I'm prone to agree with Nines. I'm taking this "article" with a HUGE grain of salt, as they make the same "Krang was an Utrom" slip that Tiger Claw made earlier. Krang was an Utrom all of once, like gobo mentioned, in the daily comic strips, and those mingled Archie origins for Leatherhead with Mirage characters and a decidedly Fred Wolf feel...well later on anyway.

Besides I read their "source" article as well and I see no mention of inter-dimensional Turtles, just that in the FW series Krang himself was an inter-dimensional being.

The more I read the less outraged I get because it all just seems like either a ploy to get people talking, or people who have no idea what they're saying being allowed to talk like what they know is 100% true.

It's amazing how things can change in only 10 years. Ten years ago, if someone said, "the new animated Shredder would become an Utrom" or "Mirage April was an artificial being," the proper response would have been "you're crazy."* If the alien Turtles come to be, then, logically speaking, aren't the producers taking this subtle and gradual revising that has been occuring over the past decade to its absolute conclusion? I don't know how to word this properly, but the direction is becoming apparent that someone, be it Laird or Bay or whomever, believes it is a good idea to make the core characters even more fantastic or bizarre or outerworldly than the norm or the franchise's original standard, so, from their point of view, why not alien Turtles? (I'm not counting the IDW/Nicktoon de-aging of April or Casey into my thesis, but that shouldn't be ignored, either.)

The alien Turtles re-branding is still absurd, but when one adds the Utrom Shredder or Mirage April's new identity into the equation, it almost makes a modicum of sense. Of course, the likely answer is "change for the sake of change," or everyone in a re-vamping or re-packing mood, these days, "so, hey, why not?"

*I'm not familiar with what happened with Mirage April, as I read little of Vol. 4. So, you guys can refresh my memory.

The only reason Utrom Shredder worked is the backstory was well written and they kept the Oroku Saki persona around through Season 3. That and the show did have a human Oroku Saki in the past.

Oh, it worked quite well, but it's still a drastic change. I'm not asserting change is bad, as some of them can work out fine, as you pointed out with Ch'rell. I'm only observating a subtle pattern that has emerged over the past 10 years, the space or alien Turtles can be interpreted as the next step in that progress.

If they continue this with, say, Casey Jones is secretly working for Bishop or the MIB, then go into panic or be amused, whichever. Because, apparently, "let's make everyone into aliens."

But if it had been revealed that Shredder was an Utrom from the get go people would have flipped. That's the point. Because we saw it play out before learning it people were okay with it.

I guess it'd be a lot easier for me to find the energy to get worked up about this if there had actually ever been a good TMNT movie. One sort of OK one, then a freefall in quality from there, movie after movie.

Agreed, good storytelling certainly downplayed on the potential backlash. Which begs the side question, are the writers going to put the alien origin upfront with some big teaser sequence or we find out at the middle or end of the movie, "you're aliens"? The first movie waited with the origin exposition until April first met Splinter, right? At least, that would give the audience some time to brace itself.

Edit: Besides, it could be worse -- they could become vampires, instead. Sad to say, I'm only half-kidding.

If they are aliens. That is what I'll have to tell myself.

The problem is its a movie that he general public sees.

Why instill in the minds of the common folk that the Turtles are aliens?
Especially when the new cartoons and comics do nothing of the sort.

It is a blemish on the franchise that will never die down just like the Venus girl turtle jokes.

Well, if they stick with this alien thing, it's not really gonna surprise anyone when they're watching the film. It's the very first thing that has been announced, so I don't think it really matters how it is revealed.

And yet all of them beat the boring prospect of straight up adapting the one-note comics mate.

2003 TMNT tried it. Niche audience.

Your work doesnt work. Suck it.

Yeah, but Frank Welker was invoked in the sequels.

Ah, but you are forgetting about 4Kids Krang.

We only saw him for like two seconds, and it was more of a joke than anything else.

I don't disagree, as today's audiences are quite savvy. However, not everyone has a computer or would follow the day-by-day details like we would. Depending on who you ask, most casual fans tend to go with their own default media version of the Turtles, and that's that. At least, that's my personal experience prior to joining the forum talking.

And we now or will soon have a new and younger generation of TMNT fans to grow up with the Nicktoon/Viacom film as their first media impression, as we did in past generations with the 87 and '03 series and the respective films. Fortunately, there are almost 30 years-plus of other Turtle media, so it isn't like the next generation doesn't have other options, and "huh, so they aren't always space turtles, after all."

Or to go with TurtleMaster4's advice, "view it as part of the Multiverse and leave it at that." Which is how I'll likely interpret the film, anyway (besides being, as Andrew rightfully observed, "a toy fiesta").

I've said it once and I'm saying it again:

I'm reserving my thoughts until I know more about these Transmutant Ninja Turtles. >_>
