Oh, gods, if you haven't played the game 80 times the movie doesn't even make sense. I offer it as proof that I can occasionally enjoy something that's pure Style Over Substance if A: It's done well, and B: There's actually a reason for it beyond "Why Not?" It's a fun little romp for people who loved the game, and it looks great. I wanted to pop it in again since I've been playing Kingdom Hearts.

Exactly. I watched the movie on Blu-ray and it still holds up stylistically! The plot isn't even bad in concept (fan-service to the max) but the execution is so damn convoluted that it makes the game's story look like a Care Bears special in comparison.

Also they decided to give Cloud a grand total of 2 emotions which was a nice subtraction...

I agree with 85% of this. However, I actually loved the plot, and it was FAR better than Spirits Within as a FF movie. Also, Barret was da shizz-nit!

Meh, he never really had many emotions to begin with even in the game. I like to think of Cloud as the FF poster-boy for emo brooding.

Well, again, any movie plot that makes Zero sense without a wiki has ultimately failed to do its job. It's not even a question: Without extensive knowledge of the game, the story makes no sense, and it's just a bunch of flashy fights. So on that level, it's bad.

BUT, to those who ARE intimately familiar with the game, it's bliss. So it still has merit. Plus it's gorgeous.

Spirits Within was okay. Ain't nothin' Final Fantasy about it, though, which was annoying. Should'a just called it "Spirits Within: Let's Show Off Our CGI Animation Budget" and called it a day. Little truth in advertising.

I'll give you some credit on the story being heavily tied to the game's backstory, but it did make sense, at least to me. It was mostly its own thing, and honestly had less to do with the game's "main" story itself, as opposed to the backlash from what Shinra had been doing to the planet. The disease was the direct consequence of all that, as well as Sephiroth's own plot. It was pretty complex, but then, most FF stories usually are. But I loved the fights, and yes, they DID make the movie!

My wife saw the movie before she saw the game, and she was like, "I don't even care that I don't know what the f***'s going on." I imagine that's most people's reaction.

Like, with no background you have no idea who any of these people are or why they're popping up, or who the dead girl is, and why Cloud's so darn Emo, or ANY of it. But it's super fun anyway.

I always pop huge for "There's nothing I DON'T cherish!" and then he slices Sephiroth to ribbons with a billion giant swords. It's just so balls-out nuts. And when the whole team take turns tossing him in the air one-by-one like something outta Sonic the Hedgehog. Holy sh*t, I wanna watch it again right now. Damn it.

Watched Jurassic World today, it was alright and the ending was the best part by far.

Saw Jurassic World last night, wasn't as bad as I though it'd be, still can't get over how the dino's in Jurassic Park looked better than these.

In theaters:

Jurassic World - Not as bad as I thought it would be, but still not Jurassic Park.

Inside Out - Fantastic! Best Pixar film since Toy Story 3.

Minions - Not so good. Stupid, but with a few funny moments.

On DVD or Blu-Ray:

Inglorious Bastards (2009) - Great film! Watched it for the first time.

Catch Me If You Can - This a must see if none of you have seen it. Absolutely well-done.

Saw Spy with Melissa McCarthy- It was awesome, really fun and at times intense movie. Statham was also fantastic in it.

Not a movie per se, but I watched "Legends of the Superheroes" on DVD, the Hannah Barbera live-action variety show that aired on NBC in 1979.

It MIGHT be the biggest piece of sh*t I've ever seen. It's up there. It's 100% exactly what you'd expect live action Super-Friends in 1979 to be - complete with a laugh track, Adam West, and giant paper-mache helmet for Hawkman (and giant shag carpet wings, naturally).

Highest possible recommendation to Avoid.

I saw Ant-Man, it's pretty good. The set pieces are quite creative, and it was entertaining overall; I had a good time.

There is something forgettable about these Marvel movies for me however. I've enjoyed nearly all of them, but I never have the urge to watch them again for some reason.

Speaking of Marvel- I watched X-Men DoFP for the first time the other night. The Rogue Cut version. Loved it! FAR better than First Class, IMHO! Tied up some loose ends and "fixed" some stuff, and WOW was the cast great! I actually liked THEIR Quicksilver better than the one in Age of Ultron! This is easily my second favorite X-Men film now. I'd almost say first, but I loved the original one so much, before everything got bogged down with needless changes to Jean, second and third-gen characters being touted as "earlier" than they should be, and some of the other annoying crap from 2, 3, and FC. I was fine with the two Wolvie movies- they are 3 and 4 on my list.

There's also a "round table cast discussion" extra that was really cool. Loved that!
