So What Does Everyone Think Of April's Origin?

For me, it's the first time in the series I've thought "now this is really stupid..."

I'm indifferent toward it to be honest. I guess I must be odd, since I had no extreme reaction to it either way.

Mirage April is probably my least favorite version of April, so I guess it doesn't matter. April is so minor in the Mirage universe, even compared to the Turtles, that it doesn't really matter.

I'm glad though the other April's in the various cartoons/movies won't have this origin though. But Mirage April? Eh, she was never interesting.

I don't mind, but I do wonder how many of the "Aprils" that have survived in Kirbyland

That is a very good question. I never thought about that tell you pointed it out. Here is the real question though, do all the drawings go to the same place or are the separate places depending on the artist?

Didn't like the origin at all; thought it completely took away April's humanity, which was the whole point of her character to begin with: this wonderful, accepting individual who was the first human to befriend the Turtles and Splinter, who became a part of their family because of her love for them. And I personally don't think she's an uninteresting character: she drives issue 11, which is one of the finest TMNT stories. I found her fascinating in "City at War", following where she goes and the changes in her life, and she's a very pivotal character to the series, in my opinion. To just $#!7 all over her like that... I can't understand it. Laird's nutty.

This. I just though it was a cheap ploy to "make her more interesting". But i think it just sort of fell on its face. It's interesting but at that same tie it takes so much more from that character than it creates.

I bet Laird got inspired from M. Night Shyamalan's twists

Rather than the typical b!7ching we do regarding April's origin, let's flip this around:

How would you have approached the origin issue? It's been awhile since I read it, but wasn't the context of the story set amidst April's hospitalization? What events would you have used if the basis for that issue was for it to be primarily prose?

Just off the top of my head I could see Robyn finding April's diary and her recounting some of her earlier meetings with the Turtles, and possibly some insight as to her original feelings toward Casy and how he "may be a childish arrogant asshole but underneath that gruffness lies a cute little boy" or something.

I probably would have used that issue to expand her character rather than redefine her origins. Allow her to express her anguish that led into her leaving during City at War, how she felt about losing the antique store, hell even how she may haev minored in journalism during college and appreciates Michelangelo's secret love of prose and how she's been helping his technique and have her comment on the progess he's made oover time and how creative and talented he is.

That's just a few thoughts that popped in my head. What are some of your's?

I don't really have a problem with the way the origin was told, I just hated the origin. And I too don't want to spend alot of time bitching about the origin, cause it drives me nuts I hate it soo much. But I do want to say that not only do I hate it cause it takes April's humanity away, but it makes for an awful big f'n coincidence that mutant turtles would meet and be best friends with a drawing. What next, Casey is actually an undercover Utrom who lost his memory and thinks he's human?

I liked it beats the typical adoption story how she never fit in, or the child that never had friends.

Question is, why would she need to be adopted (if Laird hadn't done the "her blood doesn't match her sister's" thing), and why would she have had to grow up not having friends? Way I always imagined it, she likely had a fairly good (human) social life before meeting the Turtles, whereupon her life is completely flipped upside down—especially after her apartment/store is burned down. I always imagine her friends being kind of suspicious of her, why she's suddenly become so secretive about her whereabouts and activities, why she's seemingly secluded herself.

I figured she had a pretty typical life when she wasn't present in the books; after all, she did have the apartment building to manage so she had tenants to deal with. She was a normal person, doing mundane normal things and having normal social interactions when the Turtles weren't around. Remember the Halloween party the Turtles crashed? I don't think Mike caused much racket when he lived in her building so no one was none the wiser about his presence.

Plus, think of all the cool people she met because of the Turtles! The Justice Force, Renet, etc. Her closest friends and relatives knew about the Turtles, so there would be no need to be secretive.

If anything, her life was enriched by knowing the Turtles.

(Note: I don't know what happened to my original post, so I think I left out a part when retyping this.)

Back when Peter Laird promised a major character would be killed off in TMNT #10, I figured it would be April, given her medical predicament at the time. Instead we found out she was an ink drawing brought to life by a magical crystal.

Looking back...
Yeah, should have just killed her off.

I actually hated how it was done more then the origin itself. I don't mind the idea and it's a nice tie in. The thing that I disliked was all the cockroach crap. Them mating and stuff. Too out there and really unnecessary.

I could write a disertation in response to the topic in question, as I'm so tempted to do, but I think I'd be better off with a more concise reply:

And that's all I've got to say about that.
