Netflix's Squid Game

A little gory for my taste, but interesting show. I was surprised it was a series as I originally actually thought it was going to be a game show based on the limited description I saw.

But the real reason I wanted to make a thread was to ask this: Did anyone else watch the English dub (that I've read is supposedly really bad lol) and keep feeling like the old guy sounded like Splinter?? Whoever did the English dub for him (Hideo Kimura?), I really want that guy to voice Splinter someday.

Watched the first two episodes. A pretty decent battle royale so far.

Saw it all out of order, as I sat down when the wife was watching the back half of the episodes, then I sat down and watched the ones I'd missed afterward.

There's a pretty strong anti-capitalism message at play, for one thing. As bad as the games are, it's stressed and re-stressed how much worse it is in the outside/real world (it's actually said out loud at one point) because you have to work for a living, basically. i.e., without capitalism, you wouldn't be forced to rob from your mother and use her debit card to bet on horse races just to survive when the car dealership fires you, etc..

But it's really well told and doesn't pull any punches. It's a bloodbath. Also, the characters are developed really well. In a short amount of time it makes you really care about them, if only to maximize the impact when everyone is slaughtered.

Not really at all.

I never thought I was going to be a fan of this series. Now, I am hooked! Now I know how it feels to read subtitles. Makes me want to learn Hangul. I have English, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, and French in the bag but no Korean. I have to read the subs like a cat trailing a mouse with his eye. lol

Is there a part 2 to this season or did they really just leave it off like that... If it's a long wait for a season 3 to finish this, it better be at least equal in length.

Spoiler:
I was really hoping the father with the sick child was going to have more of a story, but guess not, I think he got knocked off. (Though maybe it was him in the box we saw the lid move...and maybe working #11 will save him.)

And god damn 'purple hair' took WAY too long to just die already. Geezues he's obnoxious.

Btw, Squid Game The Challenge is a fun real-life, family friendly version, for anyone who isn't into the goriness of the series.

Finished the season, it's fun and I'm glad they didn't just repeat everything from the first season. I do think the main cast in Season 1 was better, the bully/bad guy/killer in season 1 was better than the dumb influencer rapper 20 year old as the bad person in the group. I do like the guy and his mother though this time around, and curious what will happen to the pregnant girl. The "crazy lady" in Season 1 was also better than the religious lady this time around.

I knew the guy who joined with them was the guy with the mask from Season 1 (the brother of the police guy who went looking for him), so I knew he would betray them.

I don't really remember any of their names, since all these Asians look alike, so I just know the main character and maybe 2-3 others that stand out and that's it. It's funny watching this makes you realize Koreans are just like us.

They filmed season 2 and 3 back to back so yes. And they've said season 3 will be the series finale.

I did watch The Challenge, too. It was fun enough. The wife and I got fairly wrapped up in it and I think we both accurately predicted the winner. Fun fact: they actually did CGI trickery to make it look like the contestants really fell through those tiles during the one game.

Good to know, hopefully it won't be long before they put up season 3 then.

Saw the first episode of season 2. Man, that Recruiter guy was an O.G. all the way through it. Savage. And he was so polite in season 1, lol...

One thing that doesn't make sense to me, given like 450 something people get killed each game, do the people in the real world just never notice all these people go missing? Their bodies are never found since they're incinerated, and it's not like all the contestants are low-lives or nobodies, some of them are important people in businesses or rappers or youtubers and famous people who are just in debt...and nobody wonders what happened to them after they die?

I mean I know we have to suspend our disbelief that a game like this can run for years/decades and all the people in masks are fine with shooting people too, but I wonder.

Yeah, for sure. And 90% of them are all taken from South Korea, so... there wouldn't be like a serial killer hysteria? Or worse?

The final "season" is out. With the announcement that David Fincher is doing an American Squid Game that is NOT a remake but a sequel/spinoff.

Well that's interesting if true.

I'd even take a new season of the real-life Squid Game Challenge show if they continue to remake PG versions of the games that otherwise look just like the series.

It was already announced. I'm just a little fuzzy if it's a movie or a TV show.

I finished Season 3. It was fine, but weaker then the original season. Unfortunately nothing much with those VIP's or the people who actually run the Squid game was resolved.

Also an American Squid game is literally just...The Hunter Games. If you watched the 4 Hunger Game movies you'll know what to expect. I'm not really interested in that.

Finished it last night. I figured #456 would sacrifice himself to let the young guy and his child live and have a better life, and he did offer it, but no.... the other guy has to be a creep. Most of the remaining players seemed like would-be serial killers if it benefited them.

I'm not seeing firm info that a spin-off or U.S. sequel is coming? Supposedly something reported last Oct, about David Fincher just "eyeing" a potential series, but nothing else said since then. Everything else I'm reading, including recent articles, just sounds like little more then speculation.

Even if their faces weren't seen, most of them felt white... so it's definitely a shame that they didn't delve into the background more of who the heck these foreign people are who are so invested in watching people die and harvesting them. If anything, we need a related spin-off from a different angle to go further into busting them and ending this crime ring.
