But what I'm saying is he is supposed to be a modern hockey player. Wouldn't it be more likley he had a modern protective mask? I undstand that old mask were less protective. But haveing a more modern mask in the style Casey is known for is cool.

Three things:

1) Casey being a hockey player isn't a key part of his character at all. In fact, it wasn't even in his origins, as per Kevin Eastman himself:

Quote:
So I came up with the idea of this character who would be called Casey Jones and he would have two bats as his main weapon, and he would wear a hockey mask and sweats – just something he cobbled together. And at the last minute, Pete said, "Well why don’t you give him a golf bag and he’ll have all kinds of weapons in it?" And I’m like, "Dude, that’s it!" But that’s the kind of collaboration we had; it was always that kind of spontaneity, and how so many of the characters came together.
The 1990 movie gave him backstory as a hockey player, but the only reason he wore the mask originally is because they were going for a blue-collar thrown-together look, and the mask fit that concept and looked cool.

2) To that point, affordability. Modern hockey masks/helmets are expensive. Casey's supposed to be a poor, blue-collar kind of guy, so an older and cheaper used mask makes a lot more sense for him.

3) As I've already said, it just looks better. A bigger mask is more "realistically" protective, but the smaller one doesn't make him look like a human bobblehead. So he wears the simpler mask for the same kind of reason Superman and Thor wear capes that only stand to get in their way -- they're iconic and the characters don't look "right" without them.

Plus you can only use the word 'realistic' so much when the movie is about talking turtles and their talking rat facing off against a talking rhino, warthog and a talking brain inside a giant robot. We can swallow all this for the sake of convenience, but can't swallow that Casey will use a 'retro styled' hockey mask in modern day? Just go with it at least for the sake having something looking right out of the source material.

I mean the movie has a giant toy car with nunchuck arms..... I'd say the classic hockey mask is the least of their problems. Either that or pray Bay never touches the Friday the 13th franchise and mess with Jason's mask too.

It can be done for a Youtube video, but not a movie that cost hundreds of millions of bucks?

Give me a break.

Platinum Dunes Friday the 13th keeps the classic look, the movie is a snoozefest, but it looks very nice.

Longer hair would go a long way to balance out the mask. I don't mind the actual design, I just think it's way oversized.

That looks so much better, and it's not even hard to do! Aside from maybe the mask, a good-looking, accurate Casey Jones costume can be put together with some petty cash and a visit to the average pawn shop or thrift store. Grungy. Rough. Gets the feel for the character across immediately without needing to say a word (Show, Don't Tell and all) and leaves a much stronger visual impression.

Meanwhile, BayTurtles Casey looks like a bland Abercrombie model.

It's not his fault, he's an actor doing what he was hired to. But when I see Stephen Amell, I don't see someone playing Casey Jones -- I see Stephen Amell playing Stephen Amell.

But... but... the fans need equal opportunity! Boys stare at Megan Fox's butt and accomodating always-open mouth, and girls can now stare at Stephen Amell's glorious beefy abs!

Seriously, though, I'll bet you anything that's one of the reasons Amell was hired. Beefcake. Changing the Transformers male lead from Shia to Marky probably also helped a little in this regard.

Hell, I'd take a "Jason" styled more traditional hockey mask over this one that just swallows his whole head. He has used one in the past, after all. Sparingly, but still, there's precedence.

Yeah, I'd take a Jason mask over the full head covering mask. At least it's reminiscent of Casey's traditional look.

It's kinda like removing batman's ears or Superman's cape, it looks off with the wrong mask.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the movie specified that the sport he briefly played professionally was hockey even though that's the likeliest one. Could have been any sport, could have been cricket. Probably not golf.

Everything else though I have to give you a standing applause. I get that this version of Casey seems clean cut because he's just starting out but did then the character has always been presented as coming from a blue collar background and that he was a probably a tough guy even before became a vigilante.

The origin he was given in the '03 show and the Mirage comics bare this out and if they had to give Casey an origin (and I don't think it's a bad idea) they should have gone with something like that. What we're getting sounds like the antithesis of what Casey is. I suppose Amell would like us to think he'll become more like the Casey we know in subsequent movies but it seems a bit weird that he'll get more of a tough guy attitude and mo as time goes on and gets a bunch of new amazing like minded friends? Shouldn't it be the other way around?

I forget sometimes that Casey was not a hockey player in Mirage. I like the way it's been added to Nick and IDW. Refresh my memory - does he mention playing hockey in the 1990 film, OE is that just in the comic adaptation?

I actually mentioned to my wife just before, "They say in the movie that Casey 'played professionally', but they never say what. You can assume it was hockey, but you can assume anything." Serendipity!

I don't care if it's "modern" or "realistic", the mask and his entire "presentation" as Casey looks like utter sh*t. I don't care about the performance, we've seen nothing yet and I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about the fact that visually he's a f*cking horrible representation of "Casey Jones". A lot of what they have chosen to do visually with these films is objectively terrible. And those are choices, that someone made on purpose. Makes me sick. "Let's make it look bad on purpose. Bet'cha they don't even notice!" Ugh.

Bry, they have him driving a friggin' expensive sports car around, too, so I think we can safely toss "blue collar nutcase" Casey out the window.

It's LITERALLY not Casey Jones. He doesn't look like him, act like him, or even have the same background, motivations, etc. "But he wears a hockey mask, sometimes! He's totally Casey!" A mask is not a character, nor is it character development! And they didn't even get THAT right!

Just awful. You can see that Casey was absolutely the thing they gave the least amount of thought or care to. On the opposite side, you have Krang, where it actually looks like they did some homework, and then in contrast you have "Casey", who's literally just Amell walking around in whatever clothes he showed up to the set wearing.

Boooo.

Aha! Nice catch, dudes. I guess I based that on an assumption -- a safe assumption, sure, but I like how vague they kept his backstory there.

This whole "this is the character BEFORE they become the character you love" trend has gone way too damn far. It's nothing more than a cheap excuse for the filmmakers getting it wrong, and even if it is done on purpose... Who exactly would want to see some proto-version of that character instead of the actual character?

answer: nobody, literally nobody

Completely and willfully missing the point of a beloved character so that Bay can blow premium screentime on car porn/product placement? I am shocked. Shocked.

To address both of your statements. I actually like this new take on the character and I think it fits his character perfectly.
Seeing as his character is one who always involves some form of abuse. As well as wanting to help others in need. Picture him fight throughout his younger years to get justice only to pursue become the antithesis of that ideal and becoming a cop. Only so relies that the "law system" is flawed so he then picks up the mantle of the hockey mask wearing vigilantly. I just think that's quite interesting.

Now I'm not saying that's what this movie is doing. But I can see the being a cop thing working for his character.

No, that's Batman. People keep trying to give Batman's origin to other characters. Stop that.

Bruce Wayne once joined the police academy, then quit because he felt it was too corrupt and impotent and he couldn't change the world that way. Casey Jones, according to established canon, once bagged groceries for a living and is a struggling alcoholic with an abusive but mysterious past, who we know likes to beat people with sporting equipment but otherwise we don't know much.

Not at all the same character. But then, the guy in this movie bears no reasonable resemblance to Casey Jones, period, so...

Nothing they're doing "fits the character perfectly". They're just making up a new character and giving it a familiar name. That's called "lazy writing". You don't just take an established character, change everything but the name, and say, "It's the same guy". No, it absolutely is not the same guy.

Once again, "It's tangentially-connected to TMNT, thus, It Is Good, Whatever 'It' Ever Happens To Be." How is an approach that disregards EVERYTHING about a character, "a perfect fit for the character", exactly? That's rather contradictory. It's less about the corrections officer thing, which is just one thing in and of itself; it's more that they've gone out of their way to get the character COMPLETELY wrong on purpose. And that just doesn't make any sense why they would do that.

I'm sorry but just because in some continuity atman happens to join the police doesn't make it his "thing". And you act as if Casey is this o be notw character with no back story. And then say that trying to flesh out said back story is wrong and out of place. In Ida he has an abusive father, he then goes on to help the turtle pretty much because we want to do good and help people. He's not just some psycho who just like the beat the **** out of people.

So why not build of the ice idea guy wants justice(which is a Casey jones trait and a major part of his character. So he joins the police only to find some more needs to happen. So he becomes a vigilante. So because this version doesn't have him being poor means it's not even close to his character? I just don't agree. Most of his back stories involve is loved one getting hurt and his hate for crime. And what better way to fight crime then to join the police. I'm sorry but I don't think him being poor while being and adult is Important. Especially if the reason he is more well off is because he happens to be a cop of all things.

I mean I new youn and other would disagree with me but. But it all fit for me. As soon as a heard about his back story I was thinking "this is cool"

Of all the different versions of Casey Jones I've ever seen I can't think of one who would join the police force. To me it does seem out of character for a guy who's pretty much a street tough on the side of good. Everything about his vigilante identity is also cobbled together from nothing so if they do really have him driving a sports car around in this movie that another big example of them missing the point.
