Black April

I kinda feel that for whatever reason the woke wackos felt there NEEDS to be a black April and since they had one in a cartoon show nobody really watched, they should try again in a more mainstream movie.

Ironically, now they shielded themselves because they can now point at Rise and act like 'what's the big deal? this isn't the first time she was black'.

I'm with CyberCubed on this one. We probably won't see a white red haired April again in movies. She gotta be black from now on because wokeness has gotten too big to be stopped. Race swapping white characters is the new trendy thing to do to show representation and give POC second hand characters, because coming up with new ones in established works is hard.

Doubt it and it's only twice... a bit early to assume.

Makers of this stuff seem so concerned now with reinvention and doing things different to make it their own... but now we're going to be well into "been done already" territory, it wouldn't surprise me if we move on to a 3rd ethnic background next time.

Changing April up like this though, I'd rather they created a character who is clearly mixed. You don't end up with a very specifically Irish surname without being of Irish decent. It might have worked with a generic widespread name like, say, Smith, but a name like O'Neil on someone not Irish is the part that has bugged me. (But that's probably also the genealogist in me that can't buy it.)


Personally though, I'm more concerned we'll be stuck having the "teenage" part of the title shoved to the forefront from now on and making them increasingly kiddie in shows/movies. Really starting to want the in name title only bit back. Nothing wrong with "older" Turtles who can be role models (excluding the violent part) instead of peers driven into being teen stereotypes.

Hijacking an existing character for your own fiendish needs should simply be referred to for what it is then - sloppy seconds. You can't contribute in any meaningful way or create anything people want to see? Okay go ahead, you can have the sloppy seconds there - go get into that movie.

Why do you want April to be black though? What’s wrong with a new black TMNT character? Unless minority groups are not worth the effort of coming up with original well-written characters who could also represent them in the story? Just paint all the white characters black or brown and you’re done, right?

If making a new black character is too hard. Just make Irma Black that would be a happy medium. I don't think people would be that upset over Irma compared to April

I honestly wonder why they don't make Casey black instead of April. I think people would accept a black Casey more, since Casey can be "from 'da hood" and be from a poor black family who wants to clean up crime in his fair streets. Casey already used a lot of homie lingo in the 2012 series, so him being a black kid or purple dragon gangsta turned hero would fit better.
