Too much invested by Playmates and investors. I'm no expert in these matters, but I'm imagining there is some guaranteed # of episodes/seasons they (Nick/Viacom) have to hit to not be in violation of whatever was agreed. So even if they know things aren't going to turn around, they have to ride it out a bit.

But if we're going to point out silly things the first cartoon did, I prefer when Leo's swords turn to ice cream and he goes "Ice cream? Yuck!" and throws them down... like the only guy in the history of the universe, both real and imaginary, to ever be disgusted by two ice cream cones. What do you have against ice cream, Leo??

That series is all kinds of silly... but it's a genuine, innocent late 80s silly, not a "look how weird/stupid we can act!" forced expression of trying too hard to be silly.
