I Want A "Ninja Turtle Babies" Cartoon Show

I do.

I want it to be like the "Muppet Babies" was when I was a kid.

I want the Turtles to look like they did when Dario Brizuela drew them in Tales #38. And I want them to go on zany and funny adventures every week where they learn a valuable life lesson at the end. And Michelangelo makes a lot of bad puns that drive the others up the sewer walls.

I want it to be super-popular with little kids now, and with their parents (who grew up on the original toon).

I want it, because my gut tells me that the CSI-DARK KNIGHT-OMG-REALISTIC-SUPERHEROES-FRANK MILLER-FOREVER!!!1111 backlash is coming.

People want to have fun again.

(I also want an uber-gritty, early Mirage-style film, but that's not what we're talking about, here).

I want a cartoon called TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLE BABIES, and I want it to be the most popular thing in the world.

Who's with me?

Sorry buddy, I can't agree.

As much as I love the occasional toddler turtles story, it needs to stay occasional (and the more recent animated ones have kinda failed). The last thing the franchise needs right now is to go the "babies" route. I'll worry about Dark Knight "backlash" after TMNT makes a real attempt to be serious again.

I'm sure you're right, Rose (History's taught me that you usually are ).

I just want more turtles stories that leave me feeling "blessed" and redeemed, you know? "Iron Man" left me leaving the theater feeling that way.

Whereas both of the last Batman movies (much as I loved them) left me shuffling out the theater feeling condemned and damned by fate.

And as much as I appreciate that kind of work, when done well (like in the Batman movies), I don't necessarily enjoy it.

That first Turtles film (he said, putting on his old man pants ) really mixed the two pretty much perfectly. There was humor. There was seriousness. There was great character development.

Like everyone else, I totally loved it.

I'm glad I didn't post my original alt-turtle idea for you though, Rose:

Spoiler:
I Want A "Ninja Turtle Friends" Television Show

I do.

I want it to be like the "Friends" show was when I was a a teen.

I want the Turtles to look like they did whenever Michael Dooney draws them. And I want them to hang out at a trendy little coffee shop ("The Sewer"), where they can talk to one another about their problems with life, their jobs, and love.

Here's my rough idea for a cast:

April O'Neil: Monica
Shadow: Rachel
Leonardo: Ross
Donatello: Phoebe
Michelangelo: Chandler
Raphael: Joey

Splinter would be the guy who runs the coffeeshop, and Casey could be one of Monica's crazy ex-boyfriends.

I want this show to be super-popular with 30-somethings, and with their kids (who'll think the characters are just cool).

I want it, because my gut tells me that the CSI-DARK KNIGHT-OMG-REALISTIC-SUPERHEROES-FRANK MILLER-FOREVER!!!1111 backlash is coming.

People want to have fun again. And it's always fun to see pampered people in places you don't live complaining about the superficial problems of their fake, TV-world lives.

I want a show called TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLE FRIENDS, and I want it to be the most popular thing in the world.

Who's with me?

A few things to weigh in on here:

I really do enjoy the dark n' gritty, Miller-esque trend, if its juxtaposed against a good, deep story. Movies like The Dark Knight and graphic novels like The Dark Knight Returns are champions of good writing. Yes, they're dark, but that darkness is used as a vehicle for deeper messages. If its just a grit-fest, I couldn't care less (unless its incredibly stylish, because I'm a sucker for that). Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the comic, has always been a deeper series. It's had its dark moments, but its always used them in great ways. City At War is both gritty and incredibly deep. This is something I enjoy, and something I'd like to be introduced to the general public.

Now, I'm not opposed to campy fun either. I think a child-oriented Baby Turtle show could be great. I simply don't think it should happen before the public can swallow dark turtles. The Turtles need to be accepted to the point where they can, like Batman, have a dark movie in theatres and a children's show on television. If Baby Turtles arrived before the public was more aware of the Mirage versions, all hope for that acceptance would be lost, and my favorite stories would continue to go unnoticed.

Well, here's what a baby turtle looks like.

Of course that leaves a few other problems. Would Splinter be a baby rat, or a baby human? When they fight with Shredder, are they allowed to take time out to have their diapers changed? Would the Punk Frogs be tadpoles? What about Krang, Rocksteady or Bebop?

W.B were way ahead of you there. Why else would they make the next Batman animated series the polar opposite of The Dark Knight and go with a tounge-in-cheek Silver Age format?

I wouldnt mind a return to the fun kind of television myself (in a rebooted series of course). I've seen a slow uprise in this again, the new Transformers series is exactly the kind of fun you're looking for, so it wouldnt hurt.

Have you discussed this with others where you work?

Baby TMNT is cute, like Baby Looney Toons.

Plus, how can you "baby" in the literal sense of the word a "teenage ninja"? It doesn't make sense with the title.

A Baby TMNT series? Muppet Babies was awesome....Baby Looney Tunes not so much. There were some things still about Muppet Babies that never made sense:

1: Robin was a tadpole while Kermit was like 2. Something that's never been touched upon in the live action stuff.

2: Skeeter was never mentioned again after the Muppet Babies and Muppet Kids (a series of books where they're pre-teens). Yeah it was revealed in 1993 what happened to her (dissapeared on an expidition in the Amazon Jungle) but they could at least have mentioned her once or twice.

I found a pic of a live action Skeeter!!!

3: Scooter is an idiot but was smart when he was younger. What happened? His mom is a parrot...he should be super smart still. Maybe we should blame his rich uncle (You know...the biggot of an uncle who once maintained the Muppet theatre? He's dead now according to a deleted scene on the Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie DVD...)

4: Nanny and Aunt Franny. Are they still alive?? Would be nice to see em live action.

A Baby TMNT thing would be too weird. April would probably end up in the Nanny role or Aunt Franny.

As for the TMNT friends thing. Leonardo as Ross and Shadow as Rachel?? That's just wrong on so many levels. Shadow is their niece!

You can say that again. I wonder if Raph and Mikey would fight over a blankie.

We almost did... and considering how the Baby turtles have been portrayed in "Incredible Shrinking Serling" and "Fathers and Sons" I pray it never comes to that.

And honestly, other than A Pup Named Scooby Doo and Tiny Toons (more of a next generation cartoon than true Baby-fication), they were pretty bad. Yo Yogi had a couple moments, I agree... but Baby Looney Tunes was almost a character for character ripoff of Muppet Babies.

Besides, Muppet Babies appeal was more than just seeing them as non-canonical child versions of themselves... it's what they did... their imaginations running wild and getting into mild peril (something parents and psychologists would shun today, since kid's shows are just... well they're the pits now). It took great writing and great music to make the show what it was... not just "ooh, look! The characters are babies."

I mean, who can deny the coolness of this:

If we're going the Fun TMNT route, I'd much rather see an Archie like series... or even one like the old cartoon. But NO Babyfication... or making an adult cartoon show that's a tepid Family Guy/ Aqua Teen Knockoff.

I wouldn't want one, flashback episodes could be cool though.

However I wouldn't mind another comedy TMNT cartoon like the OT. I love dark and gritty turtles but I also enjoy the lighter side of turtles.
