Bad comparison... Transformers is way bigger than TMNT. They have Transformer conventions every year, and there's only been one TMNT con. Ever.

And Transformers is not as big as either of those franchises, yet the movie series is/can be more popular.
Wait.....TMNT is a classic franchise and Superman....Isn't?

Even comparing Superman and TMNT in terms of impact on culture is ludicrous. 70 years of success in comics, movies and TV vs. MAYBE 10 years of success in movies and a TV show.

Did I say Superman wasn't a classic franchise or compare their impact? No. I even mention how TMNT doesn't have the iconic reach franchises like Superman and other superheroes do. You obviously missed the point of my post completely which is recognizability != Box Office yet you are quick to insult others with your erroneous assumptions..

the new wave of TMNT has not even started. How many people saw Iron Man without ever reading a comic? Or watching the animated television show? The new comic and new cartoon will hook in a new audience by itself.

Also, there are alot more casual TMNT fans then of the Avengers. Unless you were a kid in the 70's, the Avengers will not have the same nostalgia or retro factor that the TMNT will have to almost all current movie goer demographics. Even if you didn't read any Turtle comics or even remember the show all that well, the familiarity to the product will have the same effect as Thor has to movie goers or Captain America. I doubt that only comic book fans are going to see those movies. I doubt that the Marvel Movie fans are the only ones who are going to see those movies. They look cool and the movie goers already 'know' the characters. Already good selling point. Now all Viacom has to do is make a good movie and they could break box office records like New Line did with the first one.

I live in Australia, there's pretty much no comic book industry, but ninja turtles are more popular because their on t.v. and in movies, Avengers haven't been anytime recently, I'm assuming they're much more popular in the US.

Now that I think about it though, all the people who like the Iron man movie franchise (Which is bigger than TMNT at the moment, as others have said) are also going to watch Avengers, along with people who liked Thor and Captain America.

I still doubt that will stop tmnt doing really well.

Pretty much everyone I know. Just saying.

Then again maybe it's the Australia thing again.

Nope. That's a universal concept known as trendiness.

How big a cult following a thing has isn't really a good indicator of how much mass media appeal/potential a thing has. There's big huge Highlander conventions every couple of years since forever and those movies barely make any money at all.

Good point, I wasn't really thinking. I'm pretty sure The Big Lebowski still has conventions lol.

But regardless, Transformers is a bigger property than TMNT.

That's because even Highlander fans know most of the movies are crap.

Not hardly. - $35 million dollar production budget, - $25 million dollar marketing budget... that's only about a $35 million dollar profit.

Which 2? I need to see 3, but 2's pretty bad and End Game and the Source are god-awful, IMO.

I can tell you...

The Avengers have never been that big even amongst comic buyers. In the 60's they were vastly outsold by Fantastic Four and beyond that they were vastly outsold by the X-Men. They're books have always been C-List at best, they've always been kept going by the fact that it was practicaly sacriledge to cancel a 60's Lee & Kirby creation. At times Marvel preferred to cancel better selling titles in hopes readers would flock to Iron Man, Thor and the like instead.

It's only recently that they've become big amongst comic buyers by doing what DC has always done and have their most popular heroes (Spidey, Wolverine) as well as second tier and a few cult favourites be part of the team and give them all an edgier makeover as well as the have them be the center of all their big events.

In terms of the general public they're a nonentity. Understandable as they've never had a big mass media presence. I'd definitely say the TMNT currently has more marquee value than the Avengers.

Of course I admit that means little to how well they will do in comparison. Iron Man wasn't well known by the general public but his movie came out of nowhere for a lot of people and that was because it had a good cast, good movie all round and was incredibly well marketed. The Avengers will also have the benefit of being a continuation of two (arguebly three big movies).

OK...seriously. You are going to say with a straight face and without a hint of irony, that the Avengers, a book featuring Marvel's heavy weights like Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man is a smaller/less followed franchise than TMNT? Man...this fandom is kinda warped.

Paramount should do some direct to DVD flicks on the Mirage Turtles at maybe pg-13 ratings to really get in an older crowd back to the turtles. couldnt hurt.

That would've been true like twenty years ago. As much as I love the turtles, they aren't "hip" anymore. Sure, they still have a big fanbase, but let's face it, TMNT doesn't hold a candle to Marvel & DC superheroes in terms of popularity nowadays.

Outside of a few heroes the mainstream doesn't really care about most superheroes, Spiderman, Batman, X-Men, Iron Man and not many more after those sadly. Thor and Captain America have to prove themselves. Everyone knows who the Hulk is but it failed twice at making a splash in the movies and he hasn't really had much luck animated wise either.

A whole generation of kids grew up with the turtles, you guys are mistaking actual fans with casual fans. The transformers films did not make huge amounts of money because of the hardcore fans it had, but most people grew up with some form of transformers and wanted to see a movie of the show they watched as a kid. Most superhero films wish they could perform like transformers and most of those are more recognizable than Transformers.

Marvels take on the Justice League, except it lacks the biggest Marvel characters Spiderman/Wolverine so think of it like Justice League without Batman/Superman (Yes, I'm aware of New Avengers). There's a new Avengers cartoon, its pretty decent you should check it out if you like Marvel. And don't feel bad, I didn't know who the Avengers were until like 6 years ago.

The 2012 movie has a lot of hype among comic book fans but we don't know yet if the mainstream is interested. Marvel hopes that both Thor and Captain America movies coming out this summer are going to be pretty big on the same level as Iron Man. Iron Man was a relatively unknown hero outside of comic fans and after the movie he became a household name. If Thor and Caps are able to make their movies as big as Iron Man then the Avengers is an easy sell since its a team up of Iron Man/Thor/Caps, if they both fail then Avengers might be a risky movie for Marvel since Iron Man alone would be the main reason for the average person to go see the movie.
