this season.

I've seen The Invasion 5 times already today and I still cry at the emotional scene between Mikey and Raph.

I hope Ciro and the team do more scenes like this.

That's... Interesting... It might have been unintentional but who knows...

Amazing! It really goes to show just how big a fan that Ciro and the Nick crew really are.

This was the best episode of the entire series IMO. Ciro and company always offer us hints on possible twists, but the Irma reveal still surprised me. In the Ho-Chan episode, I though the bit with Irma having a special power was a reference to the green-eyed girl in Big Trouble in Little China. Double meaning there. Anyways, I cannot wait for more episodes. I wonder what younger fans thought of this episode. I really like how Mikey is growing up and maturing. I also like the IDW reference in how Donnie and Leo went at it, rather than Leo and Raph. Some people may not like this episode and series, and that is okay. You can never please everyone. Great job Ciro and crew!

But they didn't show the shop burn down, which is really disappointing. I was expecting something similar to the 4kids episode and first movie.

They have never even mentioned the shop by name in this series. How is the shop not burning down really disappointing? Everything else was in flames. I am not trying to be mean, but if you are going to complain, make it a valid reason. This is a total nitpick.

Edit: I respect how you feel, but I want to stand up for Ciro and crew, as I feel that they get far too much flak. This is a show made for little kids, and not for adults. Thank goodness it is not like most other shows on Nick (discounting Legend of Korra). I feel that Ciro and crew have fought to keep the toilet humor and stupidity to a minimum. It is a great show IMO.

Yeah, so? I'm just saying it's cool how some of the scene from the episode are borrowed from the Leo one-shot.

The camera pans the outside of the shop showing it as, "Second Time About." I was hoping to see the classic shop burning up.

I'll give you this; it would have a been a nice homage if the shop burned down. But I am just saying that it is not a big deal, to me at least. I hope that my earlier comments did not seem mean. I just like talking turtles you know.

This episode blew me away, I never expected the events that happened!

Spoiler:
I was disappointed to see Irma is one of the Kraang. I mean I liked Shredder being an Utrom in the 4kids cartoon but seeing Irma like that made me understand why some don't like Shredder being an Utrom. I wanted Irma to be real.

Loved all the comparable events to the 4kids series! As Leonardo was injured, he crashed right through the window and now they're escaping to Northhampton. And the Earth Protection Force: does anyone think we'll see Agent Bishop? I hope he turns it into the Pan Galactic Alliance!

Does it matter? I didn't even notice the shop because it hasn't been referenced in this series. They got the stuff with Leo, though which is way more significant.

Does April and her dad even run that shop in this version? If not, then it really doesn't make sense for the Foot to waste time burning down some random building. In the comic it was because April and the Turtles were actually there and it was basically her home. I know it woulda been a homage, but in the series within itself it would look stupid, them just burning some random building down for ***** and giggles.
