Dooney's "Masks"

I just got these two issues recently and read them a couple of days ago.

Great art, good story, but a couple of nitpicks.

Where did Chote come from? I suppose it's obvious that he was a beneficiary of Savanti's magic, but who the hell trained him to be a Samurai.

Also, did anyone else find it corny how Raph inadvertently started the Foot Clan? I thought it was kinda cool when this same thing happened in the OT... but that was the OT.

Anyways, discuss!

I kinda liked it, it's not like Raph will ever learn he started the Foot clan inadvertently anyway. But yea, maybe a tad cheesy.

I am curious about Chote's background though. Then again, I am a sucker for character development in TMNT.

Raph inadvertently started the Foot in the old cartoon as well? What episode was that?

Not Raph, but the TMNT and Splinter started it on purpose.

It was in "The Legend of Koji", season 7.

I was a bit disappointed that Chote got transported to the time and place of Gizmo but the thread was never followed up on in any Gizmo comics.

And if its any consolation to those who dislike the story, "Masks" may or may not be retconned out anyway by "Spinal Tapped", since the two stories contradict each other.

Anyhow, I liked it. I never had a problem with Raph unknowingly founding the Foot Clan. Cheesy, yeah, but c'mon. A LOT of cheesy **** has happened in these comics.

Yeah, they even said Dooney was gonna follow up on Chote...

I've never read spinal tapped, it's from the second edition of the Tales Volume 1 collection right?

And you're right lol, I was just pointing it out because I've never seen anyone else talk about it on here.

It's my favorite story of Volume 1 besides the Shredder stuff.

I always got the feeling this where the third movie was based off of.

I loved "Masks". Chote was awesome. Granted, I only found the story a few years back and realized one of my favorite figures was based on a Mirage character so I was pretty stoked and not disappointed by how badass he was!

I really dig these issues, great art, fun story. And I thought it was pretty cool that Raph started the Foot when I first read it.

Now for cheese in the 'serious' TMNT:

Something about that dialogue there always bugged me. Great art though!

If I had to choose between Masks and Spinal Tapped, Masks wins hands down. Spinal Tapped was fun enough, but it kinda doesn't flow very well in the scheme of things.

Ahh, can someone clarify what "Spinal Tapped" is for me? I've been thinking about it since I first read the title and can't for the life of me figure out which issue it is.

It was a bonus story included only in the 2007 Tales of the TMNT Vol. 1 Collection TPB.

It linked up with the new frontispieces and the epilogue also made exclusively for that collection.

I don't think there was ever any conscious decision to nix this story from continuity. If there's any fudging, I'm sure it was just simple oversights.

Corny? No. Poignant? Yes.

I'm a fan of "whatever happened, happened" theory of time travel - in other words, doing things in the past don't change the present/future - that is, there is no butterfly effect - but whatever you do in the past, has already happened to begin with, thus there is no adverse effect. Predestination.

The fact that Raph started the Foot Clan in this way really resonated with me.

I enjoy that theory in fiction but it's difficult to subscribe to in reality.

I would tend to think whenever you go back in time, you're kind of just starting a brand new "branch" in time. And the business with if your younger self or mom or dad dies in the past, that you suddenly vanish like a ghost is nonsense.

Yeah, that's the most realistic, if we're gonna talk about realistic time travel

Ahh.. Tales Volume 1... awesome, thanks. I think I actually have that. Done by Lawson?

....I'll stick with "Masks" being 'canon' if I have a choice. >.>

You know what? Now I think it's totally awesome that Raph started the Foot... because he eventually becomes The Shredder!

How cool is that? Wonder if Carlson had noticed that...

This is one of those issues I had wanted the 4kids series to adapt before it got canceled.

It saddens me to realize that this arc is forgotten because City at War overshadowed it.

I'm pretty sure PL wouldn't consider this canon if he was asked, but it obviously doesn't matter now.

I thought it was cool anyway, but adding that fact definitely makes it doubly dope.
