Me too! Not seeing his glowing eyes on the outlines cover really made me think so, it looked like he was facing off against the gang with his back to us.

I wonder if Ray was human in this series, because Old Hob hates humans turned mutants. Given his full name is "Man Ray" it implies he should be human at least.

Yeah, Ray Filet used to be human in the Archie Comic, He was a marine biologist.

Well, they haven't given him his full name yet. For all we know, he's just "Ray".

From what little we know of Null's plan, legally it would be easier to argue mutants who were once animals or were created from scratch were non persons as opposed to people turned mutants. Though that may only be the tip of their larger plan and I suspect they are going to try to stay as off the radar of government observation as possible.

I suppose that opens up a whole range of questions about how Null keeps what it is doing secret. Pay close attention when they ask you to sign that non disclosure agreement Lindsey.

If it did turn out that Ray or Sally or both were human, and Hob did want to kick them out, that might be another trigger to cause Hob to leave or be ejected from the group himself.

Precisely what I was thinking.

Yeah, trying to argue that once-human mutants no longer have rights is a bit harder than trying to argue that animal mutants who are technically just animals-but-smarter can legally be slaves. Though the whole thing is still kind of ridiculous and I couldn't imagine it standing up in court long if it happened in the real world. You put a bidpedial animal mutant that speaks English in front of a TV camera, it's going to become a media darling and people are probably going to anthropomorphize the creature and agree to give it rights pretty quick. Our culture has been raised on the whole "robot/other creature is accepted as one of us" story long enough for it to seep into our national consciousness.

But then, making short-sighted decisions with the goal of reaping huge profits quickly while destroying the world in the long-term is kind of Null's thing.

Well, consider the occupations that doctor listed. Oil rig worker, deep sea fisherman, and something else similar. All of these jobs can be done "in private" and would never require a mutant to be seen by the customer. They could get away with it (in this fictional universe where Cat's lead street gangs, and pigs and rhinos buy breakfast with stolen cash).

Spoiler:
You know I wonder if we might see Dirtbag and Groundchuck down the line. They mentioned something about a mining facility.

I would LOVE to see those guys.

I'd also love to see Scale Tail--that was a great action figure...

That reminds me, the list of possible mutant occupations made me grin because it was reminiscent of the operations Null had going in the old continuity. Ray shut down the toxic waste disposal facility under the ocean in #16, there was that bit in the Mutanimals monthly about them shutting down a mining operation that used slave labor, etc.

I definitely believe there is a reason the team chose this direction for Null's corporation. I expect Scale Tail and others to show up at least as Easter Eggs or MAYBE as full-time characters.

I don't see too many more new characters joining the Mutanimals because you have to remember this is only a mini-series and after that the Mutanimals have to share time with all the other characters in the main series.

Introduce too many mutants and most of them will fall into the background and barely get any screentime or characterisation. Its already hard enough for them to juggle the screentime between the characters right now.

I think adding more characters is definitely going to start to crowd the team up a bit, although that doesn't stop characters from showing up in one shots and being put on a shelf storyline wise until a 'roster spot' opens up for them. Say the Mutanimals save Leatherhead in an issue. The issue ends with him staying with the Utroms. Or they meet Wingnut and Screwloose but they aren't ready to join. Then later Hob gets kicked out out this character dies or whatever and they reappear. Stuff like that.

Unless the Mutanimals blow up and become the TMNT equivalent of the X-Men with their own spin off of their spin off series then we can have M-Force and New Mutanimals and such.

With Krang out of the picture for the time being and Shredder probably about to be minimized for a bit post-#50, I expect there will finally be some time to better develop the side characters that have popped up the past couple years. The Mutanimals, Bludgeon & Koya, Renet... I could see them all popping up in stories more down the line when the turtles aren't dealing with Shredder and Krang every issue.

In other words::

The prospect of having a boatload of cash waved in your face can make you blind to problems. Of course, I tend to think Null (the character) has plans that her stockholders aren't aware of.

Hah... on a completely random side note, you're a fan of Freefall too?
