Star Trek XIV (2028)

What we know about the new movie:

* It was first announced in November of 2025 as being in the works by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley who will write, produce and direct the new film. Jonathan and John are most known for doing the last Dungeons & Dragons movie, which was largely a comedy. It is mentioned that the movie will not have existing characters.

* In July of 2026 Jonathan Goldstein mentioned at San Diego Comic-Con, in regard to the new movie: "I think we've said in the past... it won't be the characters that you've seen previously in your Star Trek movies. So there will be a new take on that. And I think it'll probably be a little further into the future than we've been before.... what draws us to it is the opportunity to do a different spin." Since he was talking about Trek movies, in particular his own, and not TV shows it is reasonable to assume he means "a little further" after the current Trek movies, which means further than Nemesis. Not further than Academy. So probably around Picard season 3.

* John Francis Daley told Inverse in regard to the new movie, in addition to being inspired by Training Day and Crimson Tide: "I would say it’s really kind of a look at the institution of Starfleet and any institution as a whole that has existed for a long time and what that does. I think the portrayal of Starfleet and the people that work within it have always been generally idealized versions of what the future could be. And while this [script] isn’t a cynical or nihilistic take on it, I think it does acknowledge that there are some bad apples in every institution that can have a strong voice and can really make an impact on that institution and everything it stands for."

That's all we know for now.

--------

So that latest bit of news is fairly concerning. So we're not doing optimistic, hopeful exploration and we're back to corrupt Starfleet? Which was what Patrick Stewart wanted and got for Picard seasons 1 and 2, because he's mad at MAGA and Brexit. Not to mention Into Darkness, Insurrection and VI were all about that already.

Great. So more acknowledging "bad apples" inside the Federation as "hidden evil".

Can we really call this XIV when XI-XIII might as well be a different continuity from I-X?

Regardless of the Kelvin Timeline factor, it's still Spock/Nimoy from the main timeline journeying there. In a marathon of all Trek in not just release order but chronologically, you'd have to end up in Star Trek 2009 after Nemesis.

Or to put it another way, as an example I certainly wouldn't consider Star Trek First Contact to be "Star Trek VIII." If we HAD to give it a numeral it would be "Star Trek: TNG II" but it's often labeled that way and it's not necessarily incorrect.

I authentically don't mind the Kelvin timeline flicks. They aren't what I wanted from new movies as far as the direction they took, and I always hated phaser "bolts" rather than "beams". But at least they did find a way to honor continuity.

On that note, what I'd really like to see is a return to the "Enterprise" cast showing the Romulan War... or the aftermath at this point. Similar to Picard Season 3 would be great.

Actually I wouldn't mind sitting through Enterprise again, although Season 1 is rough to get through, man.

There is still hope for Star Trek: United. Basically an Enterprise sequel show about President Archer and his 4 sons all in different branches of the new Federation. It was pitched before Skydance bought Paramount and was pitched again recently to the new heads. But it sounds like they can't greenlght anything until Kurtzman's contract is finally up. Which depending on what you read they're either waiting out or just extended him juuuust to the end of promotional requirements for SNW season 5 and Academy season 2.

A few bits on it. Confirms it isn't Kelvin Timeline, not that it was really in doubt.

Sounds like it may be set during the Discovery era. They said in the future of the present day (which I assume is Star Trek: Picard, Lower Decks or Prodigy era, basically post-DS9 and Voyager).

But there was like a 900 year gap (I think?) between that and where Discovery is set. But if they keep "The Burn" canon then that was like hundreds of years of no warp travel with everyone just stuck wherever they were in the galaxy.

I doubt it. When they said it'd be "a little bit further in time" originally it was in a conversation specifically about the films.

A 10 year plan including 3 new movies and 4 interconnected series, NO prequels (except Star Trek: United... maybe) and all in the immediately post-TNG/DS9/VOY era.

Scott Bakula is working on a new TV project with his former Enterprise producers, but it's a detective procedural...or so the headlines claim.
