The fact he's barely shown or mentioned in any previews has me nervous. I half-expect some huge "twist" like he's actually fallen to the Dark Side.

They'd have to really do some work to sell that one. I'm afraid they'll actually do it, though, because it's a guaranteed attention-getter. It'd be an easy way to firmly establish the "Everything You Knew From The EU Is Wrong" idea, too.

Mark Hammil mentioned how there's a "I'm your father" level twist in the movie, and that he's not even allowed to say if he's in the movie or not. I haven't really speculated about his role, but I'll be ecstatic to see him even if he's just there to give a lightsaber or whatever. JJ has also mentioned how he's channeling ANH and ESB in this movie. So yeah sadly a lot of retreading of the OT but still hyped. Hopefully the other directors take the franchise to new ground.

I once remember reading an article by a Star Trek fan about how the franchise was never the same after "The Next Generation" because the franchise stopped being about new stuff but re-creating all the cool stuff from TNG instead of taking us where we'd never been before. Hope that doesn't become of SWs. It's absolutely how everyone doesn't notice that they're pandering to the OT just to please fans and they're eating it all up as if JJ is a savior. I mean I'm as hyped as anyone but I don't spend countless hours online bashing the PT or watching those stupid hour long reviews bashing the PT and then eat this up as if it's all good. I can be negative about the pandering and also still enjoy the PT for what it is. Sorry don't want to derail the thread for a few pages again but yeah I can see all those people who bitch about the PT all happy because we got a movie recreating ANH/ESB, more of the same dammit! none of that silly choreographed lightsaber fights!

I don't like that either. I want more Luke, other than just the hand on R2D2 scene in one of the trailers. I assume that's him. I think Dark Side Luke would ruin his character. Didn't it temporarily happen in comic books?

Maybe the twist Mark Hammil is talking about is Anakin is somehow back from the dead.

It did, in "Dark Empire", and it was a fun read MOSTLY because it was something you could enjoy and take or leave as far as if it was "canon" or not. I mean the entire thing completely contradicted every single thing that happened in the Original Trilogy, so that's pretty bad. Luke's idea of, "I just want to go a little bit to the Dark Side... just enough to be able to wield enough power to stop the Emperor once and for all!" makes him an idiot in light of everything he's already been through, and it's pretty inexcusable, really. "Oh, god, I got in over my head and now I'm 99% Dark Side now! Leia, kill me!" Wow, didn't see THAT one coming. Who knew you'd fail by doing exactly what Yoda and Obi-Wan spent three movies telling you NOT to do? Dumbass.

If they'd told the story in a movie, it would have been sacrilegiously awful, because Luke turning to the Dark Side wipes its ass on the original movies. As a comic book mini-series that most people were never going to see or read it was fine. That's what they're for, telling stories that are neat to see but would completely undo the canon if they "counted". Luke falling to the Dark Side would imply he'd never learned a single thing and ultimately is even dumber than his whiny idiot father.

I mean I can see them doing it, but I'm never going to argue it's a GOOD idea.

Well they already seem to be ripping off plenty of ideas from the EU. The EU has been around for so long that authors in books/comics/other media have already come up with pretty much anything that can happen to those characters. The main characters have literally done everything already in other media. What they need to do is grab the best ideas and execute them better now that there's hindsight of what worked and what didn't work in the EU. But from some of the thing I've seen the new canon is already very convoluted and it's not even a year old.

As far as the Dark Empire comic where Luke goes to the dark side, you have to remember that this was basically the first official new story in the SW universe since RoTJ and that told what happened after the first movie, so everyone ate it up. I remember finding it interesting but I was a kid. It made sense that he wanted to understand the dark side to be able to connect more with his father and in the end he was able to turn to the light side essentially "beating" the dark side. Would I want that in a movie? Depends on the execution.

I like the idea of a non-canon comic book or even a non-cannon cartoon that explores character stuff like this. Putting it in a movie would be a shock value only move, so I take back what I said about thinking Emperor Luke would be awesome. When he threw down his weapon and said he'd never join the Dark Side in episode VI, that settles it for me.

It would be a rip off. Mark Hammil did mention a bad Luke in a video awhile back. I think it would have been an alternate Return of the Jedi, but as we know it didn't happen.

I'm not too big on anime, but I do watch Sailor Moon. I like that Clone Wars series the Samurai Jack series creator made or worked on, but that's not anime so I guess it doesn't count. I like how they explained how General Grievous developed the cough.

There is a 7PM early showing on the 17th that is 3D and a 8pm one in 2D. I bought my tickets to the 8pm one last night. Only 3 left for that show, but only a little over half of the 3D. Is anyone going to see it in 3d? I never saw the benefit of 3D aside from maybe Gravity.

I didn't know this movie had a 3D showing. I wonder if that would be distracting.
