Case of the Hot Kimono
I'm rewatching the original series again and just recently saw this episode and to my my surprise the sensors let a big one slip by them.
In case you need a reminder, this is the episode where someone is stealing Kimonos from all over the city looking for a map. April's detective aunt is also in the episode. Anyways, at one point the turtles decide to set a trap by running a commercial for a fake kimono store to lure the crooks and the sign on the store is Kal's Krazy Kimonos. KKK. I can't believe they slipped that in there, it must have been intentional. They did something similar on the simpsons once with Krusty the Klown Komeback special episode, but that was intentional and since it was on Fox I don't think they even cared. Did anyone else notice this in the TMNT episode? Are there any other episodes where things like this slipped by? |

I probably noticed a tad bit, but didn't care THAT much. I'm sure the writers just wanted something catchy to go with the word 'kimono.' And I'm sure there are other episodes with innuendos towards some symbolism, but I wouldn't consider this action "INTENTIONAL." Come on, it's a kids cartoon and they were just improvising ideas.

I seriously doubt that was intentional. It's not like Don was burning a cross and yelling "KKK". They didn't even say KKK in the episode. Just because a bunch of fat hicks 100 years ago decided to use those three letters to represent their ignorance doesn't mean they can never be put together again for a name without ill intention.

I never even noticed about the three K's back then.
As for the episode itself when I look at it now. Considering that Splinter had that kimono ever since he was human, it is pretty weird to have some treasure map in his kimono. I may be pushing logic button too hard but even if he were to have a treasure map in his kimono, the treasure would have been buried somewhere in Japan and not off the coast of New York. But it's only a show and I am simply pointing out a bit of logic. |

Yes, this is the first time I noticed that too. It doesn't bother me. I remember it being a big deal on the Simpsons in one episode but that's another topic.
This episode was a big step because other than "The Maltese Hamster" which had gangsters but involved Shredder, this is the first one to have the Turtles battling other crooks besides Shredder. The Rat King doesn't count there because other than the rats he was a one-man operation. |

In the first season of the original cartoon, there are a few instances where raphs "moans" in battle are dubbed with April's. It's funny as hell, me and my friend just kept rewinding and watching it. I want to say the funniest one is the one where they are on the docks and they fight shredder down there around some crane thing (bear with me I can't remember). The dub was more than once in different episodes, so I can see the crew doing it on purpose, because it's funny as hell to see Raph get kicked in the chest and hear a "uhghhhh" that's clearly a woman. Anyone else notice this?

@spitfire, believe it or not the kkk is one of the top 10 organizations in the world in terms of number of members. Its huge, which is kind of sad when you think about it. And the letters have become synonymous with anti-black movements so it seems pretty weird to put that in there when you could be inviting trouble.
Lets not forget that this was a kids show and they wanted to keep it clean if possible. That's why it was such a shock when I saw it, I just can't believe that it was approved. This sort of stuff happens all the time though, anyone remember the original little mermaid cover? One of the buildings was a giant penis. Or the ikea catalogue with the dog? But getting away from just the episode in question, I always find it interesting when these things come up because sometimes its an honest mistake but sometimes its also intentional. I just remembered an old issue of batman where the joker keeps mentioning how he will cause batman to make a boner. Except back then boner was just a word for mistake or blunder, but it sounds really funny when you read it now. And regarding the map, it actually pointed to a location in japan not New York. |

Yeah, apparently the grandpa's head in Hey Arnold is shaped like a wang when viewed from the side and Rocko...well, Rocko had a lot of innuendo. >_>

The KKK are first and foremost, an American thing. It's not a global organization. While there may be people claiming to be part of the KKK in a handful of European countries, it would be a tiny, tiny amount. There are believed to be around 8,000-10,000 actual members of the KKK currently and the number of actual practicing KKK members (As in attending rally functions or making it known that they're part of the KKK) is even smaller. In the 1920's there were millions of KKK members, but that KKK was much more of a political party than what most people associate the Klan with. When the KKK began to get more violent and involved in hate crimes (they weren't called a such then) the party began to lose members in droves. |
