Me: TMNT will reach a wider audience than GOTG.
Me: who are kids going to choose?
Me: GOTG is unknown, TMNT isn't!

Who's laughing now!!!
After 7 days:
GotG: $134,390,839
TMNT: $89,242,236

I have to add that I did not find anything "amazing" about GOTG. It's mediocre at best for me. The movie had way too many problems, and that really kept me from enjoying it like everyone else.

GotG has reached a wider audience than TMNT, though. Its opening weekend was $29m bigger, and it's predicted to be very nearly tied with TMNT for this weekend even though it's been out a week longer. It opened much bigger and has dropped slower.

Getting #1 for a few specific weeks doesn't mean it's more successful. It's all in the actual dollar amounts, and Guardians easily wins that. Hitting #1 means nothing more than bragging rights. The bean-counters only care about the hard numbers.

I won't be overly surprised if Guardians ultimately takes home the larger profit, once both have left all theaters globally, however it's nice to see the Turtles at least grab the top seat, defend that position, and present a challenge to Guardians and make them work a bit for those earnings. lol

Well, hey... me too.

But they both got sequels, so clearly they're both considered successful by their studios. Look at it that way: if you enjoyed both movies, there's more to come.

Gotta say... a James Gunn movie taking in more domestically than a Michael Bay movie, and considering it released in traditionally-softer month? That makes me smile.

It really does show the strength of the Turtles brand right now I guess.

Guardians is a really big runaway hit with a bunch of critical praise everywhere and Disney's full marketing might behind it and Turtles still manages to be a pretty good success right in it's shadow.

I'm happy both movies are doing well. Even if the movie is not everyone's taste or quality, it does introduce a wider audience and help solidify the future for TMNT, and I hope it trickles down to helping the show and the comic.

I'm happy for GOTG because it was a great movie with a solid cast. I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable I found it.

It makes me wonder how much diversity there is in ticket gross vs income gross. Children's tickets vs. 3D vs. Imax. I'm sure that is really helping GOTG.

That's a great point. Imagine if TMNT did get critical praise...the numbers could be pretty staggering, much moreso than now

GOTG is only going to slightly make more than transformers 4 domestically.

A TMNT movie doesn't have to get lots of good reviews from movie critics to bring in a lot of people, the transformers movies didn't have to.

I actually think if it just came out in July it would have cleaned up. I kinda think Paramount underestimated how popular the characters are at the moment.

That or they really thought Hercules was going to be gigantic.

The fact that this is even a possibility is incredible.

Uh, last I looked, GOTG is kicking TMNT in the overall BO race, and it's soundtrack is also number one. TMNT will be lucky to see 150 million domestic, much less 200 million, which GOTG already has. The fact that GOTG is matching TMNT in the BO in it's now third week, is telling. Also, the drops are also considerable. GOTG had a 56 % drop, typical and good for a comic book movie. TMNT is looking at a 60+ percentage drop. That is not a good sign.

And also of note, the number one movie last year, I think was number one for only one week. Regardless, it still made over a billion dollars. It was this little movie called Frozen.
