I'm a liberal minded person but even I have to step back and look at how frequently this keeps happening to redhead characters. Redheads are today most associated with people from Celtic nations, particularly Ireland which has the highest percentage. The Irish are a historically oppressed people. Is this just a modern continuation of that in action?
It's a growing list too!

Hawkgirl in CW shows
Iris and Wally West in CW Flash
Jimmy Olsen in Supergirl tv show
Starfire in Titans live action show (not sure if really counts being alien)
Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in Lego Batman movie
"MJ" in MCU Spider-man films
April in Rise of Tmnt

Now live-action Ariel

C'mon you know whitewashing in Hollywood happens a lot, right. Like way more than the other way it just doesn't get the same level of coverage and thus doesn't generate the same level of outrage. I know you specially used black since there's less than explicit the examples of that in modern Hollywood but from Johnny Depp playing Tonto to Jake Gylenhal playing the Prince of Persia it is way more prevalent.

That's not even counting Biblical films which take place in Middle Eastern countries but still cast white people or American-ized versions of foreign works or adaptions of manga or anime which do the same even when the characters explicitly supposed to look Japanese.

As for it being about the character while that's true in most cases you know this is done as an equaliser for people that are traditionally underrepresented in Hollywood that it defeats the purpose going the other way. However in principal sure unless a character's story is specifically tied to their race there's nothing to stop them race bending. Black Panther can't be white but then there's nothing to say you can't have a Terry from Spawn be white..oh wait they kinda did that too.

Even then there's people that will disengenuously use any argument to promote whitewashing. Remember the contortions people had to defend William Fichtner as the Shredder. "Oh a white guy can't play Shredder now? That's reverse racism" or "maybe he was adopted by a family in Japan" and the like.

At the time lots of people said it and I'm not looking forward to similar strained quasi scientific explanations of why mer-people people can't have dark skin.

I knew in my gut what kind of video that would be when I clicked it but I hoped against hope it would be a whimsical video showing what black celebrities would look like if they were white or something. I suppose I only have myself to blame when my recommendations are filled with alt right weirdos talking about white genocide.
I don't care about the side politics of white genocide, Just the TV shows base on historic people who are white in real life, getting turn into black or mix race in the tv show. Joan of Arc and that white Princess from the 1500's.

As opposed to the lefties who minimise, champion, or outright deny large scale cultural appropriation..

...Rather than, y'know, do something original.

You know I don't mind "MJ" in the new Spiderman movies being black, I'm kinda fine with that. But this just feels strange or wrong, like they purposely went out of their way to cast a black actress for a character like Ariel whose design has been iconic for 30 years since 1989.

Granted all the live-action Disney movies are completely forgettable/skippable in the first place so I don't really care that much anyway, but it's just a strange decision.

Just in case no of you were born around the time of when Disney was being diverse in fairy tale projects, here are some clips of when Brandy played Cinderella in Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella for The Wonderful World of Disney alongside the late great Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother.

Also, here is a clip of Toni Braxton performing a song, "A Change in Me", that was added to the musical Beauty and the Beast just for her. The song has remained with the show ever since her involvement.

Plus, in case no one already knew the role of Kristoff in the Broadway production of Frozen is being played by an African-American actor. This summer he's also going to originate the titular role of the Disney theatrical show Hercules.

There's never any coincidences. People warn us for years of globalist stratagems in western culture and we laugh them all the way to the bank

But what would be the end goal here? If this actually is some "agenda," what would be its purpose?

Let's also not forget that Catwoman went through quite a change in the third and final season of Adam West's Batman. Instead of getting Lee Meriwether from the movie, they decided to be diverse.

Y'know there's a point to be made that recent examples are concentrated on red headed women and if you're a traditionalist it's not wrong to prefer the original version of any character whose race has been altered.

Still it's equally important to point that race bending in mainstream media is still mostly people of colour being turned white by a much bigger margin and never gets this level of meltdowns.

You could even make a case that Disney's previous version of Ariel was whitewashed too. I know the story is Danish but she's the daughter of Poseidon, right? Shouldn't she look Greek? The again if we're sticking true to the original then shouldn't she also have her heart ripped out so there's that.

You do realise Ariel isn't a a real life historical figure. She's an entirely fictional character, Mermaids aren't real.

Well it's nice that people suddenly care about cultural appropriation. Maybe these alt right figures will stop using it as their origin stories of how they became white nationalists. "I used to be a liberal guy until they said me singing along to Usher was cultural appropriation and in that moment I saw the left for what they truly are and decided to hang out with Nazis".

But yeah about the other kind of "cultural appropriation" that the globalists (mostly code for the Jews) are among other things altering western pop culture promoting Elvis Presley's hips to make white women promiscuous, Idris Alba's career to make white women think black men attractive and Captain Marvel all to weaken the white male race...to what end?

Seriously what is the motivation for doing this? And why are major corporations that care only about money not doing what is immediately profitable (presumably exclusively white male led movies) rather than undertaking the long arduous and unprofitable task of long term brainwashing. Wouldn't weakening the white race affect their profit margin.

I'm all for equality and recasting ethnicities and whatever, but I'm kind of drawing the line here... I'm sure she's a lovely actress, but that's not Ariel and I'm kind of getting sick of Disney jumping on the "Look at what we did, aren't we great because we cast someone black for white role! Now give us your money because we're so amazing!" I swear it's no longer about equal rights and it's all about raking in the cash and political pandering to idiots who just want to be seen on the "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT WHAT A GOOD PERSON I AM! I SUPPORT THIS BECAUSE I AM A GREAT WHITE PERSON!" wagon. Next it will be if you don't go and SEE the new Little Mermaid you must be a racist! *smacks forehead* Just like if I didn't watch the new Rise series I was racist too. I'm just tired of it not being the same both ways. The double standard, often referred to as privilege is just getting out of control. I'm tired of seeing white roles filled with other ethnicities and companies being praised so much for it, but if God forbid if you white wash another role you get freaking crucified and labeled a racist. (just one example off the top of my head was the recent Ghost in the Shell when people snapped because it wasn't an Asian actress) No. I'm not a racist... I just really wanted to see a ginger finally get some work.

John Wayne predates my time, but I was pretty upset a White guy was playing Genghis Khan who is Asian. How in the world did people making a movie about the first Khan say you know what? Wayne looks sort of Asian lol. No. And your right, the Little Mermaid is Greek if her father is Poseidon, which is not really "White" more olive skin color. Its not that I am against turning white people into black, but this goes for all races. The legend or historic events have a setting. Hercules is Greek, Maui is from Hawaii, Zamba is African, Just changing there race to keep other race happy is wrong imo. I be upset over a White Memon (Legend does say he is black) as I would be with a black Achilles.

Nah, but seriously, it's just another form of control, only this time the sides have flipped, they're utilising the one thing people aren't tailored to fight against without looking like a "monster". They're using peace, diversity and tolerance as weapons and attempting to sheep-herd and thought patrol people, labelling them racists/misogynists/alt.right is the easiest thing to do because it's a universally praised practitioner of justice, things that appeal to every wild free hipster spirit. It's a romanticised notion of how to run the world that appeals to the younger and more naive generations.

Real talk here is that the world doesn't, and will never, run like that, without conditioning and taming the truest expression of diversity. Nor should it. Leave it to Roddenberry.

Her father is King Triton not Poseidon. Poseidon would be her granddad, Y'know the god that fathered all cyclops so clearly gods don't give a **** about genetics.

And Triton a redhead had several children with his wife, also a redhead and their kids have all the range of hair color.

Plus, Ariel is a fictional character that have no significant anchor to any etnicity or background as she's a character based from a story made by a guy who with a self-insert OC put words to his pain for pining for a guy who did not return his feelings, and said mermaid OC is itself based off mermaid myths from Germany.

You're only mad about his skin Color? Yet Achilles was described as 10 feet tall yet here we are with no giant on-screen Achilles.

Black Achilles bad, but White Paris the Turkish prince good?

I get the feeling the phrase, "Not that there's anything wrong with that!" is going to be the go-to phrase going forward for these kind of issues if it isn't already.

I don't care for a black Ariel, but I'm fine with black actors/actress in general in major roles. "Not that there is anything wrong with that."

I mean how would people feel if DC took Cyborg from Teen Titans and made him white? Cyborg is a known black superhero spanning decades, imagine how a "white" Cyborg would be received. Again, "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

White people don't want to see black characters turned white, CyberCubed. Which is why I find myself scratching my head when people applaud when things go the opposite way. We should strive for authentic representation of all types of people.

Yes, there are well documented examples through the history of media where white people play non-white characters, and characters that should be POC being changed to white. In modern day I think nearly everyone agrees it shouldn't be done, but we can't change what previous generations have done. We can only do better going forward. But I also don't want to see things swing far in the opposite direction. To me, neither are fair or culturally sensitive.

I have no problem with black characters or characters that can be interpreted as any race as being portrayed as black. What I'm seeing here is a trend that is specifically targeting red-haired characters for whatever reason. Is that even up for debate? The evidence is clear.

I don't feel that Cyborg being black is 100% necessary for his character, just like being white is not 100% necessary for Batman. But I would not want to see a white Cyborg. No matter how good White Cyborg turned out to be, it would always feel like an inauthentic imitation to me. And that is how I feel about a lot of these other examples.

It is a weird trend making redheads into Black people like, I get Annie cause it fits the story better in a modern version and Firestar kept her hair so that's fine.

At least it's not another PoC Disney protagonist turning into a animal for the majority of the movie. There's transformation, but it's just the legs

It has become a trigger warning of sorts.

I personally wouldn't care.
I mean, the no.1 priority for me is that the character is entertaining, first and foremost.

For example, Baxter Stockman in the Mirage Comics was black originally, but then changed to a white man in the Original Cartoon.

I like both versions, but not because of either's race, and I didn't feel any outrage when I learned that the character was "whitewashed"

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.
