Classic Ep Talkback: Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer the Universe

Episodes #82 "Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer the Universe"

I just love this episode, probably because I'm such a big Godzilla fan!

Even the presence of Zach cannot deter the awesomeness of seeing the TMNT going up against a fully functional "Gorganzola" robot. Can you imagine how difficult it would be to make real monster movies if the directors decide to build the monsters to scale rather than resort to more traditional methods?

I was amazed of how Bebop and Rocksteady didn't answer to Shredder about the anxiety ray because he was just pushing them too hard. Then they use the ray on Shredder and Krang.

That anxiety ray is a lot like the rays that look like remote controls in The Turtles and The Hare, only the anxiety ray actually works on mutants.

Yeah, it's great! But I never really understood the "Universe" angle, since they pretty much just took over the city. Maybe it was just a clever "Flash Gordon" spoof?

Anyway, I did a parody of this episode, if anybody's interested:

It's just a title, to make it sound more great, since the "Universe" is everything known to man. "Bebop and Rocksteady Conquer New York City" would sound much lamer.

It does make it sound better, no doubt. It just seems like every episode title of the OT is an homage to either a literary or pop-culture source. Television writers just LOVE doing that kind of thing. Take the Real Ghostbusters or the Disney Afternoon shows (Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Talespin, etc.) as examples of that trend.
