It's partly because race-flipping is cheap heat, and partly because I actively hate these actors. Zoe Kravitz has a job in Hollywood because of her Dad being a famous rock star; unpopular opinion or not, it's the truth. She's nothing but a female version of Jaden Smith, another talentless nobody who gets major roles because of who their Daddy is. Robert Pattinson has a career for no reason beyond the fact that for ten years he made teenage girls' 'gineys tickle. The guy looks like a f*cking heroin addict; absolutely nothing about him suggests Batman. He's the least Batman-like actor to have the role since Adam West. BUT, he'll push a lot of tickets to the girls who grew up flicking their bean to those sh*tty Twilight movies, and that's what WB is counting on.
It's the very definition of "stunt casting". They're desperate for attention. They don't know how to make a "good movie" so they're going for the easy pop. It's so transparent it's laughable. Everything this movie is now compared to what it was going to be originally is a huge step backwards, and I genuinely don't care about it. I frankly don't care about any CBMs going forward, because I'm a comic book fan first and foremost, and I'd rather read Good Stories than watch watered-down and half-assed versions of those stories and characters. There hasn't been a single comic book movie yet - in my opinion - that's actually BETTER than what's on the printed page, and I don't expect that to change now that the game plan seems to be, "Get as far AWAY from the books as possible" as a general rule. I'm not a person who caves in to hype, consensus, or peer pressure. I haven't seen a single MCU film since "Age of Ultron", not even on cable, because I have less than zero interest in those films. I most likely will not see them anytime soon, if ever. I do not "cave" to overwhelming popular opinion, I do not care what other people like, and I don't care what other people think. I like what I like, and my opinions are entirely my own. Other people can have their opinion, but it's not going to sway mine one way or the other. I'm a little offended at the implication that it can be done, to be honest. So yea, no. Barring some huge, earth-shattering development, I have no plans at present to see this movie. I reserve the right to change my mind - I didn't care about "Joker" originally, either, and that turned out alright - but I don't see that happening. Not when so far, the two biggest "hooks" that are supposed to get me interested are, "Look! The Twilight Guy!", and, "Half of the white characters are black now." Buuuuuut, it's the kind of thing you do when you're Warner Bros. and have no idea what the f*ck you're doing. "How do we sell this Batman movie? What sells nowadays?" "Well, 'Black Panther' made over a billion dollars..." "Who the hell is 'Black Panther'? Who the hell made THAT so much money? I never even heard of it." "Umm... black people, sir. They loved it." "Okay, great! That means all we have to do is cram a bunch of black actors into this Batman flick, and it'll make us a billion dollars AND we'll be on the cover of TIME Magazine, right?" "I... maybe...?" "I need more than a f*cking 'maybe', STEVE!" I promise you, word-for-word, that exact conversation happened. Probably just last week. I'unno, it's whatever. I tapped out when they announced RPatz; there's pretty much nothing they could do to win me over, at this point. I'm simply pointing out all the ways in which they're pushing me further away as they go along. People thinking that they're making these choices for any sort of altruistic reasons rather than to check off boxes on a checklist, though, is by far the funniest part of the whole thing. "As long as they're picking the best actors for the roles!" Stunt casting. Case f*cking Closed. |

That's just blind assumption, imo. You calling out WB saying they are casting the way they are because the movie has nothing else to offer, at this point, is unfounded. Based on your feelings about Joker, I don't understand why you are so insistent on judging a film you know so little about. The script could be god damn fantastic for all we know.
As for the specific casting, you may be right about the girl, I don't know. But I'm curious as to what you've seen about Robert Pattinson, because those are some serious accusations that he has nothing going for him as an actor. I've been meaning to watch some of his independent films this week because I hear he is absolutely great in them, but as of now, I havent even seen Twilight. Will report back soon. The comics vs comic book movie is a bit odd to me, because there is such a wide sample to pull from. A blanket statement or "none of the movies have been as good as the comice" seems crazy when looking at just how much there is of each. Sure, the best comics are better than the best movie adaptions, arguably, but it's not like the classic comics are coming out every single week..The Dark Knight, Logan, Spider-Man 2, etc... these films are 100x better than plenty mainstream comics being released. And I worship the comics. |

Like, would the daughter of Ricky Martin be able to get "a push"? I dunno. Maybe a little one.

He's still being played on the radio literally every day. He's way more famous than most people. And I'm pretty sure his kid's only "famous" because he's "Famous". He might not be Tom Jones but I'm pretty sure his daughter'd be working at Starbucks if it wasn't for her last name.
Anyways. I don't like this cast. It's very hard for me to enjoy a movie if I don't want to watch the people in it. That's my prerogative. "Joker" is a bad comparison because I never doubted that Phoenix would be good in it, but until seeing it I simply wasn't sure it needed to be made in the first place and wondered if it had a point, but I never doubted that Phoenix would give a good performance. I liked him in other things, so I correctly assumed that I'd like him in that film as well. It's far less likely that a bunch of people I already don't like are going to win me over. At best, if the story was good, I'd still be wishing it was being played out by different people. The cast is like half of any movie, for me. I don't like this cast, therefore I am not excited. Feel free to be excited Way Over There. That doesn't affect me in any way. |

Again, I thought Pattinson was great in "Cosmopolis," and that character was basically Bruce Wayne. And that was 7 years ago, he's probably even better.
I've never seen any Twilight movies.

I may check that out.
I've been meaning to watch this, because it has great reviews, and it included with Amazon Prime, I believe... https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/good_time I am also looking forward to seeing "The Lighthouse", which has a limited release going on this month. It's directed by Robert Eggers, director of "The Witch". So Robert's in it, and that's not why I'm interested in it, but it will be a nice bonus to see what he can do there too. |

How is criticizing Robert Pattison based on his previous "big name role" any different than criticizing Ben Affleck or Heath Ledger for the same?

I mean, not liking him is fair, but calling the entire film into question for casting him, with only knowing his Twilight work, is foolhardy, IMO. |

I don't have as much of a problem with Pattinson (at all, really) as much as I have a problem with being cheated out of getting even 1 Affleck Batman movie. In that mostly I feel bad for him. Certainly if he'd known this is the way it would have panned out or anything close to it, he wouldn't have signed up for just half a movie in BvS and something as ghastly as JL's final form.
Now in "Who was the best Batman?" debates, (some) people will invariably say, "Boy, not Affleck... BvS and JL sure sucked donkey balls!" But that's not fair, because we didn't even get a single Batman movie with him to properly judge. Similar when people remark on the Jared Leto Joker. We don't know if he's a good Joker... Suicide Squad hardly gave him anything to do. He had like, extended cameos in it and wasn't even a villain in it.

I loved nearly everything about his Batman and his version of the film crashing and burning hurt me for a while, but I’m over it now. I think Joker rising from the ashes of that, in one way or another, helped soothe that for me. But yeah, I’d still love to see it. WB, throw in the the “else worlds” category and let Ben do his thing. And yeah, Ben was just another actor who was shat on by the majority when cast as Batman. In fact, which actor wasn’t? I think Christian Bale got off lightly because basically no one cared anymore until Batman Begins actually came out and blew us all away. As for best, Christian Bale still tops for me. Shoutout to Kevin Conroy, but that’s another ballgame. |

Pure speculation, but Jonah Hill is a guy who likes to come to a part with a ton of ideas of his own. Ideas that maybe would not jive with what's planned out. Maybe with it taking 18 years to write the script for this movie and it having the first relatively solid release date in ever, Reeves and WB just can't/won't humor him.

I have to wonder if it has to do with the role. I have to think it's the opposite of flattering being offered the Penguin role. Hell, I don't even think I'd take it.

It's a little troubling strike to the... confidence in the faith in the DCEU, but I really hated that casting to begin with. JK Simmons is awesome but he's no Gordon. I don't know that we'll ever see a more perfect casting than Oldman.

That's my theory, I think it makes sense, and I support Jonah 100% if my theory ever turns out correct. And I HATE the idea of Seth Rogen in this movie. Fvck no. Jonah Hill can do serious. I don't believe the same of Rogen... never saw HIM impress me in War Dogs.
