Well, I think Utrom Shredder was a great idea because it took the best parts of two prominent villains (Krang and Shredder) and merged them into one that felt organic to the show, if undeniably a drastic change.

Shredder, with a personal vendetta against the Turtles and Splinter. Krang, an intergalactic warlord with much bigger goals of conquest than New York City. For Ch'rell, NYC was always just his launching pad, his goal of getting himself back into the stars. His target was always the Utroms, and the Turtles were on his hit list for aligning themselves with the ol Ooties. He would have just as easily worked with the mutants instead of against them.

Basically, I feel like it took risks, incorporated Fred Wolf without incorporating Fred Wolf, expanded the scope of Shredder, and also gave us that kickass decapitation scene which we would have never had otherwise.

Now, I don't ever want to see Ch'rell again. One radical departure was great, but it should never become the norm. But for what it was then, I think it was great.

I'm probably being more enthusiastic just because I've been having to watch idiots drivel and drool all over themselves about how good TMNT2 is gonna be. Makes everything even better by comparison.

Theres some really good stuff, and some pretty damn good direction in the Nick series. Of course, it has it's flaws...but as a best of all worlds, it's pretty good.

At the very least, it knows what it is, and what it's trying to say. It's not the deepest show, but it rings the right bells when it has to, and takes some interesting risks at times, especially with a fanbase more fickle than most trekkies.

The series has the potential to be Amazing but it's squandered by the lack of a more continuous story, lack of character development, and lack of consistancy. You'll have a lack luster episode like "The Creeping Doom" followed by a great episode like "Dinosaur Seen in Sewers". If every episode was as good as DSIS the series would rank almost as high as the 2003 series on my list of favorite turtle versions. I still love the show even if it's inconsistent as hell.

The Creeping Doom (or any other "filler" episode) isn't lackluster just because it doesn't contribute to the overall narrative, man.

A lot of us like standalone features. The TMNT were practically built on that format (Mirage, Fred Wolf cartoon).

It is quite inconsistent, I agree, but 2003 is very difficult to watch for me. Idk, it just falls flat, and i can't get around the art-direction. I really don't like it. My bigger gripe is the humor, coupled with the weird on the nose music.
Full disclosure, I didn't like Nick art-direction either at first, but I feel it's improved since ep1. and for what ever reason, kind of grown on me.

I have beef with all versions of TMNT though, I'm a bit savage.

It was lack luster to me for other reasons, It's hard to explain but I just wasn't interested in the episode. When I finished watching it it was kinda just dissatisfactory ( partly because of the Dumb Donnie part not really being that funny or interesting ) I found it kinda easy to forget ,I liked CreepWeeds design and the return of Creep and SnakeWeed but that was about it. Some of my favorite episodes are filler. I don't mind filler if it's done at an appropriate time but sometimes filler gets in the way with the story and it annoys me.

I can get behind that. When I said inconsistent, it feels like they have an A team and a B team...at least as far as the show is laid out. Some just have that zip to them, while others just sort of happen, or worse, telegraph the entire episode from the first minute.

Still, like I said, for all it's negatives, it really is pretty much the most inclusive TMNT, as far as reaching across Fan factions.
