Mutagen changes color when it gets unstable according to Donatello's opinion.

Maybe the multiple colors could be akin to that of Kryptonite...?

This is the original mutagen.
still purple, still original mutagen. I'm not sure what you get when you mix purple and blue but I'm willing to buy it's orange. At some point in the series regular mutagen became green instead of purple. This wasn't really classic mutagen though, other chemicals got mixed with it too. It didn't have the same results of classic mutagen. When the cows touched it. They just merged into a monster. Same comment as the one on the picture with the frogs. Again, not mutagen. It actually reversed rock soldier mutations and turned the turtles into balloons or something. Not classic mutagen either. It was super mutagen, Krang and Shredder talk about it earlier in the episode. Good enough explanation of why it's not green or purple. This was expired mutagen. That's why it turned tutti frutti. |

These are all great examples of regular mutagen having turned green i/o purple at some point in the series.

Strange mutagen
Another strange (alien) mutagen is this in Archie
http://tmntentity.blogspot.com/2011/...-fillet-3.html where affected also become 5 000 years old. This can't be the same mutagen as Shredder and Krang used, as it don't turn them that old (at least not in the 1987 cartoon), even in Archie Raphael and Ninjara told they would live very long, but not thousands of years. |

Speaking of mutagen in the Archie book Year of the Turtle had what Don described as crystaline form of mutagen.
You could also argue that the Muta Crystals from the anime was the same deal. |

Great, now I want orange ooze. Or, short of that, Ecto-Cooler.
As for the coloring issue, purple, green, blue, black, it doesn't matter -- as long as it does what it does. I suppose for personal preference, I'd pick green after being used to the first toyline, and all. |

Bringing this thread back up because of the screenshots in the first page, proving the mutagen was green in most episodes of the original cartoon after the first season.
