That's not so bad... that woman would have been slapped here in Portugal if she said "GRACIAS!" to one of us.

Native Spanish speakers can say it to us because we think they're dumb for not understanding our language at all while we can mostly understand what they say, so we give them a pass for not knowing the word "obrigado". So if you ever end up in Portugal, sdp, you can say "gracias" as long as you make it clear you're Mexican. We'll let that one slide.

Same way German speakers can get away with saying "Dankeschön" in the Netherlands and Flanders but the rest of the world... nah lol

I travel all over and there’s like zero difference in culture anywhere, thanks to the internet. All the same corporate chains everywhere. Most young men are either broccoli cut wiggers or fake blue collar Morgan Wallen clones. Most young women are basic, sucking on their Stanley cups.

The only state I’ve felt has a unique identity is Alaska.

Well, all countries have their own regional differences. I'd not be surprised if a huge country like USA had some significant differences among its regions/states, but are they any bigger than the cultural differences between different German states, different Italian regions, Wallonia and Flanders in Belgium, etc? Hard to "measure" this kind of stuff, anyway.

I understand Americans emphasising the diversity of their own country, but it's not particularly unique. Seems rather standard for the typical "New World" country. Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Mexico, etc. are also all pretty diverse countries themselves.

FWIW, I remember reading somewhere years ago that the most diverse country on Earth might very well Papua New Guinea. Lots of African countries are also extremely diverse. Outsiders might not realise it because they just look at the people in those countries and simply just see a bunch of black people. They don't see that those black people are divided in many different tribes with different customs and languages. There's a reason why Africa has had plenty of civil wars, ethnic massacres and genocides after African countries achieved independence from European countries in the 20th century.

Muslim countries are pretty diverse too. It's quite fascinating, I've seen people in Pakistan who are black as Africans but also white as Europeans, and the cultural practices differ radically from region to region despite the religion being almost entirely Muslim.

I'm currently in the United Arab Emirates for holiday and the country is almost entirely composed of immigrants of different cultures (Indians, Pakistanis, Brits, Filipinos, Russians, Nigerians etc.) and despite the name, only a minority of the population is Arab.

Of course, I'm not a fan of the universal Corporate Culture everywhere. It is always a stain on places with otherwise great people and it makes American people look bad in particular.

Every American immigrant I've met in New Zealand has been a fantastic person, and hates how their country only seems to be known around the world for its corrupt politicians, greedy corporations and never-ending wars. It's a shame that even when they avoid these topics, it gets brought up to them one way or the other.

Funny to read this since recently you mentioned you didn't really like traveling much, nor were very eager to do so in the future.

It does seem like when you move to a foreign country, people see you as a representative or spokesperson for your entire country and its actions. Sounds really unfair. And it's possibly worse for Americans since their nation is on the news 24/7 pretty much anywhere in the world.

Some people just literally cannot "escape" their own nationality when abroad. Americans, Chinese, Indians; to name a few...

To me Europe is like something you learned in history class or see in movies/TV shows set in medieval times or in fantasy like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings or something. I keep having to remind myself these countries still exist in the real world.

Well, when you grow up in a country that's like 25 years old and is made of plastic it's no wonder you find it hard to believe that countries with actual culture, castles, palaces, cathedrals and other classy old buildings exist.
