TMNT: Smash-Up

I just picked this up, the PS2 version, for $20 at Wal-Mart. I didn't think I'd have this game so soon, but I'll definitely be putting Persona 3 on hold to play this tonight.

Yeah, it's difficult because the picture on the TV screen tends to warp and flicker, giving you only a few split seconds to make out a clear image. Also, I've had a hard time getting a look at it from a good angle, since the camera usually gives you a side view. I've tried pausing it when standing close to zoom in and catch it, but I still can't be certain. That'd be something I'd like to ask the level designer to confirm.

I played the story mode one time through last night, with Leonardo, and...wow. Talk about, um...short. I expected something much longer and on an epic scale. Ah well, I'll play it through with Mikey tonight probably (normally in TMNT games I play them in the classic order of Leo, Mikey, Donny, and Raph). I can't say I'm liking the game near as much as I thought I would but I guess it's ok since I got it so cheap.

At least it being the PS2 copy I don't have to deal with Rabbids that just do not belong here.

Er, well I'm not really sure if that's the best to call it, but it's what I call it. See, that's the order I'm most used to the character names being listed, I think that was the order used most in the original toon, not sure. But nowadays I see a lot more use of 'Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo' rather than 'Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael'.

It's nothing that matters, just a preference of mine and a silly one at that.

Hey, you're right! The thought had occurred to me that it might be the same guy, but I hadn't popped in the DVD of the movie in a while, so I didn't check out what he looked like. Yeah, I guess that makes sense since the game favors the movie so much already. Too bad.. looks like Ubisoft missed another opportunity to cross reference the TMNT multi-verse.

Thanks man. I have various scenes of the movie burned in my mind from doing the Casey and April custom figures. That's why I remembered about that guy, And I agree, it was a wasted opportunity.

Man...I saw this for 14.00 today at Best Buy... And mind you I don't hate on Turtles often...

I gave Stryker a ring and asked if the price was A) worth it, or B) a sign of how not-good it is.

He stated it was a sign (since he owns it).

I passed, but this might be one of the quickest/most dramatic price drops in the video game community.

It's definitely a pretty bad game, but for 14 bucks... I say grab it anyway if you're curious.

I played it for the first time today at a friend's. It's a really shameless Smash Bros. rip-off and the mechanics are absolute sh*t. Great job, Ubisoft.

I thought it was pretty fun?

Not to pointlessly repeat myself, but while it's far from a top-tier game, it's also far from the worst. As a bit of mindless action fun, I was pretty satisfied! It's not worth $50-60 by any stretch, but I think it's worth what it's going for now. (Just my opinion.)

Well considering its made by a team of people who worked on Smash bros....are you surprised its similar?

A game doesn't have to be top-tier to be good or enjoyable, though. It can't directly compete with, say, Uncharted 2, but it's an entirely different kind of game. For what it is, I think it's pretty good, and aside from the roster I didn't find much to complain about.

And again: anyone calling it "terrible" or "a turd" probably hasn't suffered through some of the truly awful games that have seen release (Superman 64, Wand of Gamelon and Atari's E.T. spring immediately to mind). Just a little perspective is all - if you didn't like it, you didn't like it, but let's not exaggerate.

AGAIN. Just because it's not the WORST THING EVER, does not mean it doesn't deserve to get trashed.
