Official Ep Discussion: S3 Ep5: "In Dreams"

The episodes are fine, the only problem is they're too many similar episodes close together.

The "horror episodes" from Seasons 1 and 2 were spread apart, like the Squrielnoids episode wasn't right next to Parasita, etc.

One thing I am wondering though, would people want this show to be straight serious plot? If they did all of the plot stuff right away without any of the 'filler' stuff to space it out, people might end up complaining that it's too rushed through and broody and not '80's' enough. The fillers have a purpose

So they trying not to run out of steam and saving the plot heavy stuff for later future seasons?

I guess I can understand. There is a time and place for filler but really 10 episodes and putting them smack dab between a major event? That will only make people impatient.

Stand alone episodes are okay and it helps that there is a connecting theme, but for the future they should put the stand alones' after the story arc.

Wow, I loved this episode! Literally. Seems that with every ep that's been airing this season, I've liked it more than the previous one. At the moment, if I were to rank the episodes from favorite to least favorite, it would be...

A tie between ep 4 and this one.
A Foot too Big (the Finger! Seriously, it rekindled WWF Nostalgia feels. lol)

This ep was obviously homaging Nightmare on Elm Street or parts of the ep were paying a homage to it. I've only seen the first movie, of course not originally, given my age. I didn't finally see that movie until about six or seven years ago when they were replaying it in the old theater in my town for Halloween. My friend and I decided to go see it. A young Johnny Depp...always nice to see. lol Anyway, forgot to say, I liked this homage way more than the blatant Nightmare on Elm Street homage the OT did with Creepy Eddy.

The Dreambeavers were pretty interesting. Kassir and England were great! But man, poor Dave. "Shut up Dave!" Oh, and everyone's nightmares were fun! The interesting thing about dreams is that they don't have to make any sense. Obviously, for Donnie and I guess Mikey, there wasn't a fear or personal issue going on to trigger the dream.

Leo was feeling down about his knee still giving him trouble and his dream was about that and speaking of Leo, I'm sorry, I have no prob with Seth, but there was one line I would've loved to hear Biggs' take on. The one where he asked the Dream Beaver, "Am I dreaming you?" The line itself just made me laugh at how cute it was, and imagining Biggs saying it would've been funnier.

As for Raph's, which I love love love LOVED, I wonder if it was a fear. Not of snakes, but of Snake Karai harming the others (like she did him) and his inability to help his brothers given that he was tied up. Personally, I've always interpreted his character this way, based on season 1 eps and some season 2 moments. As for the metal band thing, that's probably a reference or homage to something else I'm not familiar with, but I was thinking when seeing it, "Yup, the turtles in a band would be nightmare material." *coughs*CotS*coughs* Seriously, I actually thought of CotS.

Out of everyone's nightmare, I'm most curious if Raph's will somehow play a part in the Dark Raph arc later.

As for the humans of the group. I really enjoyed them two as well, Casey especially, and it was nice to see them going to the store, which raises the question...what are they doing for money? In all honesty, at the beginning, I was wondering if April was going to be a decoy while Casey snatched stuff. He looked like he was going to steal something, didn't it? That aside, I like how he went back to confront the store owner over what was happening. He was really pulling through for his friends.

April trying to use her sense to get to all four turtles was good too, and to be honest, this didn't surprise me. This is the first time, unless I missed something, where April has used her mental powers and had control over it...like she was focusing and using Splinter's teachings. All the other times, she was in presence of the Kraang or all of her powers affected only stuff Kraang or Kraang related and also when overwhelmed or stressed, like in Kraang Conspiracy when they were hurting Raph, or in Mom-thing when Raph and Casey were finally taken by The Thing. They do all still train, including April (she said so in A Foot too Big and we saw her training in Within the Woods), so maybe she meditates and is training the mental power as best she can without a mentor presence. To me, this is what they're doing regarding her power. I don't feel it's from out of nowhere because of WHEN they're usually used, when she's not in control and under duress from the Kraang or she senses something is off which is normal for people in a general sense, with her it's just more enhanced...but it does bug me when she does get that sense, and states the obvious. Like, "Um...you didn't need your sixth sense for that." lol It's like that old Submariner cartoon from the 60s. For one of them, there was this huge alien sea monster thing outside of the building. The Submariner was like, "My mutant brain senses there's trouble" or something like that and I was like, "Um...look out the window. Everyone in that building you're in would know something's off." :p

Donnie was obviously in the deepest sleep. By the looks of it, he was the only one dreaming within a dream at one point. I also feel that April may have come across as most worried over Donnie because he was asleep the longest. When she and Casey left, they saw that the other three were the only ones training. They found Donnie in bed, which would kind of indicate that he'd never left it from the previous night or whenever.

He also stopped breathing, there was no indication saying the other three had (as I'm sure she would've realized it, as she'd been checking up on all four). I get the impression that Leo would've been next to fall victim, as he was the second one to get dragged into the dream world. Then Raph and then Mikey. I'm sure that if Leo had been the one to fall asleep first, then he would've been in Donnie's state, but it wouldn't have made sense to, as we wouldn't have been able to see that his knee was truly still a problem if it'd started with him in the dream right away.

So yeah, that's how I felt about the ep. Really liked it. Wonder if the Dreambeavers will come back.

Oh and which Beaver was which? Dave was easy to remember. lol He was probably the most dangerous of the Beavers. He comes across as the least threatening and then strikes. So I'm sure he's the most underestimated, just like how Mikey underestimated him and Dave pretty much said, "I'm killing you slowly." Okay, not like that, but you get what I mean.

I think every episode should improve something.

Whether it's an episode improving a character or the plot.

we should only have like...1-2 episodes in a season that are true TRUE fillers. (don't improve on anything)

but so far we have like 3 filler episodes.....it's annoying. At least teach some lesson. A foot too big would have improved Donnie's character, but it didn't cause he's still acting like a fool in front of April, so it's a filler.

Nothing improving is boring to watch.

Man, where to start with this review? I liked this a WHOLE lot better than I was expecting, honestly. Especially since the Beavers were voiced by two guys who were responsible for many of my childhood nightmares. Well, I take that back: Kassir was responsible for my nightmares; Englund gave me insomnia.

And watching it a second time, I noticed something about the Beavers.

Dark and Dave were voiced by John Kassir (Crpytkeeper)
Dire and Dread were voiced by Robert Englund (Freddy Kruger)

Dark - Donnie
Dave - Mikey
Dire - Leo
Dread - Raph

You guys getting the connection here? Englund voiced the beavers on Team A and Kassir voiced the beavers for Team B.

Not really relevant, but it caught my attention. Plus someone mentioned how they didn't know which Beaver was voiced by which actor, so there you go.

Plus I noticed how each dream was unique between the Turtles.

Donnie had your basic run-chase dream. Where no matter where you go or where you hide, the thing chasing you will always be right there!
(Also, just thought I'd bring this up, I watched this episode early this morning before work on iTunes and the minute it had Donnie "wake up" in the house, my parent's alarm clock went off. I'm not kidding; it was at the EXACT MOMENT! I thought it was from the cartoon and couldn't figure out why the alarm kept going even when Dark appeared behind Donnie. Apparently, mom thought it was my computer as well. Freaky, right?)

Leo had the "fighting for your life" dream. I know a lot of people think that it relates to Leo's fear of never getting better, but it was almost a "good" dream for Leo since he was all better and stronger, so maybe the purpose of Dire's dream was to keep Leo in a state of a never ending adrenaline rush. You know, to use up his life force quicker.

Raph's dream was almost like a torture dream. I really didn't feel any "Karai" connections, but maybe Dread used a bit of the memory in Raph's sub conscience to use a basis. Besides, I don't care how much you love snakes or if you have a pet python you snuggle with every day; if you were in Raph's position, you'd be scared out of your mind!

And I think Mikey was in the most dangerous dream of all. Yeah, yeah, Dave's an idiot, but if the purpose of the Dream Beavers is to keep you trapped in a dream and feed off your energy, why not make it more like a moth being drawn to a flame? Mikey thought he was perfectly safe in a world filled with talking lollipops and cute cuddly beavers who want to play with you, so he was completely at the mercy of Dave.

There's just one thing that bothers me about this episode: We're going to get SOOOOOOOOO many slash fan art (category, not character) of the Beavers and the Turtles, especially Donnie and Dark ("My salty little friend....") Tell me I'm not the only one who could picture Donnie screaming "I NEED AN ADULT!!! I NEED AN ADULT!!!"

Thanks for this. I knew who voiced which beaver, but other than Dave, I couldn't recall which turtle had which beaver by name other than Dave.

There's just one thing that bothers me about this episode: We're going to get SOOOOOOOOO many slash fan art (category, not character) of the Beavers and the Turtles, especially Donnie and Dark ("My salty little friend....") Tell me I'm not the only one who could picture Donnie screaming "I NEED AN ADULT!!! I NEED AN ADULT!!!"

You know, I could so picture Donnie saying that...in general. You know like when he gets manic and neurotic...yep, I could see it.

There is an actual, rare condition where one doesn't need sleep. Forgot the name, but yeah, in Bernie's case, he should be dead since he chose to stay awake. lol I actually thought there was going to be a supernatural reveal to him too after he said that.

Anyway, did anyone notice the "Got Milk" poster in the store? It had Bradford on it, though and it said, "Got Curd?"

I don't need serious, but I would like something that's just not stupid. I loved the eps like Monkey Brains, It Came From the Depths, Cockroach Terminator and Fungus Humungous. The new eps are just too OTT, ridiculous, and down right dumb. There is no witty humor, or truly hysterical moments like before. I have a feeling it's all due to the fact that this new guy, Brandon Auman, who wrote a few of the dumber episodes, and did some editing of the better ones in the past is all of a sudden head writer and head producer, and the guy probably doesn't know what the hell he is doing. The producers/Nick is probably spending all of their production costs on big name voice actors which nobody but a small group of people in the world really give a fu^&*ck about, but in the end, short changing the writers. You could have the biggest name celebrities you could think of in a movie/tv show, but if the writing sucks, not all of the oscar caliber acting in the world is going to save it. I think they should hire some really good writers to come back and draft some better thought out plots. Right now, the show is slowly losing my interest. Only reason why I hang on, it's because I'm a TMNT fan. But, what are the regular "casuals" going to think when they tune in? I bet they will be flipping through the stations, see TMNT, and wonder how come they are fighting a weird big foot, instead of using ninja moves against a serious opponent.

Well, I think it is crap. What's so great about these episodes? I sure as hell can't find anything great about them. The Turtles are barely doing anything, and there is like no progression with character. As for my cousins, it could have been a stint over the summer, but now that regular programming shows have resumed, it's possible that TMNT has paled in comparison to some of the shows they are interested in. They like to watch The Walking Dead, Sleepy Hallow and the new Gotham that's come out, along with Disney's Star Wars. The youngest one still has picks up of Mikey in her room, but I don't know what her thoughts are on the new show. Her mom just says she's more interested in playing in her room than watching the show now when it comes on Friday nights, or she begs her mom to put on The Walking Dead instead.

Ha...oh my. This episode. The best of season 3 thus far, no doubt - and I'd even go as far as to say it's one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. It was all over the place - I loved that. It followed the pattern of "Fungus Humungous" from Season 2, but was executed MUCH better. And Raph's dream...seeing the Turtles on air guitars while he gets wrapped by snakes. That was so oddly satisfying.

It's always the dark, twisted, trippy episodes that make me adore this show.
