Mary Jane Loves Spider-Man Relaunch Writer Confirmed

Cult favourate Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane will fold with issue twenty, but will be relaunching under a new writer replacing original writer Sean McKeever. That person is Strangers In Paradise writer Terry Moore.

Strangers In Paradise brought new depth to the generic romance/drama, and it's dark storylines and flawed characters are ideal for this title. I suspect theyll be moving on from high school soon to college, where Moore will really get to show what hes made of, and if not, he may be impaitent enough to start early.

I think the first volume ended remarkably well, it didnt tie up enough to be the "final" story for Steve, or thankfully the series (as it will continue)), but it also resolved Peter and MJ's present relationship, in a "true Spider-Man" series of events, both characters seperate love lives were shattered. Steve is also making use of the old Lee/Ditko Gwen Stacy, who was a manipulative b*tch which Peter finally rejects. We even got a sneek peek at Harry's vendetta against Spidey slowly emerging. Nice detail.

I'm glad this series will continue in some form. I read the first two volumes from my library and liked it. Girls need more comics aimed at them, and a series like this is the perfect way for Marvel to make a classic comic book love story appeal to more female readers. (Quesada is an idiot for thinking Spidey & MJ should break up in the regular title. )

I hope my library gets more volumes soon. I can't wait to see what happens with Firestar being introduced.

Quesada is trying, in his own little greedy way, to show that the love story will rise above the conflicts in the Marvel Universe and all of the retconning and will evetually resume, whilst liberating Spidey for a while without stepping on the established timeline (which wont exist for Spidey now, this is his second alternate timeline since House of M), This allows the new writer not to screw up immediatly the way Howard Mackie did and have fun with the character, establishing who he wants Spidey to be, then the timeline will be restored and he can handle the real drama from there

I've heard MJ will become a superhero, a "reward" for her sacrificing her happiness for Peter and her freinds, who will remain an ally and freind of Spideys, thats when I realized this was a short-term "gag" that wont last long, its almost a parody of every fans biggest fear. Quesada knows fans dont want them broken up long-term, and doesnt intend to keep them that way, he just wants to restore Spidey as the fun, wise-cracking character he was prior to CW that the fans missed and relive some of the older Lee/Romita days.

If its long-term, then he truley IS an idiot, because Peter is meant to move forward and mature.

I've heard good things about this series and Strangers In Paradise, although I haven't read either one. But I have been getting tired of Ultimate Spider-Man and the other Spidey books, so I might give this a shot.

You wont regret it, its everything the Ultimate Spidey-Man comics were before Bendis finally started drinking or snapped and made Gwen Stacy Carnage. It doesnt really ellaborate much on MJ's domestic life, which US handled superbly anyway.

This is very much a girl-driven comic, and its never a bad thing when it is. It combines Spidey's relationships with Firestar from Amazing Freinds, the ice cold Gwen from the Lee/Dikito days, Liz is more of a headstrong tomboyish cheerleader, and Peter? Peters the guy the reader not only wants MJ to get with, but they become infuriated when she doesnt go to him directly and runs away to someone else to make Peter happy with whom HE is in love with, but confides in Spider-Man everything that she wants to do for him.

Spidey and Peter are never shown to be the same person, for the sake of inexperianced or casual readers, and to wink at those who are, or even arent but are aware of how it will come together. Theres no Aunt May, JJ, as of yet, because there not even the age to really mingle with them that much.

That's my only real fear. I don't mind a good story that ultimately brings the two chracters closer together because no conflict in a relationship is boring story-wise. I mean I know it won't last forever because nothing ever does in comics even if it takes 20 years, but if this is the direction for the next 5 to 10 years say, it really would be a shame.

I'm just getting sick of Marvel breaking up ALL their best couples in recent years. Scott & Jean (who were my favorite comics couple ever), Reed & Sue, now Spidey & MJ. It's not I trend I'm liking at all.

I'm glad that DC seem to be going the opposite way by getting their best couple together - Green Arrow & Black Canary. Yes, it may be a little contrived, but I blame that on bad editorial mandates that broke them up in the first place. Done correctly, GA/BC could become DC answer to the Fantastic 4, of course the first step is to get rid of Judd Winick and give to book to someone like Andy Diggle or Jennifer Torres instead.

But Spider-Man Loves MJ is definately a high spot in Marvel's current roster of books.

I dont think it is, for all his faults as an editor, Joe detects criticism very quickly. And he fixes them when he knows he's made a mistake. Look at "Sins Past" for example, you will NEVER see Sarah and Gabrielle again. Other cases of acknowledging bad decisions from Marvel include "Spider-Man: Chapter One" Hahahahaha, nah, never happened. Clone Saga? Marvel only recoverd from that when JMS took over and the movie came out at the same time.

Marvel respect their fans for the most part, but Quesada doesnt seem to listen to them when he comes up with these ideas, he just listens after he's blown an oppertunity.

I don't get the opposition to aging Peter Parker. He's married, fine. Just leave him in his late 20's forever if you want to do that. There's no reason at the moment why they should worry about him being too old. We have Ultimate Spider-Man now for a younger Peter, and now the MJ book too.
