Classic Episode Discussion: Return of The Fly

I did not see a thread for this shockingly. Allow me to start it as I make commentary as I watch the episode.

-Michael Reaves I believe has the second most episodes written after David Wise. Reaves wrote Enter: The Fly as a co-writer. He has a solo effort here.

-The title card with Leonardo in an orange mask really should have been corrected.

-Electricity will cause his vibrations to slow exactly to the point of being in phase with the rest of the world again? Um,okay. It also happens within seconds of Baxter arriving.Oh, plot convinces!

-One of Greg Berg/Scooter's seven outings as Donatello and Bebop. Was it Barry Gordon becoming the SAG president that kept him from these VA sessions?

-Ah, despite Baxter's dewiddled intellect he remembers the easiest way to get to the Turtles and April speaks of wanting something interesting to happen to fit irony into the situation.

-Rat King appears. Was he swimming? He bubbles up in front of the Turtles. Also, this is the ONLY time he was a neutral character. People claim he is mysterious and not evil. He definitely is and tihs appearance is sole not evil appearance in any media. All other times he is a bad guy. A soft spot for April and he was not involved in her kidnapping? He likes her red hair.

-Baxter is so easily duped. It makes me wonder if the Turtles could talk sense into him.

-Rat King admires Mickey Mouse, mice and rats are similar but different species. Templeton or Rizzo would have worked better even if we as children may not have got the reference right away.

-Its not until Baxter, Shredder, Bebop, and Rocksteady appear in the subway station do the Turtles learn that Baxter Stockman is the fly mutant. It was never mentioned to them before when they encounter him those three scenes in Enter: The Fly.

-Whatever Baxter injects into the gasline is not addressed. It does give us a glimpse of Mike's future use of the grapple-hook.

-'April, it won't be safe'-Leonardo 'Stay here and miss the story of the century? No way!". No one argues. Raphael, 'I knew he would say that and I knew she would say that!". Line still gets me to snicker.

-Freeze ray blasters? This is the only time the henchmutants use these, correct? Why all of a sudden and never again? Is it all about plot convince? It turns all the water to ice and moves Baxter from one scene to another.

-How long is that tunnel to the Technodrome? That has got to hurt!

-Good line by Rocksteady after Bebop questions why Baxter is going down the module-made tunnel with them, "Haven't you heard there are flies at every picnic".

-In response to their arrival Krang says to Shredder,' Well, Shredder there is another scheme of yours down the tubes'. In the first scene Krang was going over a map with Shredder. It's not Shredder's scheme, but THIER scheme in the ongoing plight to repower the Technodrome.

-After Krang speaks that he prefers to not have Baxter work with them Baxter suddenly breaks free of the block of ice angry at the insult. How could he hear them encased in ice?

-This will have some continuity aspect to it just like Enter: The Fly to Return of the Fly. Baxter simply flies off in the underground and will run across the ancient spaceship before Bye,Bye Fly.

Anyway, I prefer creating new and freash threads after all these years rather than bumping threads from 2002 and 2003 where most members have either left, or ended up banned years ago.

Wasn't Rat King a neutral character in Pizza by the Shred? I thought he only ordered a pizza or something. It's been years since I've seen these so maybe there was something nefarious there.

He stole the pizza meant for the Turtles from April. His lair is where the action takes place. It became a three way pizza fight.

Another favorite episode of mine.
I always liked Baxter Stockman, so he is appearance was a delight.

I'd prefer if he appeared more prominently in the series, but whatever.

Funnily enough, Baxter is the most frequently re-occuring side character in the entire show, with 13 episodes.

Might not seem like much today but in a cartoon where most side characters were lucky to have a second appearance, Baxter was a god among men.

Shredder could've done more than blow up the Channel Six building. I don't mean as far as murdering Splinter, but think of the possibilities if censors were not an issue.

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

His brother Barney Stockman also had an appearance, in Raphael Knocks 'em Dead.

True, but he is a separate character. Same character design but it's not Baxter. Apparently word got around of what happened to Baxter since Barney mentioned Baxter's accident.

Baxter does have the most appearances of a regular character.

Barney Stockman probably only heard rumours, and thought it was an expirement going wrong.

I like the advice the guy gives on the video tape bebop and rocksteady watch:

“Anger is counterproductive. Don’t get mad, just get the job done. Turn your enemy into your friend, your pal.” I think this is great advice for anyone.

Also Rocksteady ruins the module with his outburst. I feel it’s a good lesson not to let your anger get out of control.

The anger management tapes had good advice for us in the work place. Rocksteady and Bebop as well did not learn from the video ruining Shredder and Krang's scheme.

I think Bebop did a better job though, he kept reminding Rocksteady to stay in control but it seems Rocksteady wasn’t really listening well.

Great analysis!! There's one more grievance about this episode. In "Enter The Fly", Shredder threw Baxter into the portal in exchange for Bebop and Rocksteady where he was to be disintegrated. When their plan for the water plant failed, Shredder boated that he brought "The most brilliant criminal mind since Einstein" to work for them. OK...????

Are you implying that the turtle holding the slice of pizza is Mike instead of Leo? Any of the Turtles would eat pizza even if Mike is the most ecstatic for the food. I do not see it as an error. Its the katana blade the turtle is wielding while wearing an orange eye mask that is an obivious error.

I agree here.

Also, thanks Cammy85.

Brill analysis. I watched this episode for the first time in years yesterday and thought it was very good. The banter between Bebop and Rocksteady was hilarious.

Leonardo eating pizza is OK. Michelangelo holding the swords isn't.

Usually I don't like substitute voices, but this is the rare time it works. Shredder turned into a fly required a different vocal and James every only ever voice a robber in New York's Shinniest and Chrime Dome in the 2 part Planet of The Turteloids.

Also I want to add to my og post a note,Greg Berg who subbed for Barry, was he choosen based on Scotter being the tech savvy Muppet whereas Don is the tech savvy Turtle and kids would identify it as a smart character voice instead of trying to copy Barry's voice? As Bebop it is hardly noticeable and fine, but I cannot help but question the above about Donatello and Scooter.

I will run through Son of Return of The Fly next in the same format. Do you all want me to post on the 2013 thread or make a new thread for it?

Post new and fresh threads. The old threads are just full with users who have left or been banned years ago.
