I'm of the mind that any of the stories created by any of the Mirage staffers are just as legitimate as the others. Jim Lawson, Steve Murphy, Michael Dooney, Dan Berger, and I think a few others all had just as much impact on the stories and evolution of the characters as Eastman and Laird did, and even though Eastman and Laird started it, a huge chunk of the Mirage stuff we all like weren't directly created by them. They were all a team.

Additionally, Laird one time rendered a story in Tales #53 noncanon, despite the fact that it added some much needed depth and reflection to the Vol. 4 narrative, and removing it made the overall story worse. Once again, headcanon and many grains of salt.

I don't think it really matters. Peter Laird flat out said he had no idea what was going on in the later issues of Tales V. 2 and it was just Steve Murphy approving the stories. I remember someone asked him on his blog what he thought of Leonardo kissing Renet in the future and he said he was annoyed by it and said he had no idea that even happened or else he would have put a stop to it.
It was Radical, not Renet.

Exactly.

Yeah same here. I hold A.C. Farley and Carlson/Fosco in the same regard, even if they were never “officially” studio guys.

They, and upon reflection Tristan Jones, definitely deserve honorary "Mirage Crew" status. And I know we were just talking about "fanfiction," but I'd personally also extend that to the Modeen/Dubakov team. Their stuff is one of my few exceptions to my general "no fanfiction" rule, and with involvement from official Mirage staffers, it's MUCH more legitimate than most examples.

To be honest, the Tristan Jones issues of Tales v2 are the only Mirage relaunch books I hold in the same esteem as Volume 1. His work with Paul Harmon was truly exceptional. I'd love to see a collection of his work from IDW one day.

Related to Tristan, but back to the canon debate (because I haven’t beat that dead horse enough yet): if we’re going to say all of Tales was canon, I just remembered that Tales #61 confirmed that the Puzzorelli crime family exists. Clear nod to the Image run.

And while we're at it, Dr. X, who originated in the Image run, later appears in Tales #38 and #50, which also establishes that X was present for the events of TMNT #4 as well.
